HP" Fred Manery. 24, Phoenix, was jailed today for investigation on a number of charges, including drunk and reckless driving of an airplane, following a wild flight which ended when the "borrowed"' Pipen Cub crash landed on a busy highway. Manery, according to the sher iffs office, said he otook the plane from Paradise airport near here to go to Tucson to look for a job. He said he fig ured he would make an 'impres sion." that way. Frightened Residents Harried law officers learned the plane was taken after num erous calls from frightened Phoenix residents reporting a low-flying plane. Garrett Pow ers, a special deputy who oper ates Air Haven Airport, flew after Manery but ran short of gas. "I never saw such flying in my life," Powers said. "It was the damnedest show I ever saw." He said the plane flew little more than 10 feet above the ground, circling trees and skimming power lines. Manery, who said later he ran out of gas, crash landed on busy Highway 84, near Eloy, Ariz. It was dark and the plane had no lights, but only minor dam age resulted when the craft crashed after banging against a stop sign. Authorities here held Manery for investigation of grand theft. Pinal county deputies had three charges outstanding, one drunk and reckless driving. Manery also was wanted in the area where the crash landing oc curred for flying without a prose er license and for low flying. He told officers he did not see Mrs. Stearns because of heavy traffic. Moreno, 37, was picked up by police at his home because he had apparent ly taken umbrage among other things and was beating his wife. The other things, it appears, included some strong water and Moreno was thrown into a cell, from which he tried to escape by putting his head through the food-tray slot. Too large to come back out, firemen were summoned and freed Moreno's head after two hours work with hacksaws. Meany's Friends Convinced He'll Make Reds Squirm Washington IP) Friends of George Meany are convinced the AFL-CIO president is going to make the Russians squirm more than any American delegate to the United Nations has ever done. The blunt-spoken Meany will be a symbol of free trade union ists everywhere when he takes his seat at the new session of the U. N. General Assembly opening in New York Sept. 17. 'Honest Plumber' The Russians' usual epithets for U.S. spokesmen Wall Street lawyers and capitalistic war mongers can not be applied to the Bronx-born Meany, known in trade union circles as "the honest plumber.' Meany's life of labor leader ship and his word-battles with the national association of man ufacturers are unspoken answers to that kind of epithet. Yet Meany is confident U.S. workers will prosper most under the free enterprise system, and says so. Even more strongly, he believes good wages and work ing conditions here will be meaningless if the Soviet Union achieves world domination. . To Meany the Communists are "traitors to the workers" and Russian trade union officials are Soviet stooges. The 63-year-old, cigar-chewing chief of the AFL-CIO is so bitter ly anti-Communist that many American liberals and other la bor, leaders feel he's too rigid. But Meany sees no middle ground. And if you're not with him all the way on this subject, he's against you. but things are more subtle in Europe. "People who buy Confidential are emotionally sick. They like to read these horrible stories because it makes them feel bet ter about things they do them selves. They should see psychia trists." IIP) A judge has refused to let author convict Caryl Chessman confer with one of the two attorneys he fired earlier this month. Superior Judge Jordan L. Martinelli of Marin county de nied Chessman's petition which complained that attorney Rosa lie Asher was removed from the approved list of visitors to San Quentin prison. Chessman claimed that Miss Asher "still represents petition er on matters pertaining to pub lication of the book 'The Face of Justice.' " Chessman dismissed Miss Ash er and George T.
