BY MILTON RICHMAN United Press Sports Writer The St. Louis Cardinals Mag lie Has Starter Call New York IP) A 40-year-old "rookie" named Sal RIaglie gets the call tonight to give the New York Yankees' hard-pressed pitching staff a rest that Mana ger Casey Stengel says is "bad ly needed." "I don't know yet how much help Sal can give us," said Sten gel after announced that Maghe, purchased last Sunday from the Brooklyn Dodgers for $30,000 and two minor-league players, will be given his first chance as a Yankee starting pitcher to night against the Senators in Washington. "But I do know this this fel low knows how to pitch," Sten gel pointed out. "And my staff needs a little rest. Bob Turley has been pitchin' the best for me lately, and my relief man, Bob Grim, is great when he has a little rest once in a while. But even Grim needs some rest now." Brushing off Thursday night's 10-1 defeat at the hands of the still-hopeful Cardinals, the Bra ves preferred to dwell instead on the fact that Adcock and Logan will be available for duty during a comforting 12-game home stand which begins against the last place Cubs tonight. Adcock, the big first baseman who suffered a broken ankle on June 23, made his first appear ance for the Braves since then Thursday night as a pinch hitter and although he grounded out, he indicated to manager Fred Haney he is ready to play. Logan Plays Short Logan sidelined since Aug. 16th with a leg injury, filled in at shortstop in the late innings and also signified be can take his usual place in the regular lineup. Those two encouraging signs took a lot of the sting out of the four-hitter Sam (Toot hpick) Jones threw at the Braves Thurs day night. Hobie Landrith and Alvin Dark each drove in three runs for the Cards while Del Ennis clouted his 19th homer with one on. Lew Burdetts was the loser. Brooklyn defeated the Phil lies, 3-1, the. Pirates licked the Giants, 4-2, and Cincinnati beat the Cubs, 4-1. The Yankees increased their American League lead to 5V games with a 5-2 victory over the Red Sqx while the Senators shut out the Orioles, 3-0, in the only other game scheduled. Roberts Drops 19th . Rube Walker put the Dodgers ahead to stay with a two-run double in the second inning off Robin Roberts, who dropped his 19th game. Carl Erskin, the win ner, limited the Phils to one hit until the eighth when he tired and gave way to Ed Roebuck, who nailed down the victory. Rookie Whammy Douglas of the Pirates posted his third vic tory although Roy Face was summoned from the bullpen to register the final out. Al Worth ington started for the Giants, yielded Pittsburgh's first two runs and was charged with the loss. Grim Belts Homer Relief pitcher Bob Grim of the Yankees won his own game when he hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning off Willard Nixon of the Red Sox. It was the first hit of the season for Grim and the second homer of his big league career. Jackie Jensen gave Boston a 2-9 lead with a two-run homer off starter Bob Turley in the fourth and Nixon held that margin until the eighth when Gil McDougald tied the score with a bases-loaded single. The vic tory was Grim's 12th of the year. Southpaw Chuch Stobbs held Baltimore to three .hits and Roy Sievers blasted his 35th homer with one to pace Washington to victory. Rejects Mover Plea For Relief Portland (IP) Tommy Moyer, Portland promotor, told the Port land Boxing commission Thurs day night that he lost $8,000 on the recent outdoor fight be tween Pat McMurtry and Bobo Olson at Portland Meadows. But the commission rejected his request to authorize use of commission funds to pay referees and ringside physicians for an upcoming series of Tuesday night talent shows." Lost $12,000 Moyer made the request in an effort, he said, to get some financial relief. He told the com missioners that he had lost some $12,000 in his boxing promotions in Portland and added that he did not expect to make any money from the Tuesday night shows. He said he was promoting the weekly shows as a means of developing young boxers in the Portland area. The commission gave formal approval "to the weekly talent shows and also to the Eddie Machen-Eduardo Romero heavy weight fight slated for the Port land Civic Auditorium Sept. 18, under Moyer's promotion. SLIDING ACROSS THE PLATE to score, Philadelphia's Ashburn helped the Phillies rout the Dodgers, 10-4. Brook lyn's catcher, Roseboro, was a fraction of a second late in putting hia tag on the runner.
