Mayo Foundation Dr Alvarez Handbook For One-Handers The other day, as I saw a man with an empty right sleeve, the thought came to me, when a man loses an arm, how much he must quickly learn about taking care of himself: tying his tie and his shoe laces even putting on his coat. On reach ing my office, I found a copy a urn mmi m 0f Mr. Aaron l.. uanzigs "H andbook for One-Handers A Prac tical Guide for Those Who Ha- e Lost the Func tional Use of an Arm or Hand" (Feder ation of the Hadnicapped, 211 West 14th st., New York 11, N.Y.) and there I found the answers to the questions that had come into my mind. There I read how a one-handed man can button and unbutton his clothes, put on a glove, shave, cut his fingernails, put on a wrist watch, read a newspaper, open a can or a jar, cut meat at the table, butter his bread, make a bed, play golf, get on a horse, drive a car, shake hands, and shuffle a deck of cards! Neatness And Cleanliness In Moderation While on the subject of inter esting books, I will mention one I chuckled over recently .The Family Book of Child Care," by Niles Newton (Harper's). The chapter that amused me was headed, "Neat and Clean in Moderation." I thought of all the many fussy and precise women I ve known who made themselves unhappy and ill and full of headaches and nerves be cause they were always trying to change a normally rowdy and dirty boy into a prim, white- collared and velvet-jacketed Lit tle Lord Fauntleroy. A few hun dred times I have told such mothers, "Don't worry about your boy's dislike of bathing and dressing neatly; one of these days, when he is 14 or so he II discover a girl, and then you'll be fussing because he spends -an hour in the bathroom, scrub bing himself and grooming his hair." Hydrocortisone Counteracts Rattle-Snake Venom Recently.Drs. William- Deich mann, John E. Dees, M. L. Kep linger, John L. Farrell, and Wm. E. MacDonald, Jr., reported that hydrocortisone is a very life saving drug when given to ani mals that have suffered poison ing from ratttle-snake venom. Instead of only the 17 per cent of the untreated animals that survived, 75 per cent of treated animals were saved.
