New Microscope May Give Scientists View Of Inside of Cells San Francisco (IP Scientists may soon be peering into the inside of living cells, thanks to an X-ray miscroscope which can magnify an object j 10,000 times. This possibility was raised Wednesday by Dr. Albert V. Baez, of the University of Red lands, now a visiting professor at Stanford. He spoke to the California Division of the Amer ican Cancer Society. The new microscope lies be tween the best visible " light microscopes, which magnify up to 2,000 times, and electron microscopes, which can magnify 20,000 times. Mar Penelrat Hard Shells But neither visible light nor electron beams can penetrate hard shells and bony structures, r.or can they reveal the inner structure of metals. This is where the X-ray microscope may come in handy, Baez said. With a collaborating group of researchers in England, Stan ford scientists have X-rayed the innards of earthworms, fruit flies, aphids, grasshoppers, blood cells, frogs' kidneys, and plant leaves. Baez and his colleagues have perfected a method of hooking up a camera to the apparatus so that movement within a cell can be followed. The interest of the American Cancer Society stems from the fact that cancer is a wild and uncontrolled expansion of what were once normal cells. The X-ray microscope may someday let scientists see the actual means by which a normal cell becomes malignant. Can't Predict Discoveries "After less than 10 years of work we cannot yet predict the eventual discoveries which can be made with X-ray micro scopy," Baez said. "But the prospects are exciting." X-ray microscopy, he said began only about nine years ago, with the pioneering develop ments of Dr. Paul Kirpatrick and his associates at Stanford, and Drs. V. E. Cosslett and W. C. Nixon of the Cavendish Lab oratory at Cambridge University. . (International) Three of French Quintuplets Die; Two in Incubator l Thursday, October 3, 1957 Toulon, France (IPI Three of the Christophe quintuplets died Wednesday night and early today leaving only a tiny boy and girl struggling for life in incubators at the Foch hospital. Two doctors and several nurs es maintained a 24-hour vigil over the remaining two in hopes of preserving the fragile lives for their parents who had been childless for eight years. The hospital reported the mo ther, Mrs. Camille Christophe, 28, was doing fine. Mrs. Christophe gave birth to the quints three girls and two boys at St. Michael clinic on Wednesday. The babies, Weigh ing about two pounds each, were rushed to Foch hospital and placed in incubators. Mrs. Christophe, a small wom an who once was told she was sterile, had expected twins. The babies were three months pre mature. Doctors refused to predict the chances for survival of the re maining two babies. Mrs. Christophe and her hus band, Laurence, 33, had been childless for the eight years of their marriage.
