Seedling Shortage to Continue This Year Corvallis Shortage of tree seedlings for commercial plant ings continue this year with ra tioned supplies from the Ore gon forest nursery expected to fall short of demands for the fall planting season, a c c o rding to Charles Ross. Oregon State col lege farm forestry specialist. An inventory of about T-U mil lion conifer seedlings at the for est nursery is reported by the state forestry department. More than five million of these are Douglas fir seedlings earmarked i for state forest rehabilitation, i forestry department. Applications for order blanks can be made now with the state board of forestry, Salem. Douglas fir purchases are lim ited to 5 0,000 seedlings per order, and other species range from 1,000 to 5,000. Shipment of seedlings will begin in November. Attempts lo Boost Supplies Meanwhile, attempts to boost seedling supplies in the Pacific Northwest have resulted in an estima'ted 76 million seedlings this year in Oregon and Wash ington compared to only 20 mil lion last year, according to the Industrial Forestry association, Portland. Further expansion in Oregon is slated next year with the new Elkton planning to offer about Oregon state forest nursery ai 15 million seedlings next fall. Tree planting on marginal Oregon cropland under the soil bank program is expected to take a large chunk of the expanded seedling supply next year, Rob ert Madsen, soil bank forester, state forestry department, re ported. Con tracts are offered for 10 years when plantings are made for forestry purposes. Starting in 1958, the soil bank will offer five or 10-year con tracts, at the option of the pro ducer, for tree or shrub plantings for shelterbelts, wind-breaks, or wildlife habitats. The present 10 year contract requirement re mains in effect on tree plantings for forestry purposes. Suspect Released On Burglary Charge Portland (IP) A suspect with a bullet in his hip was cleared of an attempted bur lary charge Wednesday because the state was unable to. prove the bullet was of the same cali ber as that fired at a grocery store prowler last February. Municipal Judge J. J. Mur chison said the district attor ney's office was unable to pre sent sufficient evidence that would place John Wesley Brown, 27, at the burglary scene. The attempted burglary oc curred at a grocery store last February. Owner Wesley Powers told police he fired two shots from his .38 caliber revolver at the prowler. Brown later appear ed for treatment of a hip wound and then vanished. He was pick ed up against Sept. 17.
