Eases Curbs On Goods fo Polish Washington W The United States has made a new effort to shore up the shaky economy of Poland by easing curbs on export of civilian goods to the Communist nation. The decision Wednesday was in line with President Eisen hower's pledge last February to assist Poland or any other na tion which seeks "to assert its sovereignty against Russian domination." It followed' a recently con cluded agreement under which the U.S. will provide Poland with &5 million dollars worth of credits and farm surpluses. Like the new relaxation of ex port controls, the loan agree ment was designed to aid Po land steer a somewhat more in dependent course of Russia by bolstering its domestic economy. "The leading man they had for me was five inches shorter than I am." she said. "I don't mind playing comedy, but this was supposed to be a serious picture." Is That So? Jy IUGENE BURNS Rangar-Naruralist Difference in size between males and females of the same species of warm-blooded ani mals may be enormous when they become adults even though they may be the name size as litter mates. In the fur-bearing seal of Alaska, this differ-aue is per haps greatest: the bull may weigh upward of 600 pounds while his small mate seldom ex ceeds 90. And he, the lazy oaf, makes only a short migratory run from the Pribilof Islands to the Alaskan mainland, while she, the small female, swims 3,000 south to winter with her young. The Walrus cow, basking on the beautiful blue-whit Ice floe, weighs nearly a ton to her ponderous mate's 3,000 pounds. However, no hard and fast rule can be made with aquatic mam mals. With other species of seals, females may even out weigh males. But this must -be remembered: In water, weight becomes nonexistent, really. They float. Buoyancy Explains This buoyancy explains why some aquatic marnals can give birth to such huge offspring. All that the aquatic mother need is elasticity to accom modate the huge bulk of her un born pup which in the sperm whale may attain one-third the size of its mother and weigh up to 25,000 pounds. With the exception of the cot tontail ra'cait and jack rabbit (more accurately a hare), the earth-bound female who is larger than the mature male is exceedingly rare. Seldom does the female approach the male's size. With the coati mun di, weasel, mink, and fisher, the male may be almost twice the weight of the mature famale. However, there are two mam- mals, at least, that come to mind in which male and female Is al most, indistinguishable except to the expert In both size and appearance the nine-banded armadillo and beaver look alike. As for the latter it grows like a fish. It has the unique quali ty among mamals of never ceas ing to grow throughout Its life time.
