There the name of his beloved is inscribed on his chest in a setting of roses, doves, and lillies. Then he gets married to someone else. Back to the tattoo j artist. "For some reason," said George W. Krueger, a Seattle skin artist, "most young fellows have one girl's name tattooed on them, and then they marry a different girl." The return trip to the tattoo parlor is made to have the form er girl friend's name covered or changed. The wife usually comes along to make sure the old flame's name is completely blotted out. Preserving marital harmony has become the mainstay of Krueger's business because peo ple seem to prefer pictures on the wall to art on the arm. "The wandering, rugged fel low who works with his sleeves rolled up is disappearing," he explained. "They were the boys who were proud of skin art. And a good number of their girl friends, too." For nearly 50 j'ears Kruer has been putting on and taking off tattoos in Seattle. He's watch ed the demand for creative tat tooing fall off steadily. "The day of the full-rigged ship sailing through a storm tossed sea is gone," he said. "Ships I do now wouldn't amount to more than a little old tug boat back in the old days." The artist admits that if it weren't for the conversion and eraser jobs, he wouldn't be able to stay in business. "I've changed Larry to Harry, converted Jose phine to a screaming eagle, and Lucille to a square rigged ship," Krueger said. "A few days ago a real pretty girl came to my office. She lock ed the door, swore me to secrecy, and took off her blouse. There was a dainty butterfly with the name 'Frank' on it." She asked Kruger to change the butterfly and Frank to a birthmark.
