Police Find Note Confessing, Murder The Dalles AT) Police here Thursday discovered a scribbled, unsigned note in which the writ er confessed the slaying last Fri day of Mary Matthew, 9. The message was found in a pickup truck parked near the scene of the crime. The author said he planned to commit sui cide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills. He said there would be no one to mourn him. Police appealed to the writer of the note to identify himself and officers were dispatched for a search of transient "jungles," since the person had identified himself only as a "bum. Mary Matthew died in a Port land hospital after being struck on the head by a blunt instru ment as she slept outdoors with her playmate, Barbara Heldt, 10. The Heldt girl also was struck, but hot seriously hurt. Four Cases Continued Pending New Reporis Four persons appeared'before Judge Edward Kelly in circuit court Friday morning. All of the cases were continued pending reports. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence John son, 781V4 Beatty st., pleadedt guilty to charges of unlawfully obtaining public assistance; Jo seph .W. Rawhauser, 46, St. Louis hotel, Medford, was ar raigned on a charge of forgery; and John Warren, 1167V& North Main St., Ashland, had his case continued to appear before Judge H. K. Hanna. Foot Traffic Mars New Library Steps Residents are asked not to walk on the freshly poured con crete steps to the main entrance of the Medford public library for approximately a week, li brary officials reminded the public today. They reported that some of the work has already had to be redone due to persons walking on the wet cement. While the concrete is drying patrons are asked not to use the slot by the library main door for returning books. Books returned during this period should be taken to the library during open hours, 10 a.m. through 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The public is asked to use the ground floor entrance on the west side of the library. The new steps replace those built more than 50 . years ago that were badly chipped and cracked, library officials said. The new steps will have non skid tops on each step. Contractor for the project is Warren H. Conrad. Head Injuries Result From Local Accident Karen Alden Burrill, 2, Post Office Box 240, Red Blanket rd. in ' Prospect, suffered head in juries w"hen she ran into the side of a panel truck in Medford early yesterday afternoon. Driver of the truck, Guy Dun can McMartin, route 2, box 325, Central Point, said he was mov ing about 10 miles per hour after leaving the intersection of Sixth and Central ave. when the girl dashed into the street from an empty parking space. McMartin stepped on the brakes and stop ped but the girl ran into the side of the truck. - She was taken to a physician by her mother, Mrs. Gladys Burrill. where she was given first aid and x-rays, according to city, police. . Don Savage of Crater F.F.A. placed second in sheep show manship. In F.F.A. Swine judging Jerry Leonard, Crater, won Grand Champion on his fat market hog and David Young of Crater won grand champion with is regis tered Berkshire gilt. Other F.F.A. swine awards were: Allen Barnes, Crater, first with his Tamworth sow and first with is Tamworth sow and lit ter. David Young, Crater, second with is registered Berkshire gilt. The Crater F.F.A. chapter placed first with its Chapter owned Berkshire boar. Ronald Meade, Crater, won grand cham pion and a first place ribbon on his pen of three fat hogs. Clackamas Jury Returns Manslaughter Verdict Oregon City (IP) The Clackamas county grand jury Thursday returned a manslaugh ter indictment against Clyde Wemain Feyer, 19, in connec tion with the fatal shooting of his brother, Leonard A. Feyrer, 21. last Saturday. Leonard Feyrer was fatally wounded at the family's farm home about two miles southeast of Molalla. Clyde Feyrer was held in Clackamas county jail in lieu of 53,000 bail. He faces a maxi mum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $5,000 fine if con victed. Hargitay to Make Picture Debut' With Girlfriend, Jay ne Mansfield By VERNON SCOTT United Press Hollywood Writer Hollywood (IP! Mickey Hargitay, Jayne Mansfield's mus cular boyfriend, makes his screen' debut with the blonde glamour girl in her new picture. "I play Bobo, a TV-type Tar- zan," Hargitay says proudly. "It gives me a good chance to show off my muscles. Our director, Frank Tashlin, said I had a good build so he put me iff a pair of leopard skin trunks. In one scene I jump out a window and they didn't use a stunt man, either." Next to marrying Jayne, Mick ey's ambition in life is to become an actor. I'd like to marry Jayne to day," he said sadly. "But her divorce rsn't final till Oct. 21. I hope we can get married right after that." Hargitay, who won the "Mr. Universe" title in London in 1955, is a friendly, hulking man who stands six feet, three inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. Bachman 'was standing on an eight-inch girder when he, ap parently lost his balance, fell four stories to another girder and then plunged the remaining live stories to the ground.
