52nd Year Medford United Pri Price 10 Cents Tribune Full Leased Wire United Press Full Leased Wire 2nd SECTION MEDFORD, OREGON, MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1957 Pages 1 to 6 FSood of Musicals Planned For Television This Season By WILLIAM EWALD United Press Slaff Correspond UP Staff Correspondent New York (IP) The TV machine is stuffed with musical shows this season 11 new ones and seven holdovers. One of the big puzzlers in the trade is how many will wind up victims of fallout. "A lot of them aren't going to make it," said Polly Bergen with melancholy detachment. "A lot of people are going to be off. Per sonally, I wasn't too sure my self whether I wanted to do this show. And I haven't decided yet whether I was right in doing a series." Miss Bergen, a 27-year-old ex port of Knoxville where she was issued as Nellie-Paulina Burgin is jockeying one of the new mu sical klatsches an every-other week Saturday night affair on NBC-TV. Busy At Home "I didn't know whether I wanted to work this hard and then there were all my family responsibilities," explained Miss Bergen as to her skittishness in taking on a show. "I have a 10-year-old daughter (her husband's by a previous marriage) and a husband to take care of and an 11-room apartment to run. "We do an awful lot of enter taining and in fact, when Dean Martin fell out as regular alter nate to my series, they offered me the full 26 weeks on NB and I turned it down. I didn't want to do it It was just too much." Miss Bergen, a fugitive from the movies and nightclubs, hit TV paydirt last season when she capered as Helen Morgan on a CBS-TV "Playhouse 90." "My biggest problem this year was deciding whether I should take on my own show this sea son or be a sought-after guest. One of the biggest problems in the business is getting guests for shows. Got The 'Berries' "But, well, I felt I had reached a point in my career where Xi I was to ever have a show, now was the time. After that Morgan thing, I felt I was at a climactic point in my career. We felt we had to cash in now." Her first show this fall was razzberried by some of the crit ics, but Miss Bergen shrugged it off. She also shrugged off two of the three writers she hired for that first show. "Believe me, when I say I didn't resent the reviews," said Miss Bergen. "On the day before the show everybody knew it was not falling together the way we had hoped it would. But it was the first show and nobody had the courage at the last moment to do anything about it. "The critics were right. But I also felt that first shows should Six Persons Die In Crash of Plane Uniontown, Pa.
