Mayo FoundaUon At:" Tteetoeele: What It It? WonCn want to know what is a rectocele. Many a woman, O during a hard labor, has her, pryvic floor so badly torn that no longer oare there any mus cles to hold the womb up As it comes down, the wall of the rectum comet down with it. Simi larly, the blad der cof9es way down, and this is called a i cysioceie. unen, wun a (&vstoce the urine which ter3s to stagnate in the bladder gets infected, and then the wom an has frequency of urination wi soma burning. In these cases, the Htst thing to do is O have a good surgeon perform ajj operatioi. If he can find enough muscle with which to make a new . pelvic floor, well and good. If not, he may turn the uterus on its side and use it to plug the hole. Often, I strongly advise a wemjn to have thisnpperation performed as soon as she is done with her child bearing because it may well be that after suffering terribly fof 30 yeaf or more, she will fi nally Te driven to accept the surgeon's help. Softening of ih Bones OOf the Spin i , Old people will sometimes de velop a flattening of the bones (osteoporosis) of the spine (verte brae) which causes them to col lapse. As a result, the person tends quickly r become round shouldered, and perhaps ej-en with his head at Ught angles to his body. I remember a woman of 55 who, after the menopause, tid her chest had seemed sud denly to collapse so that she got very round-shouldered and soon lost four inches in height. Naturally, with this collapse of he5 vertebrae, there came pres sure on some of the nerves that come out from the spine, and she suffered greatly from neural gic pains in her chest-wall and in her upper abdomen. I had to get an orthopedist to put her into O a strong corset that kept her spina from collapsing still far ther. Then we tried the usual treatment of giving her large amounts of ovarian hormone. 01d men also can sometimes get this osteoporosis of the bones of the spine, and they, Joo, will .get badly round shouldered. They are usually given male hormone. Some doctors have tried giving bo male and fe male hormone. I have seen many cases in which this hormone treatment did not work. Per haps some of the new and stronger hormones, Recently e veloped, will do better. Unfor tunately, we do not .know enough about the chemistry of the process. The Inheritance of Schizophrenia When, in this column, I have spoken of the enormous amount of evidence t sh that psy choses commonly develop on the basis of an inherited tendency, many lay persons, but no psy chiatrists, have written to scold me for my supposed lack of knowledge of the many articles and books on the subject. I wish cent. If one of my parents had been schizophrenic, my chances of getting the disease would have been 6.4 per cent, and if both my parents had been schizo phrenic, my chances of getting tire disease would have been 68.1 per cent. If I had an alike-twin brother who was schizophrenic, my chances of getting the disease would have been about 87 per cent. These figures are taken from Dr. Kallmann's interesting book on the subject. In many cases, the child of a schizo phrenic inherits only a mild form of the disease, and becomes simply a shy, retiring "schizoid" person. A Person Cured Suddenly I've always marveled at those persons with a nervous trouble who are suddenly cured by read ing a sentence, or a poem, or an article, or part of a book. This material acts like a key in a lock to straighten the per son out. It seems to supply the idea that the person needed to reorganize his mind and his life. In his autobiography, the great j John Stuart Mill wrote of a i time when he was 22, and after years of overwork as a child prodigy had gone into a mental depression. Then he picked up Wordsworth's poems and found in them a couple of thoughts that promptly cured him. One j was that the world is beautiful, and the other was that one can develop one's character and not just accept it ready-made. Contest lo Reduce Porcupines To Be Held Another Year The Medford Kiwanis club. Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and 12 lumber con cerns have decided to sponsor another year-long contest to re duce the population of porcu pines in Jackson county. The first contest ended July 1 with a total of 7,575 porcu pines accounted for during the year. The current contest will run from July 1, 1957, to June 30, 1958. All persons between 12 and 18 years of age who live in Jackson county are eligible to compete for prizes, a spokesman said. A total of $450 in prize money will be awarded to nine winners. Three awards will be made at the end of the year, three on Dec. 31, and three for the six months period ending June 30, 1958. In addition to the cash prizes, the county clerk will pay a boun ty of 50c for each porcupine kill ed in the county by anyone re gardless of age. The skin from the nose including both nostrils must first be well salted and dried before it is presented as evidence. Young people who wish to en ter the contest must first obtain a receipt from the county clerk and then register that receipt with the Chamber of Commerce at 328 South Central ave., Med ford. Foresters and farmers are hopeful that another year or two of effort will result in reducing the number of porcupines in the county to a point where the damage the rodents do to young timber trees and orchards 'is much less than it has been in recent years, the spokesman said. NO SCHOOL SALE Valparaiso, Ind. (IP) Red faced school officials at nearby Washington Township assured townspeople the local school is not for sale. They said a "for sale" sign nailed to the front door of the school by some prankster was intended to adver tise the sale of a number of old school furniture sets. On The Side By E. V. Durling 1 (Distributed by King Futures Syndicate, Inc.) Am asked if it has ever been so hot in New York City that an egg could be fried by merely putting it on a sunny sidewalk. Believe it may have been that hot at some time but have never heard of anybody frying an egg on the sidewalk of New York. Incidentally, a Californian told me that on an August afternoon he had fried an egg by putting it on the sidewalk in front of a store in Palm Springs, Calif. Please Note Speaking of inflation, as everybody seems to be now, you can at this time in New York City get 440 French francs for a United States dollar. When I was in Paris in the summer of 1939 you could get only 33 francs for a United States Dol lar. In 1918 in Paris during World War I you could get only five francs to a United States dollar. Asking Queries from clients. Q. What do you think of the Floyd Patterson-Pete Rademacher cham pionship bout? A. It could be in teresting. Pete has a psychologi cal advantage. Patterson better not be over - confident. Then there is the possibility of a lucky punch such as Firpo landed on J. Dempsey in that historic brawl at the Polo Grounds. I have no prediction to make as to the outcome of the Patterson Rademacher affair but as Harry Balogh would say, "May the more proficient participant emerge triumphant." Her best feature films were "Tess of The Storm Coun try" and "Rags." Her last film was "Secrets" made in 1933. She has 'been married to Charles "Buddy" Rogers, her third hus band, for 20 years. It was David Grauman, theatre owner of San Francisco, who first called Miss Pickford "America's Sweet- heart". Get It Right Dr. Edward C. Kilbourne, 102 years old of Seattle, Wash., is the country's oldest dentist. So I note it said. Dr. Kilbourne is retired. The oldest active dentist in this country is 88-year-old Dr. Arthur White of Pasadena, Calif., who has been practicing dentistry for 66 years. Those Triplets Curiosity has been expressed by some subscribers as to the weights at birth of the triplets that 42-year-old Londoner, Mrs. Rose Cohen, recently gave birth to. The triplets have been named Barbara, Susan and Patricia. Their weights at birth were Barbara, four pounds, 14 ounces; Susan, four pounds, 8 ounces, and Patricia, three pounds, 3 ounces. Amoner The Married What is your nickname for your wife? Or should I say pet name? Feminine subscriber who married when 16 and her hus band was 18 says her spouse calls her "Puppy". Inspiration of this name, she confesses, was "the mess" she made of home managing and cooking when first married. Her husband said, "You can get in more trouble than a pup." And he has called her "Puppy" ever since. A Bostonian wants to know if there has ever been a "society wedding" in Manhattan at which the bridesmaids wore red.
