SIX MEDrOHD (OREGOW) MAIL THI8UNB Church News Miss Rieben Joins Presbyterian Church Staff Here Miss Lucille Rieben, who has been appointed as director of Christian Education for the First Presbyterian church, will be introduced to the congrega tion at both Sunday morning worship services. -Miss Rieben is a graduate of Lewis and Clark College and recently received her master's degree from San Francisco Theological seminary. She was formerly on the staff of the First Presbyterian Church In Eureka and in Portland. During the month of August, Dr. D. Kirkland West has been preaching on the different as pects of prayer, and Sunday he will bring the last in this series of sermons when he speaks on 'After This Manner Pray . Soloist at both services will be Mrs. Effie Kurtz, soprano, sing ing "Prayer." Offertory music will be provided by Harlalee Wilson, guest violinist from Derv ver, Colo. Youth worship service for combined Geneva and Westmin ster fellowship will be held in the Fellowship hall at 7 p.m. and will be ed by Dr. West. Fol lowing the joint service, each fellowship will meet for Indi vidual discussions led by the members of the respective groups. Firesides will be held afterwards. Wednesday, Aug. 28, Dick Corum, Gordon Fleming, Jim Fontaine and Ruby Rowan, who are officers of the Southwest Youth Presbytery, will go to Portland with the Rev. John Reynolds to attend the annual conference for Westminster Fel lowship Synod and Presbytery officers. Christian Church Tells Week's Meets The music Sunday morning at the First Christian church will be by Mrs. J. T. Jackson. She is visiting- her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W C Piper, ministers The 10:30 a.m. morning wor ship sermon Sunday will be "The Letter to the Church in Corinth. The 7:30 p.m. evening service sermon will be "The Monkey Wrench of the Bible." There is to be a reception in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Piper on their 35th wedding anniversary Aug. 30, 1957 in the First Chris tian church fellowship hall at 7:30 p.m. This is given by the church in appreciation for the work the Pipers have been doing for them. The Christian Youth fellow ship is having an evening of out door fun, including hamburgers, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed ward Conner Jr., 906 South New town, on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Miss Gloria Haggard has been selected as a delegate of the University of Oregon Christian House to attend the National Disciple Student Fellowship con ference in Green Lake, Wis., from Aug. 25 through Aug. 31. Adventist Church To Hold First Services In New Auditorium The Ashland Seventh-day Ad ventist church will celebrate their first Sabbath in the audi torium of the new church at Clark and Garden Way this week. An area wide rally will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday. Mu sic for the service will be by Elder Harold Turner, pastor of the Grants Pass church, and by the Ashland Children's Choir. Guest speaker of the afternoon is Elder G. H. Liscombe, North Pacific Union conference home missionary leader of Portland. Local pastor is Elder Floyd Bresee. Secretary To Hold Services Sunday Cave Junction Dr. Ernest Harold, executive secretary of the coordinating council of the Oregon Conference of Methodist Churches, will conduct morning worship services at Immanuel Methodist church Sunday. . Dr. Harold was born in Eng land and received his training there. He was a Methodist pastor In this country for many years. The Rev. Robert Kingsbury will leave Saturday for Dead Indian Soda Springs, where he is to serve on the staff of the high school church camp for a week. Youth Meet Tonight, Hike Scheduled Seventh-day Adventist Teens for Christ will meet tonight at 8 p.m. in the school park. Medford Pathfinders will meet at the Rogue River Academy grounds at 3 p.m. Sunday. A ten mile hike is scheduled for the group who have been working towards a honour in that field this summer. PICNIC SUNDAY A picnic will be held for the congregation of the Congrega tional church on the church grounds Sunday at 4 p.m. Methodist Youth Urge China Travel Denver, Colo. (W : The National Conference of Metho dist Youth urged Thursday night the United States lift its ban on travel to Communist China. "We feel that travel invita tions of some foreign govern ments, for example Red China, are an overture of friendship," read a resolution which was ap proved by a vote of 78-22 after three hours debate. "We feel that refusal to per mit the carrying out of such overtures is not consistent with the policy of a nation striving for peace," the resolution lead. The resolution also askei the United States to "seriously con sider" withdrawing its opposi tion to the seating of Red China in the United Nations but with safeguards for the For- mosans and "millions of non- Communist Chinese who have fled the mainland." The 225 Methodist youth dele gates had earlier recommended an end to racial, segregation and discrimination in industry, housing and religious worship. , John Corson of Modesto. Calif., was elected president of the organization Thursday. Film Set For Sunday Evening "A Mighty Fortres' a docu mentary film from March of Time, will be presented Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at the First Baptist church. The production deals with the upsurge of religious em phasis around the world and covers the Billy Graham cru sade in the British Isles and throughout Europe. ' On Sunday morning the Rev. James W. Neely, pastor of the church, will preach on the theme, "Christian Sacrifices." Music for the service will be provided by Miss Jane Neely and by a mixed quartet. Sunday evening the Rev. Had- don Robinson, assistant to the pastor, will bring another In a special series on the home. The message, dealing with Christian wives, will be entitled, The Word to the Wives is Sufficient." Music for this service will be provided by the young people of the congregation. Nazarene Youth Group Pledges Money For Use by Missionaries The youth group of the First Church of the Nazarene in the Nazarene Missionary society has pledged $125 on a large paper cutter to be used by missionaries, the Rev. and Mrs. Earl Mostell er, on the Cape Verde islands. This was the largest pledge made by any youth group on the Oregon - Pacific district