Movie Crowds Off; More Theaters Builf Chicago (IP) Movie attend ance dropped last year but more theaters were built. And theater owners looked forward to mak ing more money. These seeming paradoxes were reported by Encyclopaedia Bri tannica in its new year book. Average weekly attendance at movie theaters in the United States dropped from 45 million to 42 million in 1956. But theater owners anticipat ed better profits because of new relief from federal excise taxes. Last year the industry count ed a total of 19,200 movie the aters, and most of 1e new ones were drive-ins. The number of drive-ins has grown from 811 in 1948 to 4,587 in 1956. Air Borne Infection Spreads Ringworm Chicago The American Veterinary Medical Association believes possible air-borne in fection and vitamin A deficiency play an important role in the spread of ringworm in animals. Veterinary experiments with cattle herds one a control herd and one an experimental herd infected with ringworm dem onstrated numerous factors in the incidence of ringworm in animals, the association said. These factors included concen tration of animals in an unsani tary environment, natural heal ing processes, dietary inade quacies and resistance. Researchers said a higher in cidence of ringworm was noted in winter, due chiefly to the con centration of animals in an in fective environment. HP) Ed ucators here report excellent re sults with an experimental pro gram designed to aid children who are handicapped by inabil ity to learn reading, writing and spelling as quickly as other sub jects. Robert J. Filbin, helping teach ing in the office of Superintend ent of Schools Lester B. Badger, said about 10 per cent of other wise normal school-age young sters suffer from what is termed a ."specific language disability." "Filbin said the disability in no way indicates an intelligence lack. But he said this type of child often is ambidextrous and sometimes stutters or has some other impediment, such as re versing words like "was" and "saw." Cautious Approach The technique used to teach these youngsters here was de veloped by Anna Gillingham of Bronxville, N. Y. Filbin said the system stresses an "alphabetic approach." "We begin by teaching the children a few letters compris ing one or two short vowel sounds and consonants that have only unequivocal sounds and forms which do not become an other letter if reversed (as b and d)," Filbin said. "When these letters are known by their names and sounds they can be made into words syn thetic phonics," he said. "Slowly new letters and letter combina tions are introduced and new words are added and finally used in sentences. "Thesr specific language disa bility children respond to this type of instruction readily and develop skill in reading, writing and spelling which they might not do if instructed otherwise," he added. & Usual Method For Most (Filbin stressed that only "ap proximately" 10 per cent of the Peterborough students are given the special instruction and that the rest receive the usual meth of of instruction used in most American schools. And if you're standing still you're losing losing ground. , . "So now Mr. Benny's com pany, J-M Productions, is pro ducing my show on NBC. He will do all the script editing himself. "Mr. Benny will be a guost star on the program a little later on in the season, too. His par ticipation has given me a lot of confidence in myself and the show." Benny has played a large role in Gisele's career. He spotted her first singing with Bob Crosby in a Las Vegas hotel. 'I'm thrilled, excited and scared about doing my own show," the dark-haired Gisele said. "The scripts call for me to sing, dance and take part in comedy routines. I'll play the violin and piano, too. "I hope we can work in an other violin duet with Mr. Ben ney," she concluded. "Our first one on his show three years ago is what launched the idea of my having a show of my own some day. C. Hanna, a vegetable crops specialist, is carrying on re search at the Mexican agricul tural field station near Vera Cruz on Mexico's Gulf coast, where growing conditions are ideal. Hanna and some Mexican co workers have planted several plots of different sweet potato varieties. With bees, long days, and the year-round blooming season, cross polination occurs naturally. The multitude of natural crosses produced has enabled Hanna to bring seeds from the best of these back to Davis. Eventually, the best varieties may be accepted for commer cial production.
