The Aggies, who replaced Oklahoma as the top-ranked team in this week's United Press ratings, are picked to defeat Southern Methodist by at least two touchdowns. Oklahoma is an 18-point fav orite to make Missouri its 47th consecutive victim, and third ranked Auburn is the choice by eight points over Mississippi. All other members of the United Press top 10 are favored by at least one touchdown. Michigan State is a 14-point pick over No? Dame, Iowa is 7 over Minnesota, Ohio State is 7 over Purdue, Army is a prohibitive "out" choice over Utah, Navy is 6 over Duke, Michigan is 6 over Illinois, Oregon is 12 oxer Wash ington, and Tennessee is9! over Georgia Tech. Three games were rated as toss ups Nebraska at Iowa State, Villanova at Detroit and South Carolina at North Caro lina. It was Penn's sixth straight set l&ck this year and the first time in 54 years the Quakers had lost to Harvard. . Last Straw Under Sebo, Penn has won only -four of its last 33 games. And that loss to Harvard was the final straw, a source close to the Penn head office disclosed. . O Named head coach at Penn when George Munger resigned at the close of the 1953 season, Sebo completed, his first three year contract last year. He was then reappointed for another three years in the face of bitter opposition by the alumni. Bus Eaton Would Like Record Back Roseburg (IP) Bus Eaton, who lost his world's marathon bowling record this week, wants .it back. Tom Baird Jr., 35, Middle town, Ohio, went 286 straight games to pass Eaton's mark of 280 games set a couple of weeks ago. Eaton, who is working for the city street department here now, said he wanted to try again. "I know I can do better," he said. It took him 49 hours and 15 min utes to roll his 280 games. Washington State's Bob Newman holds a sub stantial lead in Pacific Coast Conference total offense, figures from the PCC commissioner's of fice showed today. Newamn has gained 1001 yards in his seven games to date, 89 from rushing and 912 from pass ing. He also has scored 11 touch downs. Second-ranked is Howard Willis of Idaho with 848 yards, including 331 rushing the largest such total ever amassed by a T-quarterback in the PCC. Jack Douglas of Stanford is third in total offense with 760 yards. Newman also holds the lead in passing with his 69 com pletions in 125 attempts for a 55.2 per cent completion mark. Stanford's Charles Shea has netted 564 ' yards rushing to maintain his lead over Oregon's Jim Shanley, who has 539, while Washington State end Don El lingsen is top pass receiver with 31 catches for 410 yards and two touchdowns. Shanley, Beamer Share Shanley and Oregon State's Nub Beamer share the scoring lead, each having seven touch downs for 42 points. Idaho's Ken Hall leads punt ing with a 48.2 yard average, Oregon State's Sterling Ham mack heads in punt returns with 233 yards, Washington's Jim Jones has 280 kickoff return yards for that lead and UCLA's Kirk Wilson has intercepted the most passes f our. Stanford has lengthened its margin as leader in total team offense. The Indians have gained a total of 2,468 yards and an average of 352.4 per game to 335 for second-place Oregon State. The Beavers are first in rush ing with 255.1 yards while Wash ington State is tops in passing with 176.9 yards. Oregon State also leads in defensive play, hav ing given up 257.7 total yards per game. UCLA leads in two depart ments punting and intercep tions. The Bruins averaged 40.7 yards on punts and have inter cepted 12 passes. Southern Cali fornia leads in punt returns with an average of 13.8 yards. Oregon is tops in kickoff returns with 26.6 yards. Eddie Erdelatz Coach of Week . Annapolis, Md. OF) He once said "you have to be a litte goofy to be a football coach." , He isn't goofy at all but rath er, as one writer once described him, "as knowing as a chief petty officer and as wise as an admiral." He isn't a braggart but was quick to say "we feel we are going to win every game we play." He's Eddie Erdelatz of Navy, the United Press Coach of the Week after his Navy team whip ped previously unbeaten Notre Dame, 20-6, Saturday and prov ed that sailors can travel via land and air, too. Best Starting Backfield ' Erdelatz has developed possi bly the best starting backfield in the nation. In fact, he was so satisfied during spring practice that he called a halt after 17 days three less than the NCAA limit. Don't get the idea that the 44-year-old Erdelatz is overcon fident. He just knows a good thing when he sees it. When Navy wins, he gives credit to "our great players." When the Middies lose, he says "it's all my fault." SATTERFIELD MEETS KING Oakland, Calif. (IP! Boasting personnel from all over the northwest, including several large universities and colleges in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, the Ramblers will ar rive on the SOC campus with an unblemished record for the current season." Known as "the goodwill ambassadors" of foot ball the Seattle club is in its 7th season as an independent team. -Don Sprinkle, head coach for the Ramblers, tutors as a hobby, and earns his paycheck as an assist ant sheriff in King county, Wash. Taking a well earned rest from practice sessions the SOC Red Raiders were given Monday and Tuesday to recuperate from last Saturday afternoon's hard fought free for all with the Eastern Oregon college Mounties, after which Southern Oregon became undisputed Oregon collegiate