t Asian Flu Epidemic Arrives in New York, Health Official Says o Br -UNITED PRESS Outbreaks of Asian flu fever coincided with baseball fever in the World Series cities of New York and Milwaukee. Dr. Roscoe Kandle, acting New York health commissioner, announced late Wednesday that more than 10,000 persons had applied to hospitals for treat ment of respiratory ailments since last week end. The Health Department said a doctor or nurse will be stationed immediately in all public schools to treat children who are strick en in classrooms. Parochial schools also will be staffed. New York currently is host to AEC Said Not After Monopoly in High Energy Physics Idaho Falls, Idaho (IP) Com missioner Harold S. Vance of the Atomic Energy Commission has expressed concern over what he calls a widespread "miscon ception" that the AEC was head ing toward a monopoly in the field of high energy physics and the ultimate nationalization or socialization of industry. Vance addressed a dinner meeting Wednesday night of an industrial preview of the engi neering test reactor at the na tional reactor testing station here. Matter of Secrecy The AEC official said he felt part of the misunderstanding re sulted from "the matter of secre cy" which was necessary to safe guard American security in nu clear weapons development. At the same time Vance said the AEC wants to promote de velopment of peace-time atomic power without infringing on the private enterprise system. He said, "The philosophy of the commission is quite simple. It is that we should move for ward with all the vigor at our command in promoting peaceful use of atomic energy, that we a hould do so in a manner which does no violence to our normal way of doing business in Ameri ca . . ." Details Explained Details of the $17 million en gineering test reactor were ex plained to 250 officials attending the preview. ,Louis H. Roddis Jr., deputy di rector of reactor development for the AEC, also told the group the U.S. will become the first nation to fuel a large nuclear re actor with plutonium. Sen. Henry Jackson (D-Wash.) who as chairman of the Military Applications Subcommittee of the joint Committee on Atomic Energy, also participated in the preview. Jackson said it would be "catastrophic" for America to doubt that the Soviet Union had successfully fired at least an ex perimental long range missile. Fever Lasts 48 Hours Kandle said the "long await ed epidemic of Asian flu has arrived" in New York and "large numbers of people are now being attacked by the Asian flu. "The disease is behaving as was anticipated. It is mild, the fever lasting about 48 hours. Many who have been stricken have already recovered." In Milwaukee, where the series moves after today's game in Yankee Stadium, Health Com missioner E. R. Krumbiegel said the baseball happy city is in the "throes of an Asian flu epi demic." Krumbiegel said school ab senteeism ranged from 60 to 157 per cent above normal be cause of the flu. He said the in cidence of the disease among the adult population was more difficult to ascertain. The health official estimated that about 20 per cent of Mil waukee's more than 600,000 population will contract the dis ease. Cautions Against Alarm The flu also made inroads in Chicago where more than 51,000 pupils were reported absent from schools Wednesday and 348 teachers were ill. The outbreak began in subur ban Oak Park, hitting more than 7,000 persons. Absenteeism also was high in several other sub urbs, largely as a result of the flu. However, one school principal added: "Don't forget World Series absenteeism!" Chicago Board of Health Pres ident Herman Bundesen caution ed residents against becoming alarmed by the flu outbreak in the city since respiratory ail ments normally are common at thin time of year. "Now it scares people because there's a new name Asian flu," Bundesen said. Cab Driver Convicted In Call Girl Racket Portland (IP) Lawrence Leo, 34, a cab driver, Wednes day was convicted of receiving the earnings of a prostitute by a jury which deliberated four hours after a trial which opened Monday. Eight persons were indicted in connection with an alleged call girl ring and the two who pre ceded Leo to trial were ac quitted. Five others still face trial. Chief state witness was Stella Green, an admitted ex-prostitute who refused to testify at the first two trials, resulting in two jail terms totaling eight months for contempt of court. Doctors say he can now see out of both eyes, but that he may have to undergo plastic surgery on his face later on. Ozersky was the victim of an alleged revenge attack by Maurice Kess ler, 17, Sept 19. Frightened Villagers See Volcanic Island Being Born Angra Do Heroismo, Azores (IP! A volcanic island was being born in the sea near here today to the accompaniment of violent explosions and the prayers of frightened people. The island, shrouted in whit ish yellow volcanic ash and sul phurous fumes, has risen about 120 feet above the sea and is nearly 1,000 feet in diameter. Each hour its size increases. The sea there is 40 fathoms deep. Near Faial Island The island is 70 miles west of Angra Do Heroismo and only a few hundred yards from Fial Is land, whose 25,000 residents fear they will suffer the fate that be fell Pompeii. The birthpangs of the island started on Sept. 25 when severe earthshocks were registered near Faial. Two days later huge underwater explosions tore the surface of the sea, and some rocks and sand shot into the air. Sgt. John Bradley, manager of the U. S. Air Force television and radio station at Lajes Air Base on Tereira Island, flew over the volcano and reported a tow ering pillar of white smoke jut ting up to 1,700 feet from a black crater. "As we got closer the air be came saturated with the smell of hot sulphur," Bradley reported. "The water was very discolored and of a yellowish hue for two or three miles surrounding the phenomenon." Sufficient Quantity Of Ore Found in IV Cave Junction A body of nickel ore in sufficient quantity and quality for mining on an ex tensive scale has been found in the Illinois valley, according to a ' report from Simard and Knight, engineering firm of Tor onto, Canada, in charge of nickel exploration here. A progress report furnished to stockholders of New Delhi, the parent company for Nickel Corporation of America, states that the ore body can be profit ably worked with present meth ods and costs. Trench work is not yet com pleted on Eight Dollar moun tain, and existing excavations will be deepened in further ex ploration.
