ly gained and awe-inspiring
world power, but clearly in the
throes of a fresh internal strug
gle for supreme leadership.
Looking back over this event
ful 40 years, the regime can
boast of having taken Russia a
long way since a handful of old
Bolsheviks stormed the Czarist
Winter Palace on that gray fall
day in 1917.
The 40 years of Communist
rule have witnessed one of the
most spectacular drives in mod
ern history. They have seen
some world shaking events and
some of the most surprising
achievements some of them
launched on a sea of blood and
human agony.

Max Hawks and daughters, Pat
and Maxine Hawks and the hon
ored guest, Mrs. Clara Thurman.
Mr. and Mrs. Athel Dudley of
Shady Cove took a trip this past
week to Sutherlin, Ore., where

ley's niece and husband, Mr. and
Mrs. Walt Wardlow and also
saw their old .friends, Mr. and
Mrs. B. C. Watson of Seattle,
whom they had not seen for
some time. While there they also
visited the former principal of
the Shady Ccie school and his
wife, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mullen.
Mullen is principal of the school
in Sutherlin.
Blaine Williams of Shady
Cove underwent surgery last
week at Sacred Heart hospital in
Medford. He is convalescing at
the hospital.

Mrs. Edith Davis and Miss Lotus
O Eaton of Medford and Mrs. Has
kin's sister, Mrs. Bertha Schram,
of Pekin, 111., spent the weekend
as house guests of Mr. and Mrs.

that they were buying homes in

In Augusta, Ga., newspaper
said a house near Nixon's $75,
000 home in northwest Washing
ton was one of those on which
an option had been obtained.

lution Russia stands provocative
ly as challenger of the United
States, with the launching of
the first satellite into outer
space as the crowning result of
her efforts.
But she too has her problems.
They center around internal
rifts, cracks in the seams of the
expanded Soviet empire, the
challenge to her ideological lead
ership and the emergence of
"national Communism" among
her satellites.
In the distance looms the ris
ing star of Red China as a fu
ture challenge for Communist
leadership. Today, China is an
ally. Whether that will last
when China is no longer econo
mically dependent on Russia, no
one can say.
Russia's most recent gain has
been growing influence in the
Middle East, until only a short
time back an exclusive preserve
of the Western sphere of influ
ence. The past four decades have
also seen the destruction of Rus
sia's once powerful middle and
upper classes, the annihilation
of the opposition, the liquida
tion of the Kulaks and the col
lectivization of agriculture and
the emergence of a pight, all
powerful and a 1 1-controlling
"monolithic" party apparatus.

Red Chiefs Gather
To Mark Revolution
Berlin iW A large number
of Soviet Army officers have
rushed to East Germany to
counteract shock and dissatisfac
tion among 400,000 Red Army
soldiers over the ouster of
Georgi Zhukov, their hero, it
was reported Saturday.
The "Information Bureau
West," a private West Berlin in
telligence agency, said officers
as well as enlisted men in the
estimated 30 Soviet divisions in
East Germany were stunned by
the removal of Zhukov as de
fense minister.
The agency attributed its re
port to an interpreter who works
for the Soviet armed forces in
East Germany.
According to the bureau the
Red Army high command order
ed intensified political indoctrin
ation of the troops to combat
widespread disillusionment.
A "large number" of Army of
ficers who specialty is political
education were sent by the So
viet Defense ministry to open a
propaganda campaign, the bur
eau said.

Madison, Wis. IPi Mayor
Ivan Nestingen said Saturday
that a live guided missile nar
rowly missed plowing into an
east side residential area Friday.
Nestingen said that an Air
Force F102A jet which caught
fire at Truax Air Force base,
let the missile loose. It detonated
shortly after leaving the plane,
Nestingen said, and a city em
ployee found the warhead at
the nearby city airport.
The Air Force neither con
firmed or denied the report and
Nestingen sent a "strongly word
ed protest" to the Air Force.

and among them is the repair of
clothes. We're not concerned
with anything fancy. Just com
mon camp repairs.
To make a presentable patch
in jeans, turn them wrongside
out and cut the worn-out spot
into a neat square. Then cut a
patch from a worn-out pair of
jeans (you always save them
for patching newer ones) into a
square a half inch larger all
around. Then sew it on. Then
turn the jeans rightside out
again and the patch should blend
fairly neatly.
Before your sweater begins
to show worn spots in cuffs and
elbows, sew in leather reinforce
ments. If you first stitch around
the edges of the leather with an
unthreaded sewing machine
needle (if you have one), then
you can do the hand-sewing
quickly, using the ready-made
holes. Otherwise punch in some
small holes before sewing.
If the sweater starts to show
worn spots, get some matching
colored thread, turn the garment
wrong side out, and darn in fine
loose stitches (make sure the
stitches don't go through to the
right side).
If you've got a tear in your
clothes, mend them before wash
ing them. The washing action
tends to enlarge tears.
To darn socks at night, use a
lighted flashlight as a darning
egg.

wish to make a light out of your
flashlight, rasp the neck of the
lighted flashlight in the open
jaws of a pair of pliers. Firm
the pliers' legs with a rubber
band stretched from one to the
other and twisted around each.

If you want your buttons to
hold on forevermore, sew them
on with dental floss.
To avoid cutting the fabric
when removing buttons from a
garment, slip a comb between
the button and the fabric and
then cut the threads with a razor
blade.
To sharpen a dull pair of scis
sors, take a coarse sewing needle
in your left hand and with your
right try to cut the needle with
the scissors. Or cut through fine
sandpaper several times.
You'll find that if you run
your thread across a piece of
beeswax, it won't tend to make
all those pesky little knots. Wax
ing also prolongs the life of the
thread.
To double your sewing thread,
put a knot in the end of each
thread-end separately rather than
tie them together with one knot.

twisting and tangling.
To keep your pants cuffs from i

inside each one where it will
