WATSON Shady Cove-Trail One of the main events of the fall season in the Shady Cove area was the Garden Party and Fashion Tea Sept 7 at the home of Mr. and Mrs Ray Briggs of Shady Cove sponsored by Bethel 56, Interna tional Order of Jobs Daughters. Chairman and commentator for the show was Miss Suzi Chubb and musician was Queen Phyllis Briggs. Girls modeling; 1I members of the Bethel, were Marcia Ack- erman, Phyllis Briggs, Debbie Dunlap, Linda Eccleston, Pat Goode, Jackie Hume, Joey Hume, Frances Johnson, Eda Larson, Loretta Rone, Suzanne Rogers, Suzanne Schauble, Roma Shafer, Judy Taylor, Pam Van derlip and Judy Watts. Committees were programs nd favors, Loretta Rome, Suzi Chubb, and Phyllis Briggs; deco rations, Mrs. John Dunlap and daughter, Debbie, Judy Taylor; refreshments, Mrs. Jim Vander- lip and daughter, Pam, Mrs. Art Hume and daughters. Mr. and Mrs. W. Hammel of Reese creek. Shady Cove, were called to St. Louis, Mo., where they attended the funeral of Hammers brother, Fred Hammel. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Kelley of Shady Cove were guests at a dinner party Sept. 8 at the home cf Mrs. Kelley's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Jantzer, of Grants Pass. Other guests at the dinner were his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. nd Mrs. M. Madsen of Medford, and the Jantzer's sons and fam ilies. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Jant zer and children, Johnny, Glenn, JoAnne and Mark, of Mt. Shasta, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. Benney Jantzer and children, Elaine and Stephen, of Azalea. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bartuss cf Shady Cove, were guests at a dinner party on Sunday at the summer home of Comdr. and Mrs. Charles Goebel at Union Creek. Other guests were Comar. and Mrs. Will Roseman and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Mead both of Los Angeles and Mrs. Frank Sum mercamp of Washington, D.C. The first meeting of the year of the Shady Cove Home Exten sion unit will be held Tuesday afternoon starting at 1:30 p.m. t the home of Chairman Mis. Kenneth Paulson in Shady Covo. It will be an organization meet ing and all women in the area are invited. Officers this year are chairman, Mrs. Kenneth Paulson; vice chairman, Mrs. John Lowery; secretary, Mrs. Frank Linden, and treasurer, Mrs John Loper. Dr. and Mrs. Verne Wilson of Shady Cove entertained at their home last week with a dinner party. Guests were Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Lusby of Glendale. Calif., Dr. Ralph Lusby of San Fernando. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Conway, and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bartuss. and Mr: and Mrs. Ed Strother of Shady Cove, Ted Conway's sister and mother, Mrs. Lavina Caneday and Mrs. Carrie Zahn, of Los Angeles and Miss Margie Sandfort of Medford. Miss Ann Forbes of San Diego, Calif., is visiting her niece and husband, Dr. and Mrs. Verne Wilson, of Shady Cove. The Elk-Trail PTA is spon soring a school carnival Friday, Sept. 20, at the school gym. Newcomers to the Trail area are Mr. and Mrs. Gary Monical, who are renting the Clyde Staf ford house in .back of the post office. Monical is employed as a music teacher alternating be tween the Elk-Trail and Shady Cove schools. He is a graduate of Willamette university, Salem, and this is his first teaching assignment. Lee Shelton, son of Mrs. Peter Vachon, of Shady Cove, has mov ed to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Pfeifer and son. Bill, cf Shady Cove. Thieves Make Off With Almost Entire Sawmill Athens, Ala. (IPi Ener getic thieves made off with al most en entire sawmill near here. Sheriff Clyde Ennis said two men had stolen about 1,700 pounds of sawmill machienry from Sherman Marsh and had come back for a second load when Marsh spied them. 'Chain' Phone Calls Thwart Check Passers Springfield, Ohio (IF) A "chain" telephone-calling system is being used here to thwart bad check passers. Chamber of Commerce offic ials said merchants try to detain any person suspected of attempt ing to cash a phony check. But if the suspect leaves be fore police arrive, the merchant calls the chamber whose em ployees then contact 10 other local businessmen. Each is asked to call five oth er merchants who in turn tele phone five others and so on. The system is put into opera tion as soon as a fraudulent check is discovered, even though it may be several days later. 1 Friday, September 13, 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE NINE Youth Arrested for Smashing Car Windows Springfield, Mass. API, A 17-year-old local youth was ar rested for smashing all the win dows in an automobile with a tire iron. However, he was later re leased after telling detectives that it was his car and he was 'Teal mad" because it would not start. (IP) Co operation between business and education is being successfully achieved by the University of Notre Dame and a paint manu facturer. Called the Business Advisory Council plan, it allows business to aid education financially and receive some immediate bene fits in return. Started about eight months ago by Notre Dame and the O'Brien Corp., South Bend, Ind., the plan brings together profes sors and company officials to discuss fields in which the com pany has problems. O'Brien picks five professors from various fields and places them on an annual retainer. The fields the professors represent are chemistry, fine arts, market ing, finance and business administration. Mr. and Mrs. Leotis Love, for mer residents of Shady Cove, are now living in Klamath, Calif., where Love is employed, accord ing to word received here by friends. Ernie Miller of Shady Cove, who suffered a broken leg while working on a job at Myrtle Creek, is now back in Shady Cove. Mrs. Etta Mendenhall of San Diego has returned home after visiting her sister-in-law and Mrs. Millard Robertson, of Shady Cove. This was the first time they had seen each other in 44 years. While here the Rob ertsons and Mrs. Mendenhall made a trip to Bandon, where they spent a week visiting anoth er sister, Mrs. Mary Sell. Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Road ruck of Spokane, Wash., spent two days visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Sackett of Shady Cove. Mrs. Sackett is a niece of the Chuck Roadruck's and a granddaughter of Mrs. Ida Roadruck. The youngsters of the area have no doubt missed seeing "Smoky." the little black bear cub frolicking in his cage at the Rainbow motel. Smoky was pur chased by a man from Texas who was in this area looking for animals to buy for a train ing school. The man who bought him promised his former own ers the Jerry Smart's and son, Jimmy Welch, they would bring him back in a year. NOTED SOPRANO DIES New York OP Madame Mar garet Eichenwald, 94, a noted lyric-coloratura soprano in Mos cow before World War 1 and a singing teacher in New York for more than 25 years, died Wednesday.
