HENRY Written for United Press The multitudes are loosed to day from fixed standards and from a vital relationship to God. Whether won to Christ one-by-one or in throngs, they had bet ter be enlisted swiftly, for unless they are brought to Christ, they will be abandoned to the service of false gods in our secular and materialistic age. While the New Testament emphasizes the necessity of per sonal spiritual decision, it no where looks with skepticism and disdain upon attempts to evan gelize .the masses. At Pentecost 3,000 converts were added to the church. From the beginning, therefore, the Christian recog nized that ngpss conversions are not necessarily superficial. -The real issue is not whether conversions are mass--produced or custom - made, but whether they are God's work or man's. Liberal Protestantism is criti cal of Dr. Billy Graham because of his success with New Testa ment evangelism in which it dis believes, and not because there is anything intrinsically harmful about a bulk response to Chris tian evangelism. What Graham Believes Dr. Graham preaches the New Testament message that every man is a doomed sinner exposed to divine wrath, and that the sinner can be restored to fellow ship with God only by the Holy Spirit's supernatural regenera tion on condition of personal trust in the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ, the virgin-born, bodily - resurrected Son of God. The liberal theolo sy's rejection of this New Testa ment message is the deepest ground of its criticism of Billy Graham. In a recent article prepared for the United Press, Dr. Harold E. Fey, editor of the Christian Century, asserts that ma?s produced conversions are ephe meral, and implies that one-byr one conversions through the lo cal churches, without fixed doc trinal beliefs and without emo tional upheaval, are superior. Dr. Fey contribues a shallow and disappointing estimate of the Madison Square Garden campaign. Numbers of converts in Madi son Square Garden have pre "viously experienced the type of individual spiritual adjustment for which Dr. Fey pleads, and have found it spiritually inade quate and superficial due to the shallow theological dimension of the liberal Protestant theology. . The fact is that Pr. Graham College Team to Lead1 Eastwood Worship A gospel deputation team from Linfield college, McMinn ville. Ore., will lead in the wor ship service at the Eastwood Baptist church. North Keene Way dr. at Ridgeway Sunday at 11 a.m. The team is composed of members of the student body at Linfield, some of whom are preparing to go into the min istry. Music will be provided by ream members. The team will bring the worship in the absence of thg pastor, the Rev. Richard M. Jones, who is on vacation. Eastwood Baptist church is lo cated north of Hedrick Junior High school and is affiliated with the American Baptist Con vention. Ruch Church Pastor Ordained at Service Earl Best, pastor of the new rtucn ummuiuiy cuurcn lur more than a year, was ordained as a minister at ordination serv ices at Provolt Community Church last month. Lester Ste "vens, pastor of Provolt church, also was ordained at, that time. The Rev. George Kehoe of Mult nomah School of Bible served on the ordination council. Others on the council includ ed the Rev. Harold Anderson of Murphy, the Rev. T. S. Gapen of Applegate, the Rev. Virgil Terry of Williams. Alford Dy moch of First Baptist church in Grants Pass, H. H. Blanchard of Murphy, Herbert Elmore and Cecil Culbertson of Provolt, W. L. Green and Glenn Hunter of Ruch. BIBLE STUDY "The Holy Spirit Third Per son of Trinity or God's Active Force" from the July 15 Watch tower will be the Bible study topic Sunday at the 6 pjn. meet ing at the Kingdom Hall of Je hovah's Witnesses. TOPICS TOLD Sunday at 11 a.m. the Rev. Escil Hiser of the Church of the Brethren will speak on "The Grace That Shares". Topic for CBYF at 6:30 pjn. will be "Be ing Christian on Our Highways" whUe the Adult forum will be on "The Doctrine of Christian Experience." SEMON SUBJECT "Soul" will be the subject of the First Church of Christ, Sci entist sermon at 10 ajn. Sunday. activities of the local church. Precisely the failure of the lo cal churches to fulfill this task creates the urgency of mass evangelism. Multitudes of those who come to the Garden have never been reached by church men of Dr. Fey's persuasion with an allegedly superior technique of conversion or they would not be responding to Mr. Graham s ministry. Converts Personally Counselled Moreover, even in the Gra ham campaigns the appeal for public decision does not exclude personal counselling and com mitment; every convert goes into the counselling rooms, and is encouraged in Christian growth through personal fellow ship. If Dr. Graham were to lead hundreds of converts night ly i n t 0o decision for Christ through personal counselling, Church News Missions Service Set For Sunday Special services for missions will be held Sunday at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran church, 1020 East Main St., according to the pastor, the Rev. SERMON SUBJECT "Faithful and Wise"' will be the sermon subject Sunday at 11 a.m, at the Ascension Luther-! an church, service. 1 rather than mass evangelism, the i voice of liberal Protestantism would still be critical of his min istry because of its distrust of the New Testament revelation. What is most disappointing about Dr. Fey's estimate is the bland way in which he assures us that "experience has shown repeatedly" that the person who accepts Christ "in such circum stances as those in Madison Square Garden is very likely to lose his way." We may be for given for inquiring what re peated experience of campaigns such as those in the Garden have come into Dr. Fey's experience? And on what basis the results of the Garden campaign can be prejudged before the campaign itself has ended, and the roll of converts completed? I fear that Dr. Fey has given us s re port of what he hopes will be the fact, rather than a factual I statement of the character of 'mass evangelism.
