SHADY COVE-TRAIL Woman Returns To England By EVALYN P. WATSON Shady Cove-Trail Mrs. Pau line Medina of Shady Cove re ceived a telegram the first part of the week stating that her mother, Mrs. Louisa Nelmes, had arrived safely at her home .in Coventry, England. Mrs. Nelmes made her first visit to the United States this summer and spent several months visiting alter nately at the homes of her daughter, Mrs. Medina, and her son in Mountain View, Calif. She said she enjoyed her trip and was much impressed with the friendliness of the American people, particularly the Oregon-ians. Mrs. Alberta Hughes, mother of Mrs. Walt Messecar of Trail, is back at her teaching job at Riddle, Ore. She has moved her big trailer house there. Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Taylor and son. Randy of Ontario, Calif., were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. U. R. Wagler of Big Butte creek. Trail. Mrs. Taylor is a niece of Mrs. Wagler's. Mrs. Montana Gilhousen of the Rogue River Lodge, Trail, is vacationing in Montana. She is visiting with her mother. Mrs. Edwin Strother of Shady Cove made a trip to Portland recently. Mr. and Mrs. Creighton Bax ter and children, Jeff and Bobby, of Livermore, Calif., have been recent house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Nevins of Shady Cove. Other guests have been Mr. and Mrs. Art Sabrero and children, Marcia and Sharon, of San Lor enzo, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Sa brera were godparents to the Kevin's newly-arrived baby boy, Dennis Crosby Nevins, who was baptized at Sacred Heart Parish in Medford. Phil Nevins is on a business trip to Livermore. The regular meeting of the Young Citizen's club was held Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Parish hall in Shady Cove. Speaker for the evening was Miss Noreen Kelly who gave a talk on law. Following this, members danced and listened to records, and re freshments were served. The next meeting will be held Thurs day, Sept. 26, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Parish all. All teen agers are invited to attend. Unit was held at the home of Mrs. Ronald AxtelJ with 20 mem bers present. Co-hostess was Mrs. Albert Esten. This was an organ ization meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Morgan of Trail spent a weekend visiting in Portland. A stork shower in honor of Mrs. Dewayne O'Brien was held on Sept. 19 at the home of Mrs. Tax Burnett in Shady Cove. Mrs. Dave Bergren as co-hostess. Games were played and refresh ments served. Guests present were Mesdames Shirley Winkle, David Holder, Bill Zimmerlee, Clifton Hutton and daughters and the Misses Joyce Conner and Gail Wunder-lich. Mr. and Mrs. James Nicholson of San Bernardino, Calif., are visiting with Mr. Nicholson's sis ter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Vanderlip, of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Ward of The Dalles, Ore., are house guests oi Mr. and Mrs. Walter Turner of Trail. The regular Volleyball prac tice for the adults and teenagers will start Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Shady Cove gym. Anyone interested is invited to particip ate. Sgt. and Mrs. Delbert Sagaser and family of Utica, Mich., stop ped off to see Sgt. Sagaser's sis ter and family, Mr. and Mrs Dave Bergren of Shady Cove on their way to Ft. Hanford. Other recent visitors of the Bergren's have been Mr. and Mrs. A. M Sagaser of Brookings, Ore., who spent the weekend with them. Mr. and Mrs. Erwin House and daughter of Shady Cove made a business trip to Klamath Falls. Mrs. M. Racanelli of Portland spent four days visiting with Mrs. George Pfeifer of Shady Cove. Mrs. Racanelli is a niece of George Pfeifer. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Edmister of Merced, Calif., are the parents of a baby girl born Sept. 9. The baby is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scottr Brill of Trail. Mrs. Brill left Sept. 10 to be with her daughter and family. