S. department of agricul ture report summarized by Ore gon State college extension mar keting specialists, shows people are eating better than formerly, but that diets can still be im proved. According to the report, cal cium and Vitamin C were most lacking in diets. Milk and dairy products, good sources of cal cium, are needed for sturdy bones and teeth. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, strawberries, canta loupe and certain other vege tables are rich in vitamin C. Big improvements have been made since the last large-scale diet survey was made in the 1930s, when about one in three diets was classed as poor. To day, only about one in ten house holds could be called poor by earlier standards, the specialist noted. Bread and flour enrichment programs, economic conditions, newer developments in food marketing and nutrition educa tion are credited with much of the improvement. One of the most appealing books yet produced about the activities is -Half the World's Children," by Spurgeon Milton Kenny. The author gives a warm ly human view of the United Na tions' Children's Fund's struggle to get its food and medical prob lems started among millions of village children of Asia, and re ports on its seven years of prog ress. The human factor, rather than the cold statistics, are stressed as the villagers tell their own stories: and the reader has a sense of actual participation, according to Librarian Miss Hel en Webster. Closely Related Not strictly concerning the United Nations but closely re lated in interest is another hu man chronicle, "Passport to Friendship," by William Peters. This is the story of the Exper iment in International Living, a 25-year-old American organiza tion founded in the belief that friendships between persons of different countries is an essen tial step toward world brother hood. By means of case histories it describes a large-scale program in which young people of many nationalities go to live with fam ilies in countries other than their own. Persons who are interested in such a program, or in study abroad, are also referred to UNESCO's publication "Study Abroad," now available at the library, Miss Webster said. One of the most readable and informative of the library's books on the United Nations is Clark Eichelberger's ''U.N.: The First 10 Years." which gives an appraisal of the successes and failures of the UN since its in ception. "Aims of the United Na tions" also outlines the princi ples upon which the world or ganization was founded and shows how these aims have been carried out. Reviews Work Still another book, "Work shops for the World," by Gra ham Bcckel. reviews the work of the 11 specialized agencies of the United Nations "In Hip Cause of Peace." by Trygve Lie, is an account of the first Secretary-General's seven vears with the UN. Other handbooks on the world organization include "The World's Good: Education for j World Mindedness." by Carleton Washburne. and "TheNature of' Conflicts," by UNESCO. For the texts of important agreements and declarations there is "United Nation's Agreements." edited by ' M. B.
