RMIBWaiP-T'iar.TirKI V bo Medical Doctor Demanding More Attention for 'Somatopsychics' By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York IP Swimming against the present-day scien tific current, a medical doctor demands more attention for the 'somatop sychic" and less for the "psychosomatr ic." In case you didn't figure it out instant ly "somatopsy- Deios Smith chic" is the in fluence of the body over the mind instead of the other way round, which is "psychosomatic." Dr. Robert Wartenberg, the dissenter against the growing and means to reach their goal popularity among medical doc tors of "psychosomatic medi cine," implied that nowadays many people are called hysterics who actually have a nervous disorder. Genuine hysterics always want something that is why they're hysterical, he said, and then he complimented American women on the grounds that there are few genuine hysterics among them. Women Sensible, Sound "American women are too sensible, too sound and too proud to resort to hysteric dramatics and antics to get from their hus bands what they need and want," he said. "They have at their disposal more refined ways Birth of the Bulldozer It has been told that the bull dozer was first heard of as a steam-powered contraption made for Paul Bunyan for spreading the molasses on his hot cakes. More conservative historians, say Hols Holbrook and Chuck Hoonan, like to play up Ed Stamm and other logging and machinery engineers as the crew that first rigged up the modern bulldozer and put it to work in the woods. Hoonan himself tells that in 1927 Edward P. Stamm, then a construction engineer for the forming Crown Zellerbach cor poration at Cathlamet, took a trip to machinery centers of the Midwest. While there, he saw a tractor with a makeshift pusher blade at its front. It was operat ing on a garbage dump or, as Chuck Hoonan, a college man, calls it. "a sanitary fill." Ed Stamm came home with his head full of fine ideas for a big and powerful rig with a really rugged blade for shoving blast rock before it. He went to work with the Hyster people at Portland. And the first big, beau tiful and true bulldozer of the woods came forth. There are yet old Douglas fir loggers who re fuse to give the bulldozer any name but "the Stamm blade." Christmas Card Now Ed Stamm has joined the ranks of the "retarred." as Dizzy Dean calls them. But he liked Retarred George L. Drake, who pioneered in tractor yarding for Simpson Logging company, and Retarred Roy Morse of Long Bell, will be on hand with bells on at the Pacific Logging Con gress in Seattle, Oct. 30 through Nov. 1. And he will be heard. The logging industry does not forget its pioneers. They also re member Ed Stamm as the en gineer who introduced small one-and-one-half yards, and smaller, power shovels into logging rail road construction, reducing costs in one astounding case, from $100,000 to S14.000 per mile. A more recent improvement fathered by Ed Stamm was log bundling. A Finnish forester visited Stamm and inspected Crown-Z timber lands and log ging operations. Upon his return home, the Fin nish woodsman mailed the Stamms a Christmas card made from a pen and ink etching from real life. The card depicted a scene at a pulp mill in Finland, and Ed noted that logs shown in the etching were bound in bundles by chains. This was an idea he'd been looking for. Subsequent ex periments at CZ camps developed log bundling techniques used to day, with steel bands instead of chains."" Forestry Leader Ed Stamm has been in the fore front of the tree farm program. During his service with Crown Zellerbach, thinning and snag falling became established prac tices. He was vitally interested in the establishment of the Keep Oregon Green and Keep Wash ington Green programs. Only last year, he stepped down as chairman of the Keep' Oregon Green association. Stamm was the first chairman of the Industrial Forestry asso ciation; he is a director of the American Forestry association; a past deputy chairman of the Forest Industries Council; a trustee of the Foundation for American Resource Management; a past board member of the Pacific Northwest Loggers asso ciation; a member of the Society of American Foresters 'and last and noblest a former presi dent of the Pacific Logging Congress. Frank Yashin, improper left turn, $5. The official organization of psychosomatic medicine has more than tripled its member ship in the last few years. How ever, Wartenberg did not pro pose establishing an American Academy of Somatopsychic Med icine. But he said "great med ical sins are committed by the designation, 'psychosomatic." In figuring out what causes odd symptoms in the nervous systems of patients, doctors make their "greatest mistakes by calling some psychogenic (orgin ating in the mind) that is actual ly organic," he said. A neur ologist, of San Francisco, he was lecturing non-specialized phys icans on the meanings of obscure neurological symptoms in the Technical Journal of the Amer ican Academy of General Prac tice. Merely because "something happens after emotion, is ac companied by emotion or in creased by emotion," no doctor should jump to the conclusion that this physical "something" is caused by emotion, he said. Not Dramatic Enough He cited a physical disorder, "torsion dystonia," and aid its first manifestations might be called hysteria if you were strongly psychosomatically minded. But these manifesta tions are not, "for the simple reason that they are not dra matic enough." The term, "hysteria," he said, is "over-used and misused with out rhyme or reason. Every striking emotion is often called hysteria" even when the emo tion is "completely normal." Genuine hysteria is " a social disease." "Nobody is hysteric between his four walls,"- he continued. "An hysteric wants something! He demonstrates his disease, he is interested in it, in order to get something out of it and to get it cheaply a hat, sympathy, recogition, escape from a disa greeable situation." Doctors can't be too careful in deciding what is hysteria. "A diagnosis of hysteria is not complete unless it includes the mechanism behind it, which means 'what does the patient want."
