Then you're a perfect candidate for a skiing holiday. Call of the Snow Country by Jerry Klein Let it snow! Jack Frost needn't put a chill on your desire to "get away from it all." Wherever you live, you're not far from an area that offers holiday fun in the snow and sun. Maybe your idea of a Winter vacation is a quiet cabin in the woods with a sizzling fire and some books, to be tasted three times a day after meals, while the snow sifts silently down. If a bit more activity is what you crave, you can go sleigh riding, snowshoeing, dog sledding, or ice fishing. And if you're positively explosive with energy, there's ice boating, ice skating, bobsledding, tobog ganing, and skiing. Skiing, the ancient "sport of the Vikings," is the fastest-growing of all the snow-time sports. In fact, it bids to become to Winter what baseball is to Summer: clean, healthful relaxation and big business, already some $300 million a year. Even if you've never dreamed of sliding over the snow on a couple of slices of wood, you'll be tempted to try. Many resort areas offer learn-to-ski package tours, and equipment usually can be bought or rented right on the spot. Now, where to go? Reading from left to right on the map, there are scads of ski spots in California and the Pacific Northwest. Across the Canadian border, there's the Forbidden Plateau on Vancouver Island, Banff with its two-mile slope dipping 2,800 feet, the rolling hills around Prince Albert, and Snow Valley near Winnipeg. In Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains lies famous Sun Valley with its Dollar Mountain, which has been called the finest skiing instruction slope in the world. Here sun and snow form an exhilarating combination, and to relax tired muscles there's outdoor swimming in heated water. Neighboring Nevada has been identified with skiing since the early Western days when the legendary John (Snowshoe) Thompson first packed mail over the Sierras. There's Winter sport aplenty at Lake Tahoe, in Reno's Ski Bowl, and on Mount Charleston, 30 miles from year-round swimming at Las Vegas. Colorado has many excellent ski areas, as does New Mexico, particularly the 7,000-foot peaks around Santa Fe. The Mount Telemark Ski area named after the Norwegian province where modern skiing began is in Wisconsin, some parts of which have an annual 100-inch snowfall. Skiing starts around mid-December on Cabin Mountain and Weiss Knob in West Virginia. New York's Lake Placid area is world-famous not only for skiing, but for bobsledding as well. The Green Mountains of Vermont also are a favorite Winter holiday haunt. And New Hamp shire boasts areas such as Mount Washington which can be skied right up into June! Whether you go along to ski or just to sit and sun snow-time merrymaking can be loads of fun. Family Wrrkly, October , 1957
