VA" A Tremendous Operation For Cancer I recently read a fine article by Dr. Eugene M. Bricker, of St. Louis, Mo., on the so-called evisceration (removal of all in ternal organs) operation for large cancers of t h e womb or the rectum. Until a few years ago, if a woman 'came in with a can cer of the womb that Or A 1t7 r m-w had grown for- ward into her bladder and back ward into hpr rprtiim 'hor citna. tion was looked on as hopeless, iu no surgeon would operate. Of late, in these cases, sur geons have taken out the blad der, the womb and the rectum, and have transDlanterl the ureters the tubes carrying urine away from the kidneys into a sesment of small hnwel. This then drains into a rubber bag glued to the skin. The feces from the large bowel come out through a hole in the abdominal wall. Today, this operation can be performed in four hours, and the hospital mortality is not pro hibitive. About one in four of the persons seem to have been cured of their cancer, and are living several years after the operation. The question in the mind of many a physician has been, will thesfe women whose life has been saved be grateful will the add ed years that have been given them be worth living, or will the mutilation bring too much mental distress? Dr Bricker's imnression is that the added life is worth liv ing. He says that the women have gone back to their 'house work. In some cases there has been a rift between the woman and her husband because of her inability any longer to be a sexual partner. A similar operation is done on a few men in which a cancer has invaded both the bladder and the rectum. The Brain Can Funclion Well After Much Of It Is Injured When a bullet goes through a soldier's brain and he recovers, doctors often have occasion to marvel when thev cannot see that he is mentally handicapped in any way. a remantaDie case is that of a man who. manv vears ago in Massachusetts, was tamp ing gun-powder into a noie in some rock. The powder exploded and the crowbar he was using struck him around one corner of his jaw and went up through the top of his head. As I remember, he. walked to the hospital. He got well and today one can see the crowbar and his skull in the museum of the Harvard Medical School. About the only change noted in the man was that he was more profane after the acci dent than he had been before! Recently, Sidney Weinstein and Hans-Lukas Teuber. of New York City, gave 62 soldiers with an old bram wound the mental test which was given them when thev were inducted into the army, and found almost no sign of mental damage. And yet, a bullet that had gone through their skull had destroyed quite bit of brain tissue. Only those men who had sustained an injury to the left side of the skull showed a significant decrease in intelligence. Other studies recently report ed showed that a man can have a good-sized part of his brain re moved because of a tumor, and still be intelligent enough to pam his livinff in a nrofession. Evidently, most of the functions of the brain are not restricted to one place in the organ; when one part is injured, other parts can take over the wor. Lack of a Chemical Substance Mav Produce a Psychosis ReceVitly, Dr. D. W. Woolley, of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York City, and Dr. E. E. Shaw, report ed that when the body lacks a newly - discovered substance, called serotonin, the person suf fers psychotic - like reactions. Now, it is hoped that in some way the amount of serotonin in trip taodv can be increased. Per haps this would help some per sons with a psychosis. These patients sometimes look some what red-faced; they may have headaches: thev may tend to bleed occasionally, and they may have a tendency to astnma. io day, experts can usually treat the disease with considerable success.
