SP 2-6251 As AoWtM In 'The Post" for this city's street trees The volunteer group began last February when the city council restored to local resi dents the privilege of planting trees between property lines and the streets. For most homeowners, this means planting trees in "park ing strips" or parkways. Already Have Trees A good many parking strips already have trees, planted long ago. A number of these were the wrong type trees for their setting, and their roots have cracked sidewalks, branches interferred with power lines, and leaves clogged sewers and drainage systems. Some years ago the city de cided to solve tree problems by prohibiting tree planting alto gether between the lines of pri vate property and the city streets. This resulted in new subdiv isions laid out with bare, unin viting streets. The council last February at tacked the problem from a new angle. The object was to pro vide street attractiveness with out causing damage and inter ference with utilities and side walks. Tree Ordinance Under the street tree ordin ance adopted by the council, residents may plant their park ing strips only with trees pre scribed in a "master plan" to be drawn up by a committee. All committee members are volunteers and work without salary. They include Mrs. O. A. Eden, general chairman; Mrs. Fred Lorish, landscape archi tect and chairman of the land scape division; Claude Mcln- tyre; Mrs. Minnie G. Ball, rep resenting the Medford garden club;' Vernon Thorpe, public works director for the city; and Chester E. Corry, Ashland land scape architect. First step in drawing up a master plan is to inventory all trees now growing between property lines and city streets. Mrs. William Tucker is in size, condition, spacing, loca tion and types of trees. This job is almost completed. Landscape Committee Meanwhile the landscape com mittee, which has the aid of con sultant Clifford Cordy, county horticulture agent, has drawn up plans for several sections of the city. The time for planting is near Ideally, young trees should be put in the ground between the latter part of October and the first days of freezing tempera tures of winter. Paul Jorgenson, 324 Grove- land ave., was the first Med ford citizen to take action un der the new ordinance. He con tacted residents on his street last spring and arranged to or der trees for them. A few days later, Mrs. James Dunlevy, 408 Ardmore ave., did the same for residents of her street. A local nurseryman brought trees to the Jorgenson and Dunlevy homes, where the neighbors picked them up for planting. Other Streets This fall, other streets will be planted with trees in the same manner. Mrs. Roland Hub bard, East Fairview dr., has or ganized her neighbors in a pro ject for Fairview. Robert John son, 20 Hillcrest dr., has headed a tree planting project tor tnat street. Rogue Valley Land company, developers of the Country Club Manor subdivision, has agreed to plant trees for home owners in that area. Any Medford resident wish ing more information on the tree planting ordinance pertin ent to his own situation should contact the city manager. Though the committee plans trees for streets, residents are not required to plant. However, when they do plant any tree on their parking strip, it must be the one specified on the plans.
