o o o o Defense Taken Ovef In Football New York W There's a new hero on tft college campus this year the once-anonymous de fensive star. He's the fellow the coaches say is winning the football games this year and now along comes the National Collegiate Athletic Bureau with a collection of sta tistics to prove the point. A a&rvey of 108 major col lege teams reveals that scoring, total yardage gained and num ber of passes attempted are all down. Yardage gained is down slight ly from last year but scoring is the lowest since 1943 and the average number of passes at tempted in each game is under 28 for only the third time in the last 20 years. The statistics also reveal that coaches have responded to the generally tighter defenses by resurrecting an offense weapon Medford JV Rolls Over GP JV, 27-7 Grants Pass Medford came back in the second quarter with 20 points to roll over the JV club from Grants Pass yesterday afternoon, 27 to 7. Vhen the teams went to the dressing rooms at the halftime counter, the Junior Cavemen were leading the Medford JVs, 7 to 6. Medford came back with two TDs in the third quarter and added one more in the fourth to post their 27 to 7 Oyictory. TDs f the Medford JV came on runs of 19 and 30 yards by Len Knight, a one yard run by Ken Durkee and a 55 yard gallop by Leonard Griggs. Con versions were accountedfor by QKnight and Durkee. Giardello, Greaves Meet In 10-Rounder Tonight For TV Bout in Denver Denver IIP) Bushy haired Joey Giardello, a boxing veter an from Philadelphia, is a 3-1 fa vorite to defeat Wilf Greaves, a youngster from Canada, in their scheduled 10-round middle weight bout tonight. Giardello, who admits he is fighting the age handicap at 27, hopes a victory over the 21-year-old Greaves will win him a shot at champion Carmen Basilio. Giardello is the third ranking contender. Greaves, meantime, could im prove his unrated position with an upset at Denver coliseum to night. He has a 14-6-2 record, and fights out of Pittsburgh un der the tutelage of boxing's only woman manager, Mrs. Jake Mintz. Thirty-two were kicked through games of Oct. 26 the halfway mark of the season indicating the year's total will top 60 for only the second time in 12 years. Here's what the breakdown showed in the various depart ments: Scoring: Teams are averaging 31.5 points a game compared with 33.3 points a game at same point of last season. The last time teams averaged fewer than 32 points over a full season was in 1943. Yardage gained: Teams aver aging 541.3 yards per game com pared to 558 per game last sea son. Passing: Teams have averaged 27.7 per game compared with 28.2 per game last year. Only other years in which average was below 28 were 1939 and 1955. Plays: Teams are getting off the same number of plays they're just not getting as far with them. Teams have averaged 93.2 running plays a game com pared to average of around 90 in past year. The Far West shows the great est scoring drop, from about 40 points a game last 'year to 28.3 this year ... the Big Ten, one of the lowest scoring sections with 31.2 last season, leads the nation with 36 this year. Mrs. Jan Burke of New York, owner of Dedicate, learned Monday night that Willie Har tack will be unable to ride her horse in the $75,000 added Tren ton Handicap at Garden State Park Saturday. Hartack, the nation's leading jockey the last two years is com mitted to ride Calumet Farm's A-Glitter in the Selima Stakes at Laurel this week end. Hedrick Eighth H GP Contest Hedrick Junior High school eighth graders have one more football game to play. They en tertain Grants Pass at 10 a.m. Saturday in a make up of a post poned contest. The Hornets of Hedrick won their battle with crosstown foe McLoughlin 14 to 12 last Satur day. Neither club was able to mount a sustained offensive and the touchdowns were scored on long runs by Mike McCullough for Hedrick and by Dan Coehill for McLaughlin. A pass, Dick Byrd to Norman Olson and a run y McCullough accounted for the Hornet's important extra points. Passes Stopped QTwo passes backfired in the final moments in the Bulldog ef fort to come from behind. Pat Williams deflected the passer's arm on one occasion and Ray Graves caught the ball in the air for Hedrick. A Hedrick fum ble gave McLaughlin the ball with 25 seconds to play but the Bulldog pass was intercepted by Paul Garren. Ron Gandee threw a key block which opened the way for one Hedrick TD. Paul Bauer played a good share- of the second half with a thumb injury and others turning in top games were Chuck Allen Mike Miller and Rennie Vowell. CARDS SIGN TAYLOR Chicago (W Jim Taylor, a 235-pound linebacker who played with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, has been signed by the Chicago Cardinals. Taylor, who played collegiate ball at Baylor, was cut loose when Buddy Par ker was named coach of the Steelers. His signing brings the Cards roster to 36, one over the limit. WSC Plans UCLA Clash Pullman, Wash. (IP) Coach Jim Sutherland planned a full scale practice for his Washing ton State Cougars today in preparation for Saturday's game with UCLA at Spokane. Sutherland, who let his team rest Monday, said he plans to stress defense against the Bruins single wing attack. Brenner to Gain TV Fight Soon New York (IP) Promoter Teddy Brenner has promised unbeaten Gene Ace Armstrong a TV fight with "some ranking middleweight contender" at St. Nicholas Arena, Dec. 9 or 16, because of Monday night's upset triumph over Randy Sandy. Armstrong, who stacks cases in an Elizabeth N. J. gin dis tillery, won a lopsided 10-round decision over Sandy of New York at St. Nick's Monday night for his 12th straight professional victory. It was Sandy's fourth straight defeat this year. He had been outpointed by Joey Giardello, Spider Webb and Franz Szuzina before the Armstrong catastro phe. He now has lost eight of 28 starts. Fullback John Horrillo suf fered a knee injury and is out "indefinitely," and halfback Earnel Durden is on the doubt ful list with a knee injury. Red Sox Appoint Thomas Manager Minneapolis (IP) The Boston Red Sox night appointed a 40 year baseball veteran to the post of Minneapolis Miller general manager. Appointment of Tommy Thomas, 58, was announced by Red Sox Farm Director John Murphy. Thomas is no stranger to the general manager ranks, having served as both field and general manager of the Baltimore Or ioles of the International League from 1939 to 1949. USC BACKS INJURED Los Angeles (IP) Guard Frank Fiorentino and star half back Rex Johnson both may not be able to play for Southern Cal. against Stanford Saturday. Norman Lewis revealed today he has been retained by the American Association's players to explore the possibility of forming a pen sion fund similar to the major league plan. Local Basketball Teams To Open Season Nor. 25 The Independent Basketball league is slated to open action about Nov. 25, according to offi cials on Tuesday morning. Six teams have been signed and a meeting is set on Wednes day, Nov. 6, at the YMCA for scheduling an election of new officials. Games will be played on Monday, Tuesday and Wed nesday evenings, officials said No site has been picked for the games, they said. League officials said they would like to have at least two more teams enter the league. Interested teams should contact officials at the Nov. 6 meeting, they said.
