Family Council Charlotte R. I'll never be as happy with another boy. Mrs. L. R. I think we made a mistake. Charlotte R I am 14 years old and I am miserably unhappy and it's all because of this propa ganda against steady dating that my parents read in the news papers and magazines. I'm not pretty and I'm not DODular. but one bov liked me In fact he loved me and I loved him. If I were 19 or 20, people would take it seriously when I say that. Now I just get laughed at. But I know that I was never so happy in my life as when I was with Frank. I hated to be away from him for a minute. I wanted him always by my side. If that's not love, I don't know what it is. Well, it was all broken up be cause my parents said it was not good to have a steady. Frank said he loved me so much, it was steady or nothing. I see him now going out with other girls and I could just die. I could never be as happy with another boy. We did nothing wrong. Why should it have to be this way? Mrs. L. R. My husband and I now are beginning to think we made a bad mistake in breaking up this friendship. Frank was a very nice boy avid Charlotte just seemed to flower out in the months she knew him. He took her to lovely places and she had so much fun. Now she is terri bly alone and seems to feel very left out of everything. The trouble is that all the other girls do have steady boy friends. We made up our minds not to be influenced by that, but you can't ignore it. If Charlotte were more the type that attracts lots of boys, it would be okay. But she isn't. We hate to see her so unhappy. She says she doesn't even want to go to school because she must see Frank with other girls. We did laugh at her at first, but now we see she is really suffering. I talked to Frank's mother about getting him to call Charlotte and take her out some time, but she says she can't do a thing with him. Once he makes up his mind about something he won't be changed. The Council: The L. R.'s only mistake was in taking a negative rather than a positive approach to this problem. "Do" is always a better word with teen-agers and everyone else than "don't." Instead of smashing this friend ship, they should have helped Charlotte to use it as a stepping- stone toward broadening her so cial relationships. Granted, this is a very diffi cult thing to do, but it can be done if the cooperation cf other parents is enlisted. The young sters will tend to pair off. but if they are guided into social activ ities that bring large groups of them together, there will be more room for flexibility and change. Parents should take the initia tive in arranging small parlies that include boys and girls not all of whom are invited as cou ples. They should encourage their teenagers to join clubs that throw them into contact with groups of boys and girls. It would be best to concentrate on the.-e things and try to slur the whole question of "steady dating." Unfortunately, poor Charlotte was heading for a broken heart in any case. It sounds as tnouh Frank was getting out of his depth in this friendship and welcomed an issue to break it up. The L.
