At least two Beavers are out of the game with injuries, tackle George Enderle and full back Jim Stinette. In addition tailback Joe Francis has shoul der and back troubles and full back Nub Beamer has a hip injury. Both are expected to start, however. Oregon State has been work ing hard in practice this week and sideline observers believe the Beavers may have regain ed some of the fire and snap. Still Favorite Oregon State has won four and lost one and still is a favorite for the PCC title. Washington has .top running backs in Luther Carr and Jim my Jones and a fine T-forma- tion quarterback in Al Ferguson. The Huskies are due to find Japan Duo Golf Leaders Tokyo IP Torakichi Na kamura of Japan shot his second straight 68 to put Japan into the lead for both team and indivi dual honors today in the second round of the International Trophy and Canada Cup Golf championships. Nakamura and his partner, Koichi Ono, met head-and-head in today's second round with the first round leaders, Sam Snead and Jimmy Demaret of the United States. FOOTBALL BOOKS The history, the techniques, the personalities of football are recounted in books available at the Medford Public Library. These include "Winning Foot ball," by Bierman, Danzig's "History of American Football," "Football Techniques Illustrat ed," by James Moore, "This Was Football," by Heffelfinger, ' a "Saga of American Football," by Weyand, and "My Favorite Football Stories," by "Red" Grange. themselves one of these days. They were one of the teams picked as a title possibility at the start of the season. Oregon State was to leave for Seattle by plane this afternoon with no workout scheduled be fore the game. Toronto Man Expected In Cave Junction Cave Junction Lionel Si mard, of the engineering firm of Simard and Knight, Toronto, Canada, is expected in the Illin ois Valley late this week to su pervise further appraisal work on nickel explorations here. As the drilling and open pit exploration on Woodcock and Eight Dollar mountains near an end, a summary report is being prepared by Simard and his con sultant to determine from char acteristics of the ore which metalurgical rocess will be most economical. Alex Skrecky, in charge of local engineering work for Nickel Corporation of America, said that during the few days of dry weather work on Eight Dol lar mountain was resumed. Twelve open pits or trenches have been dug to date, and sam ples are still being taken from some of these. Gold Hill Scouts to Collect Old Bottles Gold Hill Scouts of the Gold Hill Explorer Post 43 will call on local residents Saturday, Oct. 26, beginning at 9 a.m. to col lect bottles. Announcement of the bottle drive was made by Willard Waterhouse, senior crew leader of the post. He said funds derived from the bottle dona tions will go into the Explorer fund for the activities of the post. Robert Schmidt is advisor of the post. Meetings of the group are held each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Scout hall on Fourth ave. Warren, Ohio, was the first city in the country to install Mazda tungsten lights on its streets in 1910. Bing Crosby, Bride Honeymooning at Palm Springs Home Palm Springs, Calif. (W The honeymoon of Bing Crosby and his 23-year-old bride at Crosby's $250,000 home near this desert spa will be a brief one. They both have to go back to work Monday. The 53-year-old crooner, who parlayed a crooning baritone and an easy manner into fame and fortune, was wed in Las Vegas, Nev., Thursday to brown-eyed actress Kathy Grant, a Texas born beauty one year younger than Crosby's oldest son. Brand New House Asked if she intended to work now, the actress said that that decision was up to her husband. Crosby smiled, and said that he wanted her to fulfill herself completely. Miss Grant had never seen the home she was to share with Crosby when she stepped off the plane at the local airport after a flight from Nevada. As she stood aside and waited as friends loudly greeted Crosby, a photographer yelled: "Would you move forward, Mrs. Cros by?" "Say that again," the petite actress smiled.' Surprised "Holly wood The couple's marriage came as a surprise to friends and rela tives, and it was a hurried de cision for themselves, too. "We started seeing each other again about 10 days ago," Crosby said. "I realized I wasn't happy away from her and she felt the same way. But it wasn't until Wednesday afternoon that I could sell her on the idea of getting married." "That's when I started mak ing arrangements. I didn't even have time to pick out a fancy wedding ring, so I got a plain gold one." The pretty brunette met Cros by in 1953 while working on "White Christmas." Concrete Poured on New Bridge Near Kerby Cave Junction Concrete