September 25, 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN New York IP They stood there, toe to toe, the one a sleek black panther and the other a whipcord little man made out of barbed wire, and they hammered each other with a mad abandon. It was the 11th round in the howling din of Yankee Stadium Monday night as Carmen Basilio stripped the middleweight crown from Ray Robinson's jet black locks, and it must go down in ring history as one of the great est rounds ever fought. You can talk about the night Luis Angel Firpo, the Wild Bull of the Pampas, knocked Jack Dempsey out of the ring. But I'll take that 11th round as Basilio opened with a left to the chin, followed it up with another and hurled Robinson against the ropes. Robinson Comes Back Talk if you will about that "long count" round when Gene Tunney got the "big 14" from the timekeeper and went on to take the heavyweight title from Dempsey at Philadelphia. But when Robinson, blood streaming from his nose, surged off" the ropes and buried a vicious right hand in Basilio's body, they were pounding out a saga of strength and courage which will live as long as men like this brutal sport. Give me a tale, if it's your desire, about how a bitter, venge ful Joe Louis sprang out of his corner and lowered the curtain of darkness on the Black Uhlan from Germany, the sorrowful figure which was Max Schmel ing. SP 3-1666 to the chin and then shifting to the body to double the hurting Carmen into a pitiful knot, this was leather mitten history in the making. Go on, hold out for the round in which the knotted fists of tough Rocky Marciano ended an era as they battered a gallant but aged Joe Louis into limbo on a night in Madison Square Gar den. But when Basilio came out of that pit of pain and lashed back with a savagery which sent Rob inson back on his heels, the crowd in Yankee Stadium rose en masse and howled its accolade of greatness. Goes On To Win You might think they had been greater rounds when this same Robinson, blood streaming down his face, launched a crazy last ditch attack which drew the cur tain of darkness over Randy Tur pin to win back this same cham pionship. Or even that thriller when - Marciano, trailing on points, fired a long shot punch from left field which toppled the heavyweight crown from the head of old Jersey Joe Walcott. But as Basilio reached out of nowhere, fighting on heart alone, to win that 11th round Monday nigh, this was oie of the tough est little fighting men you'll ever see. He was out on his feet but he marched up alongside such greats of gameness as Billy Pe trolle, Tony Canzoneri, Tony Zale and tough Robert Ville main, the Frenchman whose credo was "They shall not pass." For Carmen came back to win that round and eventually the fight. But that 11th round told the story, and it was as tough and thrilling and bitter a round as ever has been fought inside the squared circle. "We won it last .year," he grimaced," by half a game. We're better, I hope, but I don't think we've improved as much as some of the others. Three rookies seem likely to make the team and all of them might become overnight standouts tackle Earl Leggestt, who will play both offense and defense, and halfbacks Ronnie Knox and Willie Galimore. The Bears retain quarterback Ed Brown, who led the league in passing in 1956, and fullback Rick Casares, the league leading ball carrier. Then Zeke Brat kowsky, a rookie star in 1954, returned from military service. "We've got a one-two punch at quarterback," Driscoil said. "We will probably alternate them, but if one has a bad day, we've got the other ready to go. And don't overlook George Blanda.- He can keep us going too." (0) ti New York Group To Make Offers To Four Teams New York (IP) Mayor Rob ert Wagner's optimistic state ment that New York may acquire a major league team to replace the Giants and Dodgers was founded on the fact that a group of local businessmen is planning to make offers to four National league teams. These teams, the United Press learned, are the Cincinnati Red legs, Philadelphia Phillies, Pitts burgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs. The Redlegs already have turned down one offer from the group which, incidentally, includes a current stockholder In a Nation-1 al League club. This is what the group thinks of its chances of buying one of the four teams: Cincinnati The group is sure the Redlegs are for sale but that Powell Crosley does not want to sell it to someone who will take it from Cincinnati. Philadelphia The group has no idea whether Bob Carpenter will sell but will make him an offer. Pittsburgh One member of the group told the United Press, "If the Redlegs do not come to New York, I believe there is a very good chance it will be the Pirates." Chicago The same member told the U. P.: "Phil Wrigley is a very wealthy man but we be lieve he might be induced to sell the Cubs." . Ebbets Field Haunted House Brooklyn Iff) There's a. haunted house in this town today called Ebbets field. At 10:17 p.m. Tuesday night, the Dodgers finished what prob ably was the last baseball game they'll ever play in Brooklyn a 2-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates and turned the field over to the ghosts of games gone by. Only 6,702 diehard fans out of what once was baseball's most loyal and fanatic following were on hand for the "death" of the Dodgers. No Ceremonies Since the Dodgers have yet to admit officially that they're leaving, the occasion was not marked by any ceremonies. But the players, the fans, the park employees, the TV and radio broadcasters and the sports writers marked the passing of the Bums in their own way. The players held a beer-and- crab fingers "farewell party," courtesy of catcher Roy Camp anella. The writers and the broadcasters joined in. The park employees gathered in little groups under the stands for fare well toasts. Some of the fans were seen crying. Basilio Awaits Ray's Statement New York (IP) Sugar Ray Robinson was expected to make a statement about his future to day that would clarify the middleweight-welterweight picture. Carmen Basilio won the mid dleweight crown from 37-year-old Robinson Monday night, but he can form no plans until he learns whether Sugar Ray will try to recapture the title or hang up his gloves. Robinson's purse for Monday's fight was $483,666 without movie money. It was the richest of his career; but it will snrink mucn under the U. S. internal revenue bureau's anticipatory tax lien of $514,310 against it.
