ILLINOIS VALLEY AIan Injured in Accident By HELEN BOTTEL Cave Junction Paul Lewis of Kerby was hospitalized in Eu reka Tuesday after a woods acci dent near that coast city. According to reports, Lewis suffered a broken hip when a tree fell on him. He had been lumbering near Eureka for some three months. Mrs. Lewis left immediately for Eureka to be with er husband. Honored Queen Linda Deaton presided at the first fall meet ing of Jobs Daughters Bethel No. 36 Monday night at the Masonic hall in Kerby. A practice for grand inspec tion and initiation is set for Mon day afternoon, Sept. 16 at the hall. Members are asked to board the school bus to Kerby and transportation will be pro vided to their homes. Installation of several officers and members of the Guardian Council is also planned for grand ' inspection night, September 24. New members will be initiated during the evening. Mrs. Evelyn McGill, grand guardian, will be honored at a 6:30 potluck dinner . Tuesday, Sept. 24, before the inspection. Parents as well as Jobs Daugh ters and the Guardian Council are invited to attend the school of instruction at Medford, at 7:30 p.m. September 21. Al Boucher and Kenneth Ros enberg, smokejumpers at the Siskiyou Aerial Project, gave an interesting program on jumpers' work at the Illinois Valley Lions club meeting Tuesday night. Virginia Steimer was introduc ed as a new Den Mother at the Cub Scout committee meeting Wednesday night. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Millard were hosts to the adult leaders. Den Mothers this year are Mrs. Steimer, Mrs. Bill Box, Mrs. A. Y. Bailey, Mrs. Marg Paul, and Mrs. Melvin Starks. Also at the meeting were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Madden who will assist Mrs. Starks with her den. Madden may start a Webelos den later this year. Past presidents of the Grants Pass American Legion Auxiliary will conduct installation services for Auxiliary unit 70 in Cave Junction September 18 at 8 p.m. Refreshments are planned. Plans for a fall and winter season were made at the Home Extension Unit meeting held Tuesday at St. Matthias church. Marg Johnson, chairman, an nounced her standing commit tees. A preliminary meeting for the Dressmaker workshop is set for September 27 in Cave Junc tion. Training for the leaders will start in October and actual work will get under way this winter. A course in beginners' sewing was completed early this spring. Advanced textile painting was discussed and demonstrated at the Tuesday meeting, following a potluck luncheon. Each Republican Women's club member is asked to bring a young Republican (or Democrat) to the open discussion on State and county taxes, to be held at 2 p.m.,- Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Woodland Echoes motel club room. Mrs. Harry Smith is in charge of the program, has written Sig Unander, state treasurer, for in formation pertinent to taxes and the special session of the legisla ture. At a later date in the month, county and state legislators will be asked to speak at an evening meeting of the Republican Wom en's club. i Mr. and Mrs. Treve Allen and family were in Grants Pass Mon day for the funeral of Mrs. Al len's father, Mr. H. E. Brown. The Aliens, former residents of Rockydale road, are. now living at Willets. Illinois Valley volunteer work ers for the United Fund drive are asked to meet at the Masonic Temple at Kerby at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, to receive their kits and instructions on their duties. September IB, 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN Mr. and Mrs. Don Gibbs and children are home from a three week's vacation trip which took them to Lassen national park, San Diego, Calif., and Prescott, Ariz., Gibbs is president and manager of the Redwoods Tele phone company. Marine Pfc. James D. White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harland V. White of Cave Junction spent 22 days in August participating in "Operation Ironhorse," a desert combat exercise at the Marine Corps base, 29 Palms, Calif. Mrs. Robert Martin had a busy time last week. The family spent from - Friday until Tuesday at the State Fair where the Martin daughters and Linda Prather won honors in various contests. On Wednesday Mrs. Martin canned 91 Quarts of neaches. and Thursday saw her putting up box after box of corn for the freezer, before she, Mrs. Ed De Mersseman, and Norma and Ro berta Martin left again Friday for the fair. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Wilhelm and family spent last weekend at Chiloquin, Ore., their former home. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Boyd car ried no insurance on the big barn which burned recently on their property on Westside road. Esti mated loss on hay alone was nearly $2,000, they say. The barn was built in 1950. A picnic and afternoon outing was enjoyed by some 30 mem bers of the junior department of Immanuel Methodist church Sunday school Aug. 8 at Gray back park. In charge of arrangements were their two Sunday school teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Don De Haan,of Grants Pass, who come out each week to assist at the church. Other adults at the party were Mrs. Jim Allen and Rev. and Mrs. Robert Kingsbury Attending the Methodist district workshop on evangelism Monday at Roseburg were Mrs. George Trasher, Mrs. Ron Prath er, the Rev. Robert Kingsbury, Mr. and Mrs. Less. Archer and Mrs. John W. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Spitz and their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. James Spitz, Terry and Sharon, spent last week at the Spitz cabin on Klamath lake. They got one day's fishing at Lake 'o the Woods, and water skiied on Klamath lake for the remainder of the time. The James Spitz left for their home In Van Nuys early this week. Eight-year old Jane Messenger made her first solo airline trip last week. She arrived in Med ford Tuesday evening from Se attle, where she had spent the summer with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard T. Lewis Jane's mther, Mrs. Ralph Mes senger, met-her at the airport The Ralph Messenger family eamoed at Prairie creek, near the elk preserve on the Cali fornia coast last week end. OL' MISS BONES, HERSELF While performing in Mex ico City with the Athens Club synchronized swim ming team, Jo Ann Brobst, 20, of Piedmont, Calif, caught the eye of Mexican sculptor Jose Fernandez.
