VA" Horrible Nightmares Several people have asked me, why do some persons, at night, keep having horrible nightmares in which they scream and keep their rel atives awake? Especially if the person has a violent tem per, and some epileptic rela tives, he should have an elec- A 1 1 9. Dr A.ivare7 iroenc e p n a i o gram made to see if by chance he has a latent epilepsy. Many persons with a so-called masked epilepsy, without fits, tell me that since childhood they have had bad nightmares and distress ing fears. As a man with fitless epilepsy recently told me, "Ever since I can remember, in my sleep I have seen flames spread ing toward me, and awful faces peering out at me." When I gave him one of the new drugs that are so helpful for epileptics, he reported that for the first time in his life he was sleeping restfully every night. Also, his temper was so much better that his sales had tripled. He no longer was argu ing angrily with his customers. I hope all my readers wil note that I am not saying that all peo ple who have nightmares and a violent temper have a tendency to epilepsy. That would be silly. All I am saying is that some per sons with horrible nightmares and a poor nervous ancestry ought to have their electroence phalogram made. This might lead to their getting rid of their nightmares. Union Adopts Automation Policy Portland (IP) A program looking to full use of labor-saving machinery with maximum protection for the welfare of the workers has been adopted here at a caucus of the International Longshoremen's and Warehouse men's Union. The unanimous action, taken by 114 delegates representing lo cals of the West Coast, Hawaii, Canada and Alaska, marks the first time the union has adopted an official position on mechan ization. Approved was a report of the Union's Coast Labor Relations Committee, which recognized that mechanical improvements are an increasing trend, here to stay, and welcomed the lessening of hard labor performed in the past. Among the protections sought the report emphasized the shorter work shift and no reduc tion in pay. The report embodied a port-by-port study of mechanization made on instructions of a pre vious caucus held in Sari Fran cisco last April. It is contemplat ed that informal discussions with employer groups will take place between now and next spring when another caucus will be held to determine wage, wel fare and other specific contract demands. j The present longshore agree ment expires next June 15. Mayo Foundation An Elderly Woman Who Thinks She Smells Bad Every so often I see an elderly woman, practically always sin gle, who tells me she is terribly unhappy because she smells bad. I ask her how she knows this, and she says that when she goes into a movie theater, a few peo ple get up and go out. I tell her that they do the same thing when I come in, but I assume that they have seen the show arid are ready to leave. Every person I ever saw who thought she smelled bad didn't have any odor that I or my nurses or assistants could detect. In all cases, I was almost certain that the peculiar odor was sensed only by the person herself, and that this was due either to some thing wrong in the smelling cen ter in the brain, or to a mild psy chosis. In those rare cases in which I could get hold of the patient's relatives, I learned that she had always been odd and ec centric. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer re quests for information or to at tempt to diagnose by mail.