conference champions. Although the EOC club was able to hold the Red Raiders to a scoreless tie coach Al Akins said Tuesday that he was not dis satisfied with the teams effort. Akins said he believed the Red Raiders played a good hard ball game but were unable to gain a scoring opportunity because of ball control tactics of the EOC team. "Let them have their moral victory, we'll take the Oregon Collegiate conference champion ship," commented Akins. "Roadin" Ron Maurer, SOC's answer to Alan "the Horse" Ameche, received several bruised ribs in the Eastern Oregon tilt but is expected to be ready to meet the Ramblers Saturday. Saturday night's match will be the Red Raiders final home game. Ted Bates Gets Praise Corvallis (IP) Coach Tommy Prothro singled out tackle Ted Bates for a little praise Tuesday as the Oregon State Beavers prepared for Saturday's game against the University of Calif ornia Bears at Berkeley. "Ted played the best game against Washington State last Saturday that I have ever seen turned in by a college lineman," Prothro said. "Our line domin ated the game and Bates dom inated the line." Joey Giardello Defeats Greaves Denver (IP) Joey Giardello said today he did his best to make a fight of it in his simple unanimous victory over young Wilf Greaves in a 10-round mid dleweight bout at Denver Tues day night. He couldn't say the same for his 21-year-old Canadian oppon ent who fights out of Pittsburgh. "It takes two to make a fight you know," Giardello said when questioned about the booing that echoed through the Denver Coli seum. "I think I did my past." Now, Giardello wantsto meet one of the top middleweights Champion Carmen Basilio or Gene Fullmer, former champioq. Giardello is third-ranked con tender behind Sugar Ray Rob inson and Fullmer. - Prexy Optimistic About NW Loop Portland OP) Jim Fleishman, president of the Northwest league, said today he was opti mistic about the 1958 baseball season despite the fact that the Salem Senators released field and general manager Bill Bren ner because of financial prob lems. Fleishman said he expected all six teams to operate and that he also hoped for two more clubs to bring the league up to eight members. Bob Newman Total Offense New York (IP) Bob New man of Washington State reaped his reward today for his bril liant performance in last Satur day's 39-25 loss to Oregon State when he went into the lead in the major college individual total offense lead. Newman, who completed 17 of 25 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns, has amassed a total of 1,001 yards in seven games. That puts him 27 yards ahead of Utah State's Bob Win ters and 43 ahead of Colorado's Bob Stransky. Navy's Tom For- restal ranks fourth and Iowa State's Tom Nichols is fifth. Stransky has taken a solid hold on the rushing lead with 764 yards in seven games com pared to the second-place figure of 676 yardsby Jim Bakhtiar, Virginia's Persian prince. Ari zona State's Leon Burton is third and New Mexico's Don Perkins is .fourth. Baker Paces Passing Furman's Billy Baker is the current leader in passing but is likely to drop out of the No. 1 spot next Saturday because he does not play. Baker has com pleted 70 of 115 passes for 709 yards and ' five touchdowns. Huskies Prep Defenses Seattle, Wash. IP The Uni versity of Washington Huskies devoted two hours to heavy con tact work Tuesday to prepare a defense against Oregon's herald ed running attack, which the Huskies face Saturday at Port land. Coach Jim Owens named full back Jim Jones and guard Whit ey Core as co-captains for the game. They sparked the team against Oregon State as Wash ington scored its only victory of the season. HOCKEY By UNITED PRESS NATIONAL LEAGUE The New York Rangers, rap idly becoming the National Hockey league's "Cinderella" team, can oust the powerful Montreal Canadiens from first place tonight. The surprising Rangers, back ed up by rookie goalie Marcel Paille's brilliant netminding had to settle for a 1-1 tie Tuesday night with the Detroit Red Wings in the only NHL game. But the deadlock was good enough to put the Rangers into a first place tie with Montreal. The 10 Great Plains states have 37 per cent of the nation's land, 40 per cent of its cropland, pro duce 60 per cent of its wheat and 40 per cent of its cattle. Arizona State's average points per game is 35.5 and it has aver aged 433.7 yards gained per game. Mississippi, once famed as a passing team, has averaged 333.9 yards a game rushing this year. Bob Pettit Paces Hawks By UNITED PRESS Bob Pettit, the St. Louis Hawks.!. 6-foot, 9-inch sharpshoot er, is setting a whirlwind early pace in an effort to recapture the National basketball associa tion scoring championship he lost 'fo Philadelphia's Paul Ari zin last season. The ex-LSU star rang up 34 points in leading the Hawks to a 115-101 victory over the Syra cuse Nationals Tuesday night and now has tallied 165 points in six games for a 27.5 average Arizin won the scoring title last season with a 25.6 average, partly because Pettit was in jured in the closing weeks -of the campaign. Tied In First Tuesday night's victory squar ed the Hawk's record at 3-3 and sent them into - a first-place tie with idle Cincinnati in the cir cuit's Western Division. The champion Boston Celtics ran their unbeaten streak to six games in the opener of the doubleheader at St. Louis' Kiel Auditorium by whipping the De troit Pistons, 111-105.
