L. Conley on the dislike men have of seeing their wife in curl papers or with her face cov e r e d with grease. As the lady says, men don't mind see ing a pretty Dr Alvarex skin Or the end-result of well-arranged hair, but they hate to see the inter mediate processes. Many men are constantly smouldering with wrath because, when Ihey want to go to bed, they want their wife to quiet down too, but she insists on spending an hour ap plying to her face a series of creams, pastes, "skin tonics" and "wrinkle removers." By the time she gets to bed, the man, if still awake, is "fit to be tied." The writer of the article might have gone on to say that many a man who is a good judge of women and their affections and tempers is suspicious of a "pro fessional beauty." He would not care to be married to her. He would fear that she would spend too much time and thought on beautifying herself, and would love herself so much that she could not spare much love for him. This, of course, is not neces sarily true, put there is no doubt that many narcissistic women (overly concerned with their own beauty) are not capable of much affection. The man who knows a great deal about women often prefers the type of women who is beautiful, not because of Grecian features and a lovely skin, but because she has charm and enthusiasm, bright eyes, a great responsiveness to the moods of the persons about her, much good humor, and affection ate ways. As James Barrie once said, "Charm is a sort of bloom on a woman. If you have it you don't need to have enything else, and if you don't have it, it doesn't much matter what else you have." Beauty Not Enough Very interestingly, as Miss Conley says, the great Ovid, the Roman poet who loved women, warned girls that when it comes to holding a man, beauty is not enough. As he said, "Let your main care ... be to watch your character: the qualities of the soul add to the attraction of the face. Love based on character is durable; beauty will be devastat ed by age, and wrinkles will fur row a charming face. A time will come when it will vex -you to look at yourself in the mirror, and these regrets will give birth to new wrinkles. Virtue is suf ficient; it lasts a lifetime, how ever long, and kindles love as long as it lasts." An important point that Ovid made was that a wise woman doesn't go through her beauty routine before her husband if this annoys him. "Do not let your lover catch you with your boxes spread out on the table art beautifies the face only if it is invisible. These preparations will give you charm, but the demonstration is unpleasant. So many things shock us while they are being done, and please us when they are done." Ovid went on to tell how he once surprised a lady love of his with a wig on her head. This would have been bad enough but in her hurry to greet him she had gotten it on crooked. This upset him a great deal and turned him against her. Sought Court Order To show how disgusted some men can be with their wife's passion for applying cosmetics to their skin at night, in California recently a man tried to get a court order to keep his wife from greasing herself! The poor husband ought to have known that he hadn't any rights when it came to this. But, of course, looking awful in bed at night is only one of the offenses that gripe many a hus band and wear down his love for his wife. How he hates, also, to see his wife around the house in a dirty robe and with her hair in a mess. He may resent the fact that while she doesn't seem to care how awful she looks for him, she'll spend an hour or more getting "all dolled-up" for strangers. Yes; I know; I will now get a big pile of letters from angry women who will tell me that a man who sits around all day, unshaved and in woolen underwear, is nothing to make a wife feel loving. This is true, but we'll leave that for another column!
