By EUCENE BURNS Ranger-Naturalist New Administration at MacLaren Puts Training in Departments By DICK HUMPHREY United Press Correspondent Salem !IP A new adminis trative organization of MacLar en school for boys at Woodburn was in effect today which ex pressed the philosophy of its new superintendent, Amos Reed. The tall, spare Reed who, at 41, has made a career of training and educating boys, has divided administration of the scnool into five departments to clarify the duties of the staff and improve training of the 337 students. A department of maintenance and operation under Business Manager Walter Hondrich will take care of all the school's fis cal and physical problems. Field Service Director Charles Clark will handle parole, foster care and camps. Adjustment Committee Set A new clinical department will combine medical-dental, psychi atric, guidance and religious care of the boys under Don Miller, former acting superintendent of the institution. Educational services which pro vide elementary, high school, vocatiational and sports train ing will continue under Princi pal Archie McCrae. Donald Barrett will run the department of home life which will deal with the problems of boys living in cottages and segre gation units and the general se curity of the school. Reed also has set up a new ad justment committee to immedi ately review the cases of all troublesome boys who have to be segregated. No 'Prison Wanted Reed said that previously too many staff members could throw a boy into segregation for a set number of days, a practice which he condemns. Coming to Oregon from the Illinois state training school, Reed is a staunch advocate of the training school approach to boys' problems. Howard Gault, Sheriff close to their ordinary commun ity life as possible and that dis cipline should be of the "family" type designed to develop a boy's own inner controls and social awareness. "You can't run a training school and a prison in the same institution," Reed believes. To this end, he would like to see the Oregon penal and juvenile codes changed to allow transfer of really tough boys to the new in termediate penal institution, now building near Salem. He bases this opinion on his experience as acting warden of the Illinois state reformatory, a position he held before his train ing school job. The emphasis in a training school program should not be on bigger segregation units and more concrete and steel, but on a good program and a good staff, he believes. Reed has no predetermined ideas on the length of time a boy should stay at the school ex cept that it should be a diag nostic decision on the boy's men tal, emotional and physical con dition. The new superintendent em phasizes that boys at MacLaren are still legally in the custody of the courts and, hence, of the com munity from which they came. He hopes for the cooperation of many community groups in re turning boys to their homes at the ideal time. Court Orders New Patent Suit Trial San Francisco (IP) The U.S. Court of Appeals Thursday or dered a new trial of a patent in fringement suit in which a Port land, Ore., judge reversed the decision of his jury. Federal Judge Gus J. Solomon declared that S2, 138,775 in dam ages which the jury awarded to Moist Cold Refrigeration Company, Inc., was made con trary to "the clear weight of the evidence." The refrigeration company claimed prior rights to a single cooling coil device for separate freezing and cooling chambers in refrigerators in its suit against Admiral Corporation and Amana Refrigeration, Inc. . The court of appeals ordered the lower court to retry the suit on grounds that evidence in the first trial was sufficient for the jury verdict to have been ac cepted by Judge Solomon. "I was standing by the shed one day admiring a beautifully spun spider's web," writes Mrs. Robert E. Girling of San Lean dro, Calif., in a letter I received recently which I'd like to share with you. She continued: "I mar veled at the intricate and uni form construction of it and won dered how such a creature could be such a unique architect. "I didn't see the spider about and decided to have a closer look at his home. I pressed my fingers on the center of the web to see if they would stick. Much to my surprise a big fellow with a triangular belly came running down from one corner to catch my hand and just as quickly he retreated to his hiding place. "There he sat motionless. I thought it would be fun to see what he would do, so Itossed a tiny twig into his web. I was re warded by seeing him re-appear and dashing down but he discov ered it was nothing to bother about and retreated once again. "I kicked over a board and found some earwigs and thought they should make a good meal for the spider. As I never be fore had observed what would aged to free himself. "The spider had no plans of defeat and tirelessly continued his efforts until the laws of na ture sided with the worm. He managed to free himself once more and slid off the web to the ground free once more to pursue less arduous activities." This ends Mrs. Girling's in teresting observation, and I'd like to add a few remarks from a letter by Johnny Kennedy, of San Lorenzo. This has to do with nature and the Bible. He says: Scientists used to think that birds such as eagles and vultures smelled their prey from on high. Now they know these birds see with telescopic eyes. The Bible says: From thence she seeketh her prey and her eyes behold afar off. Job 39:29. God Made Two Lights At one time man thought the moon was bigger than the sun and gave off light. The Bible tells us, Gen. 1:16, that God made two lights one to rule the day and a lesser one to rule the night. And, Job 25:5. Behold the moon it shineth not. At one time man thought the world was flat. The Bible says, Come in now for a peek at the '58 Chevrolet I occur I tossed the earwig onto I Isa. 40:21. It is He that sitteth the web. Like a streak of light ning, the spider pounced on his prey but not to eat him as I had supposed. Instead he held him fast with two legs and wound him up in a weblike thread spun on a bobbin. Then he left it there and ran back to his corner to wait again. I gave him several earwigs and bugs and each time he spun them up in a neat pack age and saved them for later. No Easy Job "Figuring spiders never had access to worms, I was curious to see how he would handle a wiggly creature such as this. Af ter some maneuvering I man aged to keep the worm on the web. ' The spider came to spin up his victim. This proved to be no easy job as the worm had no place for the spider to grasp. "Somehow though he managed to spin him up in a very untidy jacket but when he wpuld nearly finish the job the worm would wriggle out. "Then he would set about spinning him in again and again ! but each time the worm man- SOC Educator Speaks At Australia Meeting Ashland Dr. J. D.
