Termite Problem In Oregon Lumber Discussed Widely . Salem The destruction of a carload of Oregon lumber this summer by the order of the Michigan director of agriculture was discussed at the annual meeting of the National Plant Board in St. Louis last week. The lumber was condemned be cause of the presence of the dampwood termite. Frank McKennon. chief of the state department of agriculture's plant industry division and a delegate to the conference, re ported a number of states were concerned about the presence of this pest in lumber shipped from the West Coast. McKennon continued. "This species of pest is not known to occur except on the Pacific coast and it appears rather im probable that it would become established in other states. Of ficials from states receiving lum ber feel they should not permit its introduction." Oregon's plant industry chief stressed that other delegates to the convention did not feel that destruction of dampwood termite infested lumber is necessary as the pest can be eliminated by fumigation, heat treatment or drying of the lumber. The board suggested that this should be done at point of origin to safeguard the uninfested states and to avoid irritating and expensive delays and treatment procedures at the point .of ar rival. As a result of the discussion, the National Plant Board is re questing each regional plant board to suggest policies or prin ciples to guide plant quarantine officials in the disposition of infected materials were methods other than destruction of the merchandist may be used. McKennon reports the state department of agriculture plans to meet with representatives of Oregon's lumber industry to dis cus a solution to the dampwood termite problem. ELK LOSES TO CAR Fremont. Neb. IP Ann Jel inek. 20, Wahoo, Neb., bagged an elk with her car on U.S. 77 south of here. Nebraska Game Commission director 'Mel Steen said it was highly unusual to find an elk in Nebraska. He also pointed out that elk are very sel dom killed on a highway, even in area3 where they are plentiful. Oregon Dairymen Schedule Meeting Corvallis Administration of Oregon's new brucellosis law. the milk audit law, and bulk handling of milk are scheduled for discussion at the Oregon Dairymen association's 64th an nual meeting, Dec. 2 to 4. at Klamath Falls, it was announced. The 1957 legislature centered administration of the brucellosis law entirely within the state de partment of agriculture. It was previously administered in the counties, it was explained. The milk-usage audit law, also enacted by the last legislature, requires Grade A milk proces sors open their books to audit for assurance that milk distribut ed at Grade A prices reflect Grade A payment to farmers. Such plants make lower pay ment to farmers for Grade A milk that goes into manufact ured products such as cottage cheese, butter, and ice cream. Milk-handling problems will be discussed by a panel of pro ducers, state inspectors, industry representatives, and Oregon State college staff members, re ports H. P. Ewalt, Oregon State college dairy specialist and as sociation secretary. Topics will include bulk handling of milk, pipeline milking, and keeping quality problems of milk han dled by milk methods. "This discussion followed a talk at the NAMO meeting by direc tor Hermon Miller of the poul try division of USDA, on the federal poultry inspection act passed by congress at this past session. Established varieties and new er apples that show promise are discussed in the bulletin by Quentin Zielinski, OSC horticul turist. Varieties are listed ac cording to time of ripening and in charts showing areas of Ore gon where they are best adapt ed. The 30-page, illustrated book let, "Apple Varieties for Ore gon," may be obtained free from county extension agents or the OSC bulletin clerk, Corvallis. Nearly 20 suggested varieties for home orchards, plus 10 va rieties of crab apples, are listed along with ripening dates. Rec ommended uses of home orchard varieties cooking, winter stor age, and eating fresh are also discussed. September Testing Has Few Reactors Brucellosis testing in Septem ber covered 18.226 cattle in 1.838 Oregon herds, according to the federal and state veterinar ins office at Salem. There were 111 reactors in 53 herds for a reactor percentage of six-tenths of one per cent. Jackson. Tillamook and Clat sop counties had the highest re actor percentage all over two per cent. However, according to Dr. A. G. Beagle, in charge of! federal participation here, most of the testing in these counties was confined to known infected herds. A reactor percentage of one tenth of one per cent was re corded for tuberculosis tests dur ing Steptember. Three reactors were found in 2,714 cattle tested.
