Mayo Foundation Hypnotism Every so often there is a flare-up in interest in hypno tism, and one reads of opera tions perform ed during a hypnotic trance: also, of babies brought into the world while the mother was freed of pain. People are now writing Dr Alvarez to ask me if hypnotism will cure their nerv ousness or their tendency to al coholism, or if it will help them to lose 75 pounds of weight! I have been reading articles and looking through a few books on hypnotism, and the impres sion I get is that the procedure will give a woman a strong sug gestion that she should recover, but like all suggestions, its ef fects are likely to fade; hence I do not feel like having my patients treated with this meth od. I would suspect that there are grave defects in the technic because, although for a hundred years, again and again, men have become enthusiastic, and have used the method and pub licized it widely, it has never been much used by the rank and file of neurologists and psychiatrists. That it has dangers is shown by reports of persons who have remained nervously upset for some time after a short period of hypnosis. Before me is a let ter from the mother of a young woman who, 18 months ago went up on a stage to be hypno tized. The mother says that ever since, her daughter has been "completely haywire." She con siders herself in love with the man who hypnotized her, and is giving him all the money she can lay her hands on. She has left her lovely home and has de serted her husband and her two children. Naturally, the wom an's family are heart-broken over the affair. Without know ing all of the details, no one can say how much of this tragedy is due to the hypno tizing and how much to an ordinary "case" on an interest ing man, but certainly, getting hypnotized "for fun" did this woman no good. I think people would be wise to wait a while to see if the present flare-up of interest in hypnotism gets stronger, or if the fad fades out, as it has al ready faded out in the past. Isolation of the Virus of Mumps Important is the news that comes from Drs. J. P. Utz, H. G. Cramblet, C. F. Szwed, Mr. J. A. Jasel and Dr. R. H. Par rot, of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, The National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md., to the effect that the virus of mumps has now been isolated from pa tients with this disease. This now raises the hope that before long we can have a protective vaccine. Although mumps is common ly a mild disease, in some cases it is very dangerous to health. As most people know, it can attack, not only the salivary glands at the corner of the jaw, but it can seriously injure the testicles, the ovaries and the pancreas (the large digestive gland which lies behind the stomach). Worse yet, occasion ally it produces an encephalitis (brain fever) or a meningitis which can leave the person men- A LOT OF ENGINEERS Chicago iU Illinois Institute of Technology annually enrolls more students for engineering than any other university in the nation.
