New Demands Voiced For Ban on Drinking On Passenger Planes Washington ItP) Airborne partying featuring a disrobing lady and a kiss for the wrong wife have led to new demands for a ban on tippling aboard air liners. But Chan Gurney, vice chair man of the Civil Aeronautics board, insists there is no reason for a ban on safety grounds. Sens. Strom Thurmond, (D-S.C), and Richard L. Neu berger (D-Ore.), both nondrink- ers, joined airline piloS and stewardesses Tuesday in urging a Senate Commerce subcommit tee that drinking aboard airlin ers should be stopped. Leads To Incidents President Rowland K. Quinn Jr., of the Air Line Stewardess es association testified that ser ving liquor aloft leads to inci dents ranging from being an noying to dangerous. Q 0 Quinn said that during the last six months in the skies over the United States: An inebriated passenger sat down in a darkened cabin one night to kiss his wife. He kissed the wrong woman. Another inebriated passen ger wandered into the plane's galley and began mixing his own drinks. One of a "group of Jolly boys" threw a partially filled fifth of whisky to or at a friend and hit another passenger. A woman in high spirits ' stood up in the cabin and un dressed herself. Passengers tak ing belated notice of the crew trying to put her clothes back on accused the crewmembers of trying to undress her. But a pretty, uniformed Na tional Airlines Stewardess told the committee that problems are not caused so much by liquor being served aboard planes as by passengers who come aboard tipsy or with bottles. The witness, Martha Ann Al exander of Miami, said that 8' other stewardesses flying out of Miami agreed with her and had signed a petition against the leg islation. Complaints About Cigars "I've had more complaints about cigars than drinking," she said. Thurmond, who is author of one bill to stop serving drinks aloft, told the group that "I have never found any one who could give me one reason for permit ting this hazard to continue, ex cept for the purpose of meeting competition. Neuberger, who seldom flies admitted under questioning that his knowledge of the hazards of airborne imbibing was based mostly on hearsay. But he said drinking should be banned on all flights commercial, mili tary and private for the safe ty of all. "Alcohol and flying do not mix any more than do drinking and driving," Thurmond said. Gurney said that so far the CAB has not found any case in which a flight's safety was jeo pardized by drinking. More Help Sought In Search For Boy Brazil, Ind. (IT) An appeal for more help wu issued today in the fruitless search for a 7-year-old boy who disappeared without a trace. The inch-by-inch door-by-door hunt by 75 to 100 volunteers and National Guardsmen through the South and North Side of this town of 12,000 Tuesday failed to turn up a single clue as to the whereabouts of Billy Earl Mar tin. Billy was last seen Saturday, about noon by his mother, and four hours later by a guitar strumming wanderer who lodged at Billy's home. The search has already in volved about 1,000 volunteers and National Guardsmen, Civil Air Patrol planes, drainage of nearby ponds and a thorough ground search within and out side the city. Billy's mother, Florence, 35, took a lie detector test which upheld her contention she has no idea what happened to him. Eugene Man Killed In Logging Accident Springfield, Ore.