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Axtell of Folding Hills ranch, Laurelhurst road. Trail, have returned from a trip to British Columbia, where they visited Butchard's Gardens, Victoria, B.C., and saw the Pacific International exposi tion at Vancouver, B.C. They also visited Axtell's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Axtell, in Boze man, Montana. Their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Nelson of Ashland stayed at their home during their absence. Mrs. Robert Darrohn of Big Butte creek, Trail, has just re turned from a 10-day visit with her sister, Mrs. M. Hillman, in Van Nuys Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Esten of Trail went on a camping trip into the Lava Bed country of northern California recently. The flower show which was planed by thne Shady Cove Gar den club has been postponed to a later date. uhe first meeting or the year for the Upper Rogue Extension Local Companies Buy BLM Timber Medford concerns have pur chased two tracts of timber in Jackson county at a sale at the Medford office of the bureau of land management. Olson-Ross Lumber company high bidder on an estimated 2,202,000 board feet of timber on Star Gulch in the upper Ap plegate area. The bid was $25.05 per thousand board feet or a total of $53,758.25. The timber was sold at an oral auction. Anthony Klimek bid $1,836.50 for a tract of salvage timber esti mated at 128.000 board feet near Hiatt lake. The bid of $23.75 per thousand board feet for Douglas fir, S29.25 for Ponderosa pine and $11 for white fir was the highest of two bids received. Two tracts of timber, which received no bids at previous sales, are still available, BLM officials said. One tract contains 45,000 board feet of salvage tim ber and the other contains an es timated 5,903,000 board rfeet. Both are in Jackson county. EWSMWB.- I Til m Rockets To Search From Ice-Breaker Boston (W The Navy ice breaker USS Glacier sails for the South Pole Monday, equipped with high-flying rockets which will search out scientific data 80 miles in space. The ship also will carry sup plies and manpower to American scientists now living on the ant arctic ice mass. Scientists aboard the 319-foot ship plan to conduct most of their experiments off the coast of Florida, in the Caribbean Sea and at pre-determined spots in the Pacific near Christmas Is land. Each of the five-foot rockets will be attached to a balloon cap able of reaching an 81,000-foot altitude in two hours. The rock ets will then be automatically fired and in 10 minutes will soar 80 miles into the stratosphere, before dropping into the ocean. GETS RED AID Tokyo (IP) Communist Chi na has granted 12 million dol lars to Ceylon to finance a five year rehabilitation of that na tion's rubber plantations, it was announced Saturday. The an nouncement was made in an of ficial communique broadcast by Peiping Radio following trade negotiations between the two Sunday, September 22, 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Soviet Ships Arrive, Syrians Set Curfew Nicosia, Cyprus HP Da mascus Radio announced an im mediate nighttime curfew on toe highways linking Syria's main cities Saturday njght. It coin cided with arrival of two Soviet warships on the Syrian coast. Regular programs were inter rupted for the military declara tion which said the 9 p.m.-5 a.m. ban on civilian traffic is "due to general movements and maneu vering to be carried out by the Syrian army." Syria ordered the curfew short ly after the Red Navy Cruiser Zhadnov and an escorting de stroyer arrived on a "courtesy" visit at Syria's main Mediter ranean port of Latakia. The order included Latakia as well as the capital, Damascus, among the cities affected. Riverhead, N.Y. (IP) Mrs. Willie Jean Irvin, 20, was not surprised when she received three tickets following her first attempt at driving a car. But she was ticketed after a 10-min-ute drive in which she negotiat ed a U-turn in a neighbor's newly-seeded lawn, jumped a curb and rolled along a fide walk until she cracked a con crete fence and ploughed into a two-story house, knocking it from its foundation. T City Police Ask Bids On Station Wagon Bids will be received until Sept. 30 on a station wagon for the Medford police department, city officials have announced. Bids were called recently on a 1957 model wim an eignt cyl inder motor and automatic trans mission. It will include regular patrol car equipment. Police said the station wagon will be on regular patrols. Sta tion wagons have been used in eastern cities for some time, but are relatively new in the north west.
