County School
Office Members'
Duties Described
The duties of offiers in the
county superintendent's office
, art set along established lines,
according to Alf B. Mekvold,
county school superintendent.
The Jackson county school
superintendent hears appeals
from parents, teachers, voters,
and school boards on all school
problems or associated matters.
He also acts as secretary to the
rural school boards, who dis
perse monies on an equalized
basis; to the non-high school
board which provides tution
and transportation for high
school students in a district that
has no high school; and to the
district board.
The district boundary board
considers changes in school
boundary lines, when petition
ed. The assistant superintendent,
Mrs. Una B. Inch, is administra
tive assistant to the superintend
ent. Specific duties assigned in
clude the educational testing
program in oounty schools, spec
ial education, and enforcement
of compulsory school attendance.
The testing program offers
advanced courses to students
who show special aptitudes in
various fields while the special
education program is devoted to
the proper orintation of prob
lem and mentally retarded chil
dren. County elementary supervisor
Bruce Hitt advises teachers,
with the school administrator,
on problems in elementary ed
ucation. The county supervisor
works with state and local of
ficials on standardization and
evaluation of prevailing cur
ricula, and submits progress re
ports to judge the efficiency of
present studies. -Hitt ..also car
ries on the duties of curriculum
coordinator.
The county schools office pro
vide numerous other services
to the schools and teachers of
Jackson county in the area of
audio-visual aids. The audio
visual aids department, includ
ing the school-owned educational
film library, valued at $15,000,
and the department of public in
formation and service is headed
by Jim McDonald.
In the face of an increasing
school population and a rapidly
expanding education program, a
close link between state and
local school districts must be
maintained. The county school
superintendent's office preserves
this link in its capacity as co
ordinator, consultant, and In
termediary between the districts.
It offers a wide range of services
of considerable interest to Jack
soft county residents and educa
tors and works with professional
and lay groups.
The county office posts notices
of proposed changes in school
boundary lines and notices of
the operating budgets of the
rural school board .and the non
high school board. A continuing
audit is made of all office ac
counting as well as the books
of the school district clerks.
Another function of the county
school office is to distribute
publications of the state depart
ment of education. These public
ations acquaint teachers-and the
public with new and improved
concepts in instruction and guid
ance . of students. These books
and booklets can be purchased
by interested persons either from
the state department of educa
tion or the county school sup
erintendent's office.
Other services of the county
school office are teacher place
ment, transportation systems,
textbook selection and cooper
ative purchasing.

Parents Should Note First Grade Rules
County school officials report
that parents who have children
entering the first grade should
take note that state law says a
child must be six years of age,
or have his birthday prior to
Nov. 15 to be eligible for ad
mission this school year.
The schools do not have to
admit students with birthdays
after that date. However, local
school board policy sometimes
permits entrance up to birth
dates of January 1, if the child
meets mental maturity require
ments. '
Permits for such mental ma
turity tests can be obtained from
the local school administration,
and the test is administered by
appointment . with the county
school superintend's office.
Most schools require a birth
certificate at the time of regis
tration. Physical and dental ex
aminations - are necessary and
may be obtained from the family
physician or the county medical
officer. The Golden Rod medical
report form, used for entering
first graders, may be obtained
from the county health department.
