0 GOLD HILL Clubs Participate in Fair By MRS. CLYDE KELL Gold Hill Several young people from Gold Hill partici pated in the 4-H and FFA fair in Medford. Two girls from the Knittin' Kitten's club, under the leader ship of Mrs. Ed Knapp, received the grand champion honor for their exhibits. Patricia Knapp received grand champion for her knitted TV slippers and wash cloth. She Is In the beginners group of the club. These exhibits will go to the state fair. Receiving blue ribbons for first year knitting in this club were Lyndel Munday and Kar en Keys, nn their TV slippers nd wash cloth. Bonnie Knapp .received a red ribbon for her first year knitting entry. Intermediate winners second year in knitting were Judith Higgons who received grand champion honor for the fringed stole and pony tail hat that she entered. Carol Higgons, also a second year, mceived a red rib bon for her knitted turtle neck sweater. . Mrs. Ferd Jones reports that five of her 10 girls, who are in the first year Just So Girl's group of the Busy Bee 4-H Sew ing club under her leadership, entered exhibits in the fair. They were Patricia Knapp. Peg gy Dye, Sharon Wright, Carlot ta Davis and Linda Walker. Carolyn White and Marie Jones participated in the style fashion review Tuesday when they each modeled aprons and gathered skirts. They are taking third year 4-H sewing in the division group and are members of the Charmingly Yours club under the leadership of Mrs. Jerald Whaley and the assistant leader, Mrs. Sam Jones. Girls in the 4-H fourth year sewing group fromothe local Teenage Miss under the leader ship of Mrs. Al Beman also par ticipated in the style review. Receiving second prize for their dresses and blouses were Miss Vervia' Brown, Miss Bonnie Knapp, and Miss Judith Hig gons. Miss Judy Force and Miss Mary Beth Bailey received third prize on their dress and blouse exhibits. Miss Beman won grand cham pion in a teenage zipper instal lation contest. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Gray have had as house guests recently Mr. and Mrs. Victor Pickett and sen, Bobbie, of Los Angeles, Calif. Other guests at the Gray home last week were his cousin and wife, Mr: and Mrs. Orville Gray and sons from the San Francisco bay area. A freak accident occurred, at the Charles McKibbon home on Sardine creek last Sunday when Mrs. McKibbon had the misfor tune of going through the fruit house door, as the pruning shears came down and cut a large gash in her leg. The cut required 10 stitches. Four local youngsters visited the museum in Jacksonville last Tuesday. They were Linda Parker, Patty and Bobby Boye and Shirley Kell, who were ac companied by Mrs. Lester Par ker and Mrs. Clyde Kell. Betty Joe Nealy of Grants Pass is spending several days visiting in the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Jones on Sixth ave. Mrs. Ida McReynolds ' of Divide, Ore., and her daughter, Mrs. Richard Knight of Eugene, were receij guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Christen- 15-Year-OId Dies in Abandoned Mine Shalt Timmins, Ont. m A 15-year-old boy buried 12 hours in an abandoned mine shift was found -dead when rescue teams working through rockfalls dug him out Friday. Tears streaked the grimy faces of veteran gold miners when the crushed body of Ronald Blakemore was handed up the shaft. The weeping parents had left the top of the shaft only 10 min utes before the miners reached the crushed body. Another boy, Bonar Scholes, 16, also fell down the shaft but was hoisted to safety five hours later. Benny The Dishwasher Freed of Rape Charge De Land, Fla. (m Ed ward L. (Benny the Dishwasher) Bedwell headed home to a "new life" in Chicago Thursday, free of a charge that he raped a 13-year-old girl. A six-man circuit court Jury deliberated only 25 minues Wednesday night before return ing its verdict of innocent. Bedwell was first arrested in Chicago early this year after he confessed to the brutal mur der of two teen-age sisters. He repudiated his confession and was freed but immediately re arrested on a Florida warrant charging him with statuary rape of a 13-year-old girl at Oak Hill, Fla., ir March, 1956. sen on Highway 99, north of Gold Hill. George Ellis returned recent to his home in Calistoga, Calif., after a three week's visit in the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Christensen. Average Costs Down Al Camp Domiciliary Camp White Average daily cost per member for operating the Veterans Administration domiciliary at Camp White the fiscal year 1957-57 was $5.03, five cents less than the average in 1955-56. , Total operating cost was $1, 667,879.17 for the year ending June 30, 1957. This compared with $1,649,481.27 the previous year. These figures are compiled by the domiciliary in a brochure of statistics. There were 1,179 persons ad mitted and 1,063 discharged during the fiscal year, compared with 790 admitted and 863 dis charged the previous year. Twenty items are listed as engineering projects completed during the year. They include such projects as the baseball grandstand and lights, recrea tion area including barbecue pit and fish pond, pitch and putt golf course, cafeteria, and va rious building renovations and office transfers. A total of 18 individual and 17 group suggestions were re reived under the incentive awards program. One cash award was paid, for $160. The annual payroll came to $1,033,844.64 the last fiscal year. In 1955-56 it was $1,020,-623.45. There are more than 50,000 Indians in New Mexico, of var ied cultures and languages. These includes Navajos, Apaches, Utes, live in their traditional homelands. Sunday, August 25, 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE NINE Four Members of House Need Replacing Soon Salem ttPI Replacement of four members of the State House of Representatives who served in the 1957 regular session will be required before the special ses sion convenes October 28, Secre tary of State Mark Hatfield said Friday. In a call from Denver, Colo., Hatfield said he has directed the county courts of Clackamas, Lane, Columbia and Baker coun ties to convene to select replace ments for former Rep. Herman Chindgren, who died; Richard Eymann, wio joined the State Tax commission; Robert Klem sen, who moved his residence; and Robert Steward, who be came director ofagriculture. Pinball Operators in Eugene Given Notice Eugene flJV-District Attorney Eugene Venn Friday gave pin ball operators 1.0 days to dispose of their machines before they were seized by sheriffs deputies. Venn said in a letter mailed to some 230 persons that he con siders the machines as gambling devices and therefore subject to seizure by the sheriff and then destruction by court order.
