Corvallis A healthy flow talk freely with their parents fr Ka a "crirm nrnhlpm " of talk with parents that allows children to discuss personal problems is one of the great reeds felt by young people to day, according to a study made by an Oregon State college staff member and reported in the Oc tober issue of the National Parent-Teacher magazine. "Breakdowns in communica tions bring barriers of silence" that result in children keeping problems to themselves. Dr. Marvin C. Dubbe of the English department, has found. In a survey made of 100 Ore gon State freshmen men and women, Dubbe found that 99 state's attempt to cut down the ; highway accident toll. The Governor wrote to Prot estant, Catholic and Jewish min isters throughout the state that "we are not bringing home to our people the significance to society and to the individual of the commandment 'thou shalt not kill'." He suggested that the state's ministers might develop some sermons on the highway toll theme. Joseph W. Burba, D.D.S. Lia i Split-Level House Declared Popular In America Today Demand for a family recrea tion room has made the split level house one of the most popu lar styles in America today. The Construction Research Bureau reports that a national poll of more than 300,000 families plan ning new homes shows the split level house as popular as the ranch style. "In many communities," the bureau says, "this compromise between the one-story and the two-story dwelling outsells all other houses, It is a house that can be built on less land than a rambling ranch house. It usual ly involves less stair climbing than a two-story. And builders contend that it virtually in cludes a 'free room' the recrea tion room. "A typical split-level plan has a recreation room or multi-purpose room behind the garage on the first level. With the bed rooms over this level, and the living-kitchen area at one side, the recreation room and garage are enclosed in the house with out requiring extra roofing or more foundation. "With the recreation room on ground level and not in a base ment, glamorous possibilities are offered. Sliding glass panels can open onto a garden patio. Large windows can flood the room with sunlight. A centrally located chimney may permit the inclu sion of an indoor barbecue fire place. The floor can be covered with colorful resilient tile, even though the concrete is in con tact with the ground. The popularity of the home recreation room has been vari ously attributed to television, home movies, hi-fi, traffic con gestion and the increasing need to prevent juvenile delinquency. Difficult Topics Most difficult topics to discuss with parents, the students said, were marriage, petting and sex. Topics that gave fewest young people trouble in "family talks" were jobs, car expenses and use, friends, 'and social behavior. Reasons for the breakdown in communication point up some of the inner conflicts felt by young people, Dubbe noted. Despite the fact that students indicated they considered the talks important and desirable, the big reasons cited by them for the lack of discussion were "self-reliance" and "no need." The students hesitated to talk because they felt they ought to be "old enough" to decide such things for themselves, Dubbe explain ed. Recognition on the part of parents that the "desire for in dependence" is coupled with the "need for help" is important in building good parent-child rela tionships, Dubbe believe. Par ents are expected to take the first step in bringing up prob lems facing their children, he writes, because parents are judged to be older and wiser. Conservatism of the parents that is, an old-fashioned at titude opposed to modern ideas and ways ranked high also and so did fear of scolding or fear of punishment. "No time" for talk was one of the most im portant sources of difficulty for the girls, especially in contacts with their fathers. Age difference was among the least important obstacles where the girls were concerned but it did carry some weight with the boys. Vocabulary, the study showed, is not a major stumb ling block. The young people believed they had the necessary words with which to express themselves. To prevent difficulties in parent-child communication, Dubbe suggests that parents begin early in the child's life to encourage discussions of problems. Make time for relationships to take root and grow, he says, and strive to understand the needs and problems of children, Above all, "listen to them," he em phasizes. 4 A real dessert touch for ginger bread mixes is the honey-cocoa-nut topping.
