Mayo Foundation Dr Alvarez THE HICH GIFT OF LOVE A fine woman writes to tell me what the love and confidence and courage she gave her hus band did for him. Ten years ago, when she married him, he was broken physically and financially, as the result of marriage with a woman who had been un loving and al ways demanding and critical. He was then out of a job, pen niless, and hopeless of ever get ting going again. With love back of him, he soon got a job; his physical appearance improved, and his whole outlook on life changed. Today he is a hand some, confident man who has a home, two automobiles, and a sizable bank account. His wife says he is a fine lovable man, and she is very happy with him. Certainly, this tells us all we need to know about a good woman's love and affection can do for a man. Word 'Affection' I like the word "affection" even more than I like the word "love" because affection means the undemanding," quiet, kindly, and giving type of love such as a good father has for a favorite daughter. Love sometimes is a stormy emotion mixed up with selfishness, jealousy, and a re current desire to punish. As psychiatrists often point out, many a person's "love" is a strange mixture of love and hate. A while ago I saw a woman who could not go on the street alone without going into hys terics. She could not' go fishing with her husband because, as soon as they got out on the high way, she .would become panicky and have to go home. The couple's love-life was gone be cause when he showed signs of affection she would start weep ing. I got the woman into a room away from .the husband and said, "What are you punishing him for? What did he ever do to you that outraged you?" She said, "I caught him oncp with another woman." I said, "Why, then, don't you leave him?" And she said, "Oh, no, I can't leave him; KoKo Says: Look Mom! Here's a Terrific Back to School SPECIAL On Boys' and Girls' Shoes! Then she told me that she guessed she wouldn't go to the market alone because that compelled him to pay for a servant to go with her. He was crazy about fishing but wouldn't go without her, so her inability to go out of the city limits in a car punished him- "good and plenty." Following my usual custom in these cases, I showed the woman that she was punishing herself, too, and that if she kept on she could ruin her life. Her behavior was more of a nuisance to her than it was worth. She then agreed to make a big effort to stop her habits of punishing her husband; she agreed she had gotten even with him sufficient ly, and a few months later I heard she was going on the street alone and was going fishing without getting' all tense and hysterical.
