Frank F. Whoever heard of a girl crazy enough to throw over a guy because he has too much money? That's my finance, Rose. We are both in our middle 20s and were planning to get married in the fall. We have both been working for around six years and have saved quite a bit of money. Rose"s family was going to buy our furniture as a wedding gift. Well,' a few months ago I de cided on a sweep-stakes ticket. It was a windfall. So I decided to have a good time on it. I bought a new car and took Rose around to the smallest places. I bought a lot of clothes and gifts for Rose. Most of the money ran through my fingers pretty quick ly, but I had a swell time. There is still some left. But Rose blew her top and handed my ring when she realized how little there was. We'll still have more then we counted on. , Rose R I told Frank right away that I thought the money should go into the down pay ment on a home, but he just ignored me and went out im mediately to get the fanciest, most expensive car he could find. When I said to him hi should have talked it over with me first, he said I wasn't his wife and yet and didn't any right to boss him around. It's not just the fact that the money is gone which bothers me, but the way Frank acted when he had it. He talks about my blowing my top. Well, he really blew his. He bought such crazy things stuff you could do without, like a watch practically guaranteed to survive an H-bomb explosion. He went around treat ing "friends' he hardly ever talked to and tipped waiters' hieher than the cost of the meal. Everyone says I'm silly and Frank will settle down now, but I'm disgusted with him. The Council: Good fortune, like bad, is a stress situation that can bring out the best or the worst in an individual. Rose was fortunate to have gotten this opportunity to see Frank under these extraordinary conditions before marriage. The things brought out in him at this time would probably come out in less dramatic form under the ordinary, everyday conditions of marriage. Rose would not like them any better then. It can be argued that Frank's behavior was not so very bad. A windfall is a windfall and doesn't usually happen more than once in a lifetime. Why not enjoy it? The argument is reasonable for a person who feels as Frank does about money. Rose does not. The question of how to spend money is a vital one in marriage. How money is spent is an indication of an individ ual's values. Even without the "windfall" Rose and Frank would be in strong conflict on values throughout their married life. No, Rose is not silly. She is conservative and cautious and wise enough to know she wouldn't be haopy living with a man like Frank.
