Chessman Has Sworn New York U" Convict- author Caryl Chessman, whose latest appeal to escape the gas chamber will be heard in Los Angeles next Monday, said to day that he has named to his at torney the person who commit ted the crimes he is charged with, but has sworn her to se crecy. In his third book, "The Face Of Justice," published by Prent ice-Hall today, Chessman said he has prepared a secret pack age containing a document that identifies the "two actual red light bandits," affidavits and photostats of police records, re ports and other material proving that "the wrong man occupies Freak Accident Kills K. F. Man Klamath Falls IP) Rob- ,ert Franklin Keaton, 36, Klam ath Falls, died enroute to a Klamath Falls hospital Thurs day night after a freak auto ac cident on Highway 66 two miles east of Beatty. Sate police said Keaton was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by Novatus Nell Kirby when the vehicle struck a deer on the pavement, spun around and turned over. Kirby was thrown clear but Keaton was pinned under the truck. Shortly after the accident, Ben F. Prior and Lou Zarosin ski, both of Klamath Falls, reached the scene in a radio equipped Weyerhaeuser Timber Company truck. They managed to extricate Keaton from the wreckage. Witnesses reported that while Prior radioed to Klamath Falls 'for an ambulance. Zarozinski at tempted to examine Keaton's wounds. He lighted a cigarette lighter in the darkness and in advertently ignited gasoline spilled in the crash. The flames spread to Keaton's clothing and to surrounding brush. After considerable diffi culty. Prior and Zarozinski man anged to drag Keaton clear of the flames and put out the fire in the brush by the time the ambulance arrived. Zarozinski was treated for minor burns. Klamath County District At torney Richard C. Beesley said he had requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death. His attorney, Rosalie Asher, said in Sacramento, Calif., that Chessman had given her the name of the man "who he claims is the red-light bandit." She said Chessman asked her "never to reveal it" and for that rea son she can do nothing with the information. Death Row's Oldest Chessman, 36, was convicted nine years ago on 17 counts of robbery, burglary, kidnaping and sex offenses, and has lived on death row longer than any other person in U.S. history. He left San Quentin Prison last Tuesday-in the custody of Cali fornia authorities to prepare his case for the Monday appeal hearing in Superior Court in Los Angeles In "The Face of Justice," the second book he has smuggled to his publishers from prison, Chessman repeatedly declares his innocence of his 1948 con viction under California's "Lit tle Lindberg Law." Chessman said he was pessi mistic about his chances of sur vival. He said he has an ulcer and fears for his sanity. He wrote his latest book in viola tion of the warden's orders, typ ing the first drafts on sheets of carbon paper which guards dis regarded. He said that he nearly went blind copying from the carbons onto manuscript paper Marked by Fingerpints Chessman signed each page and put his fingerprints on it with ink so that his agent could verify the authenticity of the manuscript. He said he found a "security hole" in San Quentin "big enough to drive a truck through" that enabled him to smuggle the manuscript out. He WARN OF REDS Kuala Lumpur, Malaya (IP) The Malayan government to day warned parents to be on guard against Communist at tempts to get jungle recruits from among students in urban schools. A government state ment said the Communist terror ists hiding in the jungles were finding it more and more dif ficult to get youths in rural areas to join them because those youths "know how tough life in the jungle can be." The state ment said the Reds obtained 211 recruits in Johore State during the past year. mm Heats like a Furnace without costly pipes or registers! Chessman has kept the case constantly before the courts by his own legal efforts and those of his attorneys. He is seeking a new trial on grounds that the stenographer at his Los Angeles trial died before his notes were transcribed, leaving some testi mony in doubt. But he has little hope. x "I . . . expect to be put to death in that lethal chamber soon barring a judicial miracle or an 'impossible' and unparal leled feat of black magic," he wrote. He noted in the book that he has seen one woman and 69 men go to the San Quentin gas chamber. Grace Expecting Baby in March Monte Carlo (IP) A palace press office spokesman said to night Prince Rainier and Prin cess Grace are expecting a baby next March. A communique said: "The palace of the Prince of Monaco announces that a happy event is expected by their most serene highnesses, the sovereign Prince and Princess Grace, for the month of next March." The announcement put an end to months of rumors that the former movie actress and her prince would have another child. Their first child, Princess Caroline Louise Marguerite, was born here last Jan. 23. Both the Prince and the prin cess have expressed hope that their next child would be a son. At present, Princess Carolina is listed as heiress-presumptive to the throne. But she would yield precedence if the next child is" a boy. Princess Grace is the former Grace Kelly of Philadelphia. Rainier is the scion of the centuries-old ruling house of Grim aldi. "And looking back through hundreds of shows, I can't come up with any formula for success. I can't even account for the fact that my show has stayed in TV's top 10 the past seven years when other shows folded." Interviewed in Pajamas The comedian, dressed in pa jamas, slippers and bathrobe, lolled on his bed. It was noon and he'd just completed a script conference. 'Maybe it's because my writers have stayed with me. Sam Per rin and George Balzer have been writing for me for 16 years. Hal Goldman and Al Gordon, the "new kids" have been at it for eight years. Fist Fight Erupts The battle for control explod ed into a melee of fistfighting in the town square between some 600 Communist support ers, brought in from the fields and factories, and anti-Commu nist: councillors. Thursday night, Communist officials moved into the 15th century government palace, bed and baggage. Outside the palace, party henchmen set up an all night guard, sitting on the cob bled pavement' nursing straw covered flasks of chianti wine and waving away all who came near. General Elections Secretary of State Domenico Moganti stuck his head out of a window Thursday night and announced the republic would hold general elections on Nov. 3. He indicated the Communists would not. leave the palace be fore then. The Communists, who have ruled this mountain-top enclave since World War II, Thursday dissolved the ruling Grand and General Council, which serves as parliament.
