Calif. 1? A psy chiatrist believes that relatives and friends who protect an alco holic from the consequences of his drinking are actually doing him more harm than good. Dr. Fredick Lemere, clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, express ed this belief in a talk before the North American Association of Alcoholism Programs. "The well-meaning efforts of friends or relatives to protect an alcoholic from the consequences of his drinking may actually be a disservice to the patient," Le mere said. May Postpone Treatment "Shielding the patient may only postpone treatment beyond the point at which it can do him any good." Based on his experience with more than 8,000 patients treat ed at the Shadel Hospital in Se attle, Lefere said few patients would have tried to quit drink ing "had not some sort of pres sure been put on them to give up the habit." . The most common sort of pres sure, he said, was a threatened loss of a job, threat of divorce or deteriorating health. Lemere said if an alcoholic re jects efforts to help him, he should not . be contacted again for at least six months. Should Have Assurance "Too frequent efforts to get an alcoholic to do something about his drinking are interpreted only as nagging and defeat their own purpose," he said. "He should be left with the assurance, however, that help will be forthcoming at any time should he request it." The attitude of the therapist or counselor must be a "gen uine one of friendly assistance," Lemere said. "Although one may legitimate ly and advantageously hate al coholism as a social evil, he must never consciously or unconsci ously, hate the alcoholic as a person if he is going to help him. "Unlimited patients and a high tolerance to frustration is re quired of anyone trying to help alcoholics." The word turnpike originated from the early American custom of blocking toll roads with pikes or poles. When the toll fee had been duly paid, the pikes or poles were lowered.