was poured this week on half of the new Finch bridge on the county road leading to the West side area. The span, located near Kerby, will be completed and ready for use in about a month. It is being built from steel in the two aban doned bridges on the Redwoods highway, by the West Coast Steel company. Points which should be con sidered, McNeil said, include: Don McNeil, manager of the ; ing machines, food - warming Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, warned residents of Jackson county today about a small group of unscrupulous pro moters who attempt to reach gullible investors through inno cent - appearing business oppor tunity ads. The chamber manager empha sized that only a small propor tion of business opportunity ad vertising offered to newspapers is of a questionable nature, and the vigilance of classified adver tising departments further re duces the proportion of such ad vertisements that ever find their way into print. "These columns have become one of the most popular features of the modern newspaper," Mc Neil stated. 'Thousands of suc cessful business ventures have had their inceptions in a small classified business opportunity advertisement." Important Facts But the chamber executive stated that, in order to assure full satisfaction, prospective in vestors should be aware of cer tain important facts which will help them to guard against offers of dubious merit. "For example," he said, "the experience of Better Business Bureaus and Chambers of Com merce throughout the country in dicates that certain business op portunity offers involving the purchase by the investor of vend- Negligent Homicide Guilty Plea Filed John Day (IP) Jeffrey I. Stod dard, 16, of Bend pleaded guilty Thursday to a negligent homi cide charge in connection with a highway accident in which five persons died June 14. Grant County Circuit Judge E. H. Howell said he would delay sen tencing pending a report from the probation officer. The Bend youth had previous ly pleaded innocent but changed his plea to guilty in the Grant county court where the case was moved on a change of venue from Bend in Deschutes county. Killed in the highway crash near Bend were John E. Milson, 37; his wife, Christine, 29; their two children, Glenda Gail, 10, and Pamela June, 4; and Dearl L. Laxton, 20, brother of Mrs. Milson, all of Halsey. Pathfinders Club to Distribute Leaflets Members of the Seventh-day Adventist Pathfinder club will give residents a treat instead of a trick on Halloween, Oct. 31. Club members, dressed in uni form, will distribute leaflets en titled, "A Halloween Treat In stead of a Trick." The leaflet offers a Bible correspondence course and contains several ar ticles. The group will be supervised by Dr. Virgil Mohr. A meeting will be held at the Rogue River Academy cafeteria for the 50 members after distribution of the leaflets. Applications for Civil Services Job Available Applications for examinations for public health advisor and public health analyst are being accepted by the civil service commission. The jobs will be with .the Children's bureau of the department of health, educa tion and welfare and with the public health service. Aditional information may be obtained from C. W. The one-hour show will in clude the history of 50 years re search of cosmic rays. Actors, cartoon characters, an imation sequences, scientific film sequences and puppets are all used in the production.. Frank Capra is the producer-director of the film. Richard Carlson will play the "fiction writer" in the film and Dr. Frank Baxter will be "Dr. Research." Scientific material in the pro duction was prepared under the direction of the scientific advis ory board, which includes repre sentatives from all major fields of science. The film will be available to schools and other groups as a 16 mm color fea ture, and interested groups should contact the Pacific Tele phone and Telegraph business office on Bartlett st., according to Medford Manager Jack Crea-ger. DOYLE MARKS 88 Holyoke, Mass. (IP) John J. Doyle, a former player and man ager of the New York Giants, today celebrated his 88th birth day. Doyle spent 35 years as chief scout for the Chicago Cubs and still is serving as a scout in the New England area. 1. Is a "franchise" being offer ed? Does the advertising paint a glowing picture of rapid riches? 6. Is the investor urged in the advertisement and subsequent interviews to make a rapid de cision? Famous Brands 7. Does the advertisement men tion the names of certain famous brands of products? Prospective investors in busi ness propositions should be fully satisfied regarding the back ground, credit references and re liability of the persons with whom they are dealing.