of the Church of the Nazarene. In order to raise their pledge, the young people have sponsored a tour through Weeks and Orr Furniture store, collected scrap iron and washed cars. They will be washing cars at Barnes Shell Service station on West Main st. across from the YMCA, Sat urday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guest Speaker Sunday; Pastor to Return Guest speaker Sunday at the II a.m. service at the Eastwood Baptist church. North Keene Way dr. at Ridgeway, will be the Rev. H. Richard Cooper. Mr. Cooper graduated last year from California Baptist seminary and is a member of the church here. He plans to enter the chaplaincy. He will speak in the absence of the pastor, the Rev. Richard M. Jones, who is on vacation and will return Aug. 27. A teachers and workers con ference will be held Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Eastwood Baptist church is located north of Hedrick Junior high school and is affiliated with the American Baptist con vention. Open Air Services Planned for Talent Faith Tabernacle, Ashland, will conduct open air services in Talent behind the city hall building Monday, Aug. 26 through Saturday each evening at 7:30 p.m. The services will in clude singing, organ music and a sermon. The services were held a week ago in Medford with a large at tendance reported. The public is invited to attend. Be Sure to See . . . Fuiten Butte Falls Pastor Moves to Portland Area Butte Falls The Rev. John Fuiten will conduct his final services at the Butte Falls As sembly of God church Sunday. He and his family will move next to Portland area where he will assume duties as pastor of the Aloha Assembly of God church. Mr. Fuiten, his wife and three children, moved to Butte Falls nine years ago. A fourth child was born the following year. During their stay in Butte Falls, the Fuiten's, along with mem bers of the church, have con structed the building that in cludes the church and parson age. In addition to his duties as pastor, the pastor has been em ployed as "Forest Service clerk and dispatcher for the past eight years. He has served as Presbyter for the Southern Ore gon Assemblies since 1952. Before coming to Butte Falls, Mr. Fuiten pastored at Bay City, Ore. Both Mr. and Mrs. Fuiten attended Central Bible institute in Springfield, Mo. Prior to entering the ministry, Mr. Fuiten was sheriff of Mor row county, Ore. The ministers of the Rogue Valley 'Assemblies honored Mr. and Mrs. Fuiten recently at a Fellowship Meeting at Rogue River, and presented them with luggage. The Fuitens will assume their new duties at the Aloha Assem bly of God church on Sept. 1. The Rev. Leslie .Martin of Cave Junction, pastor of the Kerby church will assume duties in Butte Falls. 'Ten Commandments' Film To Start Medford Showing Cecil B. DeMille's production, "The Ten Commandments," be gins a two-shows-a-day engage ment at the Holly theater in Medford, Thursday, Aug. 29. The film which runs three hours, thirty-nine minutes with a 15 minute intermission, will be shown at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. daily. This run follows an invita tional preview which was held July 31 and attended by local ministers, civic leaders, and press representatives. "The Ten Commandments," which opened in New York, Nov. 9, 1956, tells the story of Moses. The huge cast of famous per formers includes Charlton Hes- tcn as Moses, Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo, Debra Paget, John Derek, Sir Cedric Hard- IDS Officials In Medford This Weekend Two high-ranking officials of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be in Medford this week to attend the quarterly conference of the Klamath Stake of that denomin ation Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24 and 25. The visitors will be Elder Mark E. Petersen of the Council of the Twelve Apostles and Wal ter Dansie of the Welfare com mittee. Four times each year each of the 246 stakes, corresponding in many respects to a diocese of the Mormon or LDS church holds a conference of .all its members, and one or more of the general authorities of the organization is sent out from headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, to attend. Reports of progress and activ ities within the stake during the preceding three months are given, and the visiting officials address various sessions of the conference giving counsel and advice to members on matters both temporal and spiritual. The conference sessions to which the public is invited, will be held in the Medford church at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday. The ranking official of the church in this area, holding the title of stake president, is Car roll William Smith, 806 Clay st., Ashland. Presbyterian Services Set for Central Point The union services for Presby terian churches in the valley will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. in the First Presbyterian church, Central Point. The .Rev. Robert Bridge of the Jacksonville church will continue in his series of sermons on "Questions Asked Jesus." Sunday at 9:45 a.m. Dr. Nor man K. Tully, First Presbyteri an church, Central Point, will speak on "A Perfect and Im mortal Song." The service will observe the 250th anniversary of the birth of Charles Wesley. Wesley, the 18th child of a British rector, wrote an esti mated 6,500 hymns. His brother, John, founded , Methodism and also translated hymns into Eng lish. Ashland "Tremendous Trifles' will be the sermon topic at the 11 a.m. morning worship service at the First Presbyterian church, Ashland. The Rev. B. J. Holland will preach. wicke, Nina Foch, Martha Scott, Judith Anderson, and Vincent Price, to name a few. The first half of the film deals with the first 30 years of Moses' life. It starts with his mother setting him afloat on the Nile and continues through his years as a general in the Pharaoh's army, to his betrayal and exile to the desert. . Following the intermission the audience sees the miracles of the burning bush, the terror filled plagues, and the exodus scenes, followed by the blasting of the Commandments into the Sinai granite by the fiery finger of God and the parting .of the Red sea. The seven day run of the film in Medford will be the first and I only road show engagement in southern Oregon this year, ac cording to local theatre officials.
