TOPS ON THE RECORD SHELVES: There are three big ones for this department, all good listening for the entire family. First let's spin "We've Got Letters," an RCA package featuring Perry Como singing some old favorites. Then follow with "A Salute to the Fabulous Dorseys," a pleasing Buddy Morrow etching on Mercury, and finally, "This Is Nat King Cole," Capitol's entry for top honors. MUSIC FOR FAMILY LISTENING: For an interesting program, start off with Capitol's "Fred Waring and the Pennsyl vanians in Hi-Fi" with some excellent singing by the choir and the great Waring band. Follow with "Other Voic es," the new Columbia LP featuring the fine piano playing of Erroll Garner; on this disk, he appears for the first time with a big band. Change the tempo now with RCA's "Piano Meringue" and "Cha-Cha-Cha" as performed by Johnny Con quet at the piano and his orchestra. For a bit of all band styles try "The Best of Big Name Bands" on Camden. "The Man I Love" is Peggy Lee at her best. Capitol has given Frank Sinatra the baton on this one, and the result is an excellent backing to a top vocal ef fort. Mom and Pop will really enjoy Al Goodman's version of Victor Herbert's operetta, "Sweethearts" on Camden. To make sure the kids get in their lick, spin "More Jerry Lewis" on Decca and "Golden Boy," Epic's best showcasing to date of Roy Hamilton's fine voice. TEENVTIME TUNES: When the jeaners get together, they might listen to "Think ing of You," Eddie Fisher's latest on RCA, which includes Eddie's top hits. On the same label is "Teen-Agers Dance," which gives instruction in the Hop-A-Do, the Tonky-Honk, and Rockabilly. Johnny Ma this, Columbia's bright new singing star, might well be the teen agers' discovery of the year. He's fea tured on "Wonderful, Wonderful, Won derful." And for music with a real beat, try "Phil Silvers and Singing Brass," with special numbers by Nelson Riddle and performed by real swinging cats. COVERING THE CLASSICS: Offen bach's opera, "La Perichole," which re ceived so much publicity when Cyril Ritchard staged it at the Metropolitan last season, is now available in an RCA album with Patrice Munsel, Theodore Uppman, Ritchard, and the rest of the New York cast. It's well worth the price. All hi-fi fans will want to hear "The Orchestra" featuring Leopold Stokowski on Capitol. This is one of the best dem onstrations of the functions of a sym phony ever recorded. JAZZOMANIA: Modernists will grab "Jazz Experiment," the Jazztone release starring Charlie Mingus and his crew. "After Glow" is another chapter in the Decca story on Carmen McRae. And for those with a Dixie bent, RCA has "Pete Kelly at Home," showcasing Jack Webb and Pete Kelly's Big 7. Bethlehem has come up with another winner in "Squeeze Me," which features the vocals of Sallie Blair, a really fine singer. Red Norvo fans won't want to miss "Music to Listen to Red Norvo By" on the Contemporary label. Finally, give a special spin to "This Is the Jazz Ac cordion," a Storyville LP with wonder ful jazz by Leon Sash and his quartet. SAMPLING THE SOUND TRACKS: For those who collect recordings of motion picture sound tracks, Decca offers "This Is Kim," from the picture, "Jeanne Eag els"; "Fire Down Below," the Rita Hay worth comeback film; "Folies Bergere," a French flicker; and a double-header on one LP, "Omar Khayyam" and "The Mountain." Capitol has "The James Dean Story," and RCA offers the Clark Gable starrer, "Band of Angels." 28 Family Weekly, October 13, J957
