Corti was trapped with three other climbers high on a ledge of the mountain. Two of the three still missing were feared to have plunged to their deaths in a blizzard. Navy Civilian Cuts To Drop 3200 From Western Shipyards Washington OF) The Navy's planned defense cuts mean at least 3,200 workers in West Coast shipyards will be dropped from Se Navy payroll during the current fiscal year. The Navy joined the Defense Department economy drive Wed nesday, announcing it will drop a total of 18.9)0 civilian em ployees, most of them by Oct. 31. Hardest hit on the West Coast will be the San Francisco, Mare Island and Long Beach ship yards, Oakland Supply Center, and North Island Naval Air Sta tion, all in California, and the Puget Sound Shipyard in Wash ington. (W The vi bration of a heavy machine was believed today to have caused a cave-in which buried six work men alive under 200 tons of blue day. Rescuers used a crane, bull dozer and shovels to recover the bodies of the workmen, all Dutch immigrants, who died when the 35-foot deep sides of a wat? plant cofferdam collapsed Wednesday night. Four other workers escaped safely. . Several workmen on the scene said they believed the vibration of a piece of heavy machinery loosened the sides of the struc ture, rolling 15 t 25 feet of clay onto the workers as they poured a concrete fonn&ition and layed pipe for a city water works pumphouse. Investigation Promised Dresden police promised an intensive investigation into the accident. Authorities also indi cated Ontario provincial investi gators may enter the probe. The dead, all employed by the Keillor Construction CcT., of St. Thomas, were identified as Jan Oldervening, 45; Dick Ryksen, 45; Jan Bremer, 42; Nenne Ho vius, 45. and his son, Wilfrid, 23. and Henry Drenth, 50. Dresden is about 40 miles east of Mount Clemens, Mich., and about 50 miles northeast of Detroit. Marine Convoy Trucks Overturn; 20 Injured Belhaven, N.C. W Two trucks in a Marine convoy on its way to fight a big forest fire overturned in separate acci dents today, injuring 20 men. Eighteen Marines were in jured when a truck carrying 25 men overturned in a ditch near here. They were taken to a hospital here. Another wreck involving a truck in the same Marine Corps convoy from Camp Lejeune, N.C, turned over 30 miles east of here. Two men were injured in this accident. The convoy was moving slow ly along a foggy highway toward an area where a forest ftre has burned over 75.000 acres of swamp nd forest land in the pst two weeks. pleted by next June 30. Mare Island Shipyard, which has -9,786 civilian workers now, will be cut to between 9,000 and 9,500 by June 30. The Navy said the Aact number had not yet been determined. jOakland Supply Center, which has 6.003 civilians now, will lose 149 by Oct. 31 and a total of 343 by June 30. Vhe Long Beach Shipyard, with a present complement of 6,583, will be reduced to be tween 6,200 and 6,500. A spokes man for Sen. Thomas H. Kuchel (R-Calif ) said it was hoped that incoming repair work would keep the reduction to the mini mum figure given by the Navy. North Island NAS in San Diego county has 7,907 civilians now and will lose 553 in the next fiscal year. Puget Sound Shipyard, which has 11,327 now, will be cut to between 9.900 and 10,400 by Dec. 31. Premier Jawaharlal Nehru, ignoring technicalities, told a crowd of 200,000 at a flag-raising ceremony outside Delhi's his toric Red Fort that today is a day of "special significance" in Indian history. Nehru declared that India "wants friendship with all coun tries" even Pakistan, with which this country has been con tinually at odds during its 10 years of independence. . 'Shasta' Nuclear Device Firing Again Postponed Las Vegas. Nev. ran Unfa vorable weather conditions again have forced the 17th postpone ment in the firing of a medium sized nuclear device at the Ne vada proving grounds. The Atomic Energy Commis sion Wednesday postponed its Shasta test until Friday at 5 a.m. (p.d.t.) However, the AEC said if wind conditions fail to improve sufficiently to fire Shasta, another device, dubbed Franklin Prime, would be trig gered instead. Number of Diicrepancic -The magazine has said it dropped the story because of "a number of discrepancies" in Steeves' account of a 54-day struggle to civilization after bail ing out of a jet trainer in the High Sierras of California May 9. The Air Force said it is con ducting a routine investigation, but added that - it has found "nothing to disprove his story." Steeves, on temporary assign ment at Boiling Air Force Base outside Washington, denied any discrepancies and said, "It looks like they want to bring it into court." As for the possible divorce, Eisenhower Signs Bill To Delay Termination Washington 0ft The bill which postpones the deadline for termination of federal controls over the Klamath Indians tribe of Oregon was signed Wednes day by President Eisenhower. The bill postpones termination from 1958 to 1960. Steeves said, "It seems as if I am being rejected by a person I love more than anybody in the world. . ." Mrs. Steeves would give no details of her reported plans to divorce the airman except that their differences arose before his crash. Her attorney said a divorce was "in the discussion stage.'" Plane Not Found The Air Force said Wednesday Steeves' plane has not been found yet. A search is under way in the Sierra for the wreck age to find what caused the crash. Besides being unable to find anything wrong with his story to date, the Air Force said it i without leave.
