American Scouts Head for Home Paris (IP) Nearly 1,500 American Boy Scouts checked out of Paris hotels today and caught boat trains to Le Havre to board the chartered liner Fairsea for New York. It was the end of a month long trip to Europe that began with the World Scouting Jam boree in Sutton Coldfield, Eng land, on Aug. 12 and ended with a two-week tour of the continent and a week end in Paris. Mamie Recuperating From Recent Surgery Washington W Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower is "coming along fine" in her recuperation from recent surgery but probably will remain in Walter Reed Army Hospital through this week, a White House spokesman said to day. Mrs. Eisenhower entered the hospital three weeks ago. On Aug. 6 she underwent an opera tion described unofficially as a hysterectomy. Press Secretary James C. (International Soundphoto) Breast Cancer Said More Prevalent in Childless Women Stanford, Calif. (IB Chilcf less women are more than twice as liable to have breast cancer as women who have had chil dren, an Ohio State University research study showed today. Dr. Madge T. Macklin, re search associate at the univer sity's College of Medicine, re ported on the study to the Amer ican Institute of Biological Sci ences. Dr. Macklin said that mor tality rates from breast cancer in the United States are more than 60 per cent higher among single than among married women. She said European research workers have also found the in cidence of breast cancer to be higher among childless women. Partial Protection Dr. Macklin found that child bearing acts as a partial protec tion against breast cancer. More over, she said the degree of pro tection increases as the family increases. "It is not' yet clear," she said, "whether it is the mere having of children which acts as a par tial protection ... or whether it is the amount of nursing that may accompany the child bear ing that is the important factor." But there is another side to the picture, she said. "Unfortunately, although the risk of developing breast cancer decreases with the increasing number of offspring, the risk of developing cervical cancer in creases." Dr. Macklin said a woman may inherit a tendency to de velop cancer of the breast. She said genetic factors "are at least as important as the environ mental perhaps more so," in breast cancer. Holfa Hasn't Changed Mind About Running Los Angeles (ff James R. Hoffa, midwest Teamster Union boss, said today he hasn't changed his mind about running for president of the powerful union at the national convention in Miami Beach, Fla., Sept. 30. Hoffa made the statement prior to attending the opening session of what could turn out to be a stormy executive board meeting. The teamster bosses, in cluding retiring President Dave Beck, huddled in the wake of threatened expulsion by the AFL-CIO on charges of corrup tion. 'I will be a candidate," Hoffa declared when asked by news men if he planned to withdraw in view of charges made against him at the Senate rackets hear ing. 'Members will make their own decision." ; Hoffa was criticized last week by Senate investigators on the vagueness of his answers about past associations with gangland figure Johnny Dio. "I answered the questions to the best of my ability," Hoffa said. "Do you remember what you did three years ago today?" City or Town i Monday, August 26. 1957 The Medical Roundup by PERSONS PRONE TO AUTO ACCIDENTS In a study by Tillmann and Hobbs, of Canada, 96 auto acci dent repeaters were 'compared with 100 accident-free drivers, and it was found that many of the repeaters were egocen tric and some what psycho pathic exhibi t i o nistic, re sentful of au thority, impul sive, and lack ing in social responsibility. Interestinelv. 66 per cent of them had been in juvenile or adult courts or had had trouble with their local Credit Bureau or had been inves tigated by social service people or public health clinics. Among the good drivers only 9 per cent had had any such contacts. Sex Criminals Dr. Bernard C. Glueck Jr., of the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, has just been studying a group of sex criminals at Sing Sing prison in New York. Instead of looking like tough fiends, he says many look effeminate. Forty per cent were unprepossessing, and 11 per cent were odd-looking or ugly. Many of them were all mixed-up in re gard to sex. None had a normal personality, and 70 per cent re acted like a schizophrenic. They were withdrawn, and not fond of contacts with the public. They uked to work alone. Few had any interest in intellectual mat ters. Seven per cent admitted they used drugs, but when they were drugged they had little in terest in women. Significantly, 50 per cent were either moderate or- severe drink ers, and a high percentage of the whole group committed their sex crimes while drinking. At these times what little con science they had was silenced by the alcohol. As many as 79 per cent of the men who picked lit tle boys as their victims were definitely psychotic.
