OP) A Navy board of inquiry Thursday blamed a "faulty firing mechan ism" on a jet plane for sending a cannon shell ripping through a hangar at El Centro Navy aux iliary air station, resulting in the death of two enlisted men. . The accident occurred Wed nesday as the FJ3 Fury jet plane prepared to take off on a gun nery mission. The plane's 20 millimeter cannon without war ning discharged the shell. The shell hit one of the sail ors 50 feet from the plane, rip ped through the hangar wall and struck the second victim in the stomach. Pieces of the non-explosive type shell also nicked a third man. Names of the victims were withheld pending notification of next of kin. The Navy also with held the name, of the jet pilot. Navy officials said the pilot had been cleared of any blame in the mishap. They said an in vestigation revealed that a mech anical "error" caused the can non to fire as the plane started to taxi to the flight line. DOW TV SERVICE Expert Service All Make .
