October 27. 1957 GO G Torna Fired Suppressing early and late challenges by an outclassed but fired up California rival, Med ford high school football aggre gation spurned Eureka's Loggers 23 to 6 Friday night to chalk up its fourth triumph against two losses for the season and to continue domination over a long time non-league adversary. Football fortunes at the north California coastal school have been at a low ebb this fall. But the Loggers belied that matter of record Friday. The Black Tornado held the upperhand in the overall view. It jumped to an early 14 to 0 command and led in the statis tical recap. But the Medfordites had to clamp flown on a Eureka charge after the opening kick off. Then, after getting the two touchdown jump, the Tornado yielded a score to the Loggers and it wasn't until Medford's fourth TD of the game was on the board that the home club bers could begin to breathe easy. Even then the Eurekans fought back to pound at the Tor nado door. Twice in Firit Quarter The Black Tornado tabulated twice in the first quarter and was blanked in the second per iod when Eureka put over its lone touchdown for a 14 to 6 midway standing. Medford pad ded out its margin with TDs in the third and fourth stanza's and shook off big fourth quarter bids by the Loggers. John Jones cut seven yards for the first Medford touch down and Tony Brauner sneak ed the last short yard for the second. Gerry Lyons got to the end zone in the third quarter on a 13-yard scamper and Skip Bennett slipped seyen yards for the concluding Tornado six pointer. Mike Murray's kicks were all true on all four point-after-touchdown tries. A pass play, Mike Minor to Leroy McFarland, good for eight yards, was the Eureka scoring maneuver. Jerry Olson set tTp the touchdown push with a 43 yard punt runback to the Med ford 25 yard line. A Medford offside placed the ball on thel 20. Roger Rodoni dropped a pass which might Have tallied a TD but Allen Eubanks gained three, 12. and two yards to put the ball on the Tornado three. Ro doni was held for no gain. Kick'Blocked It appeared that the Medford defense would hold as Tom Mor ris, Tony Brauner and Mike Rus sell swarmed on Eubanks and dropped him back on the eight. But the next play, a fourth down pass, earned the goal. Morris blocked Olson's conversion kick. Medford drove 63 yards to the goal for a TD the second time it got a chance to move the ball. It took seven plays with Jones gaining 32 on a weak side romp and Larry Brown power ing for 11. On the scoring play Jones headed around right and cut sharply back. Two plays after the kick-off the Tornado picked up its next touchdowning opportunity. Min or, trying to skirt his .left flank on a keeper fumbled and Tom Hamlin pounced on the ball on the Eureka 16-yard line. Ron Reich on a reverse to the left side went slightly more than 15 yards to set up the sneak by Brauner. The Tornado started to move Back ridders Turn Eurekans 28 to 6 MEDFORDSTRIBUNE SIPOPMTrS i' the closing minutes of the first half, getting to the Eureka 35 with the help of a 12-yard jount by Jones and a 28-yard Brauner to Reich pass. Brauner lost 10 yards on another aerial try, however, and the half end ed at that point. Fumble Stops Drive Second half opened with Brown running back the Eureka kickoff 22 yards to the Medford 43. Reich made three yards on a reverse and Brown went nine to the Logger 45. Then Reich swept left end for 10 yards and swung right for eight more to the Eureka 27. Jones made 12 to the 15 but the ball squirted away and Hasz recovered for the Californians to stem the Torna do surge. Five plays for the visitors netted them 17 yards to their 32. Minor passed and the throw was taken on the 44 by Med ford's Jim Funston who barrel led 31 yards way back to the Eureka 13. On the next play Lyons went over right guard and boomed to the end zone. Medford got its fourth quar ter scoring opportunity when a Medford tackier and the ball popped into the grasp of Med ford's Jim Corum on the 18. From there Brown gained eight and three yards to the seven and Bennett took the ball over right tackle into the end zone. Two Eureka threats were beat en off by the Tornado in the final panel. First came when Dennis Burroughs punted to the Medford 30. Mike Russell at tempted to snatch the ball from under the noses of the Loggers Medford HS Runners Win Medford high won a cross country race Friday at Winston with a 22-point count to 25 by Grants Pass and 31 by Douglas in the three-way affair. Cliff Thompson of Douglas was first individual runner, cov ering the 1 miles in a fast 8:33. Medford's Mark Norton was second 70 yards behind Thomp son and about the same distance in front of Steve Anderson of Grants Pass. Roger Johnson of Medford beat out Walt Morrison of GP for fourth. Other Medford placings were Elwin Simmons sixth and Glenn Kaye 10th. Pleasantly Surprised Coach Vera Wolthoff of Tor nado runners said he was pleas antly surprised by the Medford victory, adding ' that the longer his charges run the better they do. By agreement before the start of the race, only the first four runners of each school to cross the -finish line counted in the scoring. Medford's Ray Smith was 11th. Grants Pass, Crater and Med ford are to have a meet here at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. but muffed and Gaylor Carter fell on the ball for Eureka on the 29. The Californians pushed to the 14 but were set back to the 19 when Frank Peterson dumped Don Wilson. Medford took over on downs on its 17. It was an on-again, off-again night for the Black Tornado who has turned in better performan ces this season. But they had more than enough sparkling ball to spoil the upset hopes of the visitors. Game records show a team effort on defense with Mor ris, Dick Corum, Jim Funston, Skip Bennett and Ron Reich pacing in the tackling depart ment. It was just about the same for the Loggers but with Mc Farland the big gun and Hasz, Rodoni, Carter and Jack Sel vage others in the thick of the action. Bob Gee of Medford suffered a turned ankle in the early mo ments and was held out the rest of the night. Morris was another casualty with a back bruise. The fracas marked the reappearance of halfback John Harvey whose grid aspirations twice this fall have been halted by a broken collarbone. Medford plays Ashland here next Friday night.
