Doria O - today pictured cfiis friend, racketeer Johnny Dio, as a man barred by cruel society from at taining his desperate longing to be a respected labor leader. Doria, former secretary-treasurer of the AFL United Auto Workers, said the dapper Ne& York hoodlum "never had a chance," because of youthful indiscretinn which landed him in Sing Sing Prison for extor tion. "If society hadotreated Johnny Dio right, rather than convict and condemn him at every mrwe, he would have Peen an outstanding labor leader," Doria told the Senate Labor Rackets Committee. His impassioned defense of Dio took fire when Sen. Importer Sines 1794 Received Cash Presents "My guess is that he had be come tired of the part he played in and about the fringes of labor," said Doria. "He wanted at all costs to become an indivi dual respected in labor. "If Johnny Dio had had a great fortune, he would have given it up for that kind of title," Doria declared. Doria, who got an $80,000 "going-away" present when he quit the union, was called before Senate investigators to explain why he booosted Dio into the labor movement. As proof that Dio was "im bued with the real spirit of the labor movement," Doria said the handsome racketeer, who in voked the Fifth Amendment about 140 times last week in re fusing to answer all questions of the Rackets Committee, has not yet been convicted for anything he did as an offical of the UAW CIO. ' Dio ostensibly left the union in 1954. Living in California Mundt asked how Doria ex plained Dio's Equitable Research Associates, Inc., which the com mittee has called an outfit which sells protection against pickets and organizers from rival unions. "That might be the result of his frustration at not having at tained the things Jie sought," said Doria. Doria, who was secretary treasurer of the UAW-CIO for 14 years until he was forced to resign last February, gave his address as Encino, Calif., and said he is now "developing min ing properties in Arizona." Doria said that for part of the time he was secretary-treasurer of the international union at $15,000 a year, he was also the $7,800 a year secretary-treasurer of Local 286 in Chicago, though for some of this time he lived in California. In what could be an important break in the investigation, Angclo Inciso, who is accused of taking $300,000 with him when he stepped out of the union, said he would talk "and talk loud" to committee members. Dio also is said to have gotten $16,000 when the three quit the union in 1954. Lnciso haid in Chicago "I've got a lot to say and it should be very interesting" especially a juicy item" that he paid a $2,000 bribe to an official of the American Federation of Labor to keep the AFL from "muscling" him out of a Chicago union local. Bosion Papers Closed by Strike Boston W The publishers of the city's three major daily newspapers were to meet with union officials and Mayor John B. Hynes today to negotiate the strike which has choked off a 1,222,712 combined circulation. In an unexpected move Sun day the mayor contacted the leaders of both factions and ask ed them to meet with him either at his office or the State Labor Board. Early today pickets paced the walks surrounding the Morning and Evening Globe, the Herald Traveler, and the Record-American-Advertiser. The publishers suspended operations when the 300 mailers walked off their jobs Friday evening and other unions . within the newspaper plants supported the action. Union chief Max Milstein quickly accepted the mayor's offer Sunday but warned that "the publishers will have to make the first move." Later the mayor announced the newspaper executives had agreed to the meeting. Millstein said the union, a branch of the . International Typographical Union, wants the present $94.13 weekly boosted to $110. He said this figure was "closer to the national average." Milk Production Up Half Billion Pounds Washington (IB The Agri culture department said Sunday night milk production in the first half of 1957 increased a half bililon pounds, or 1 per cent above the same period last year. Prices to farmers for milk averaged a little above a year earlier in the first half. Retail prices for dairy products also were slightly higher. Vega Forms Highest Point In Sky's Summer Triangle By FAY BENTLEY On Aug. 16 at 9 p.m. blue white Vega, shining like a dia mond near the western edge of the 'Milky Way, will reach the overhead point or practically the exact center of the sky as viewed by earth-dwellers in this lati tude. , This giant sun, the Alpha or brightest star in the constella tion Lyra the Harp, is easy to find and forms the highest point in a star picture called the Sum mer Triangle. Many star gazers are familiar with the asterism called the Win ter Triangle, composed of three first magnitude stars; Betelgeuse in Orion, Procyon in Canis Min or, and Sirius in Canis Major. However, it seems that the Sum mer Triangle is not quite so well known. First Magnitude The Summer Triangle also contains three stars of the first magnitude: Vega in Lyra the Harp, Deneb in Cygnus the Swan which is often called the Mrs. Purdom Pansl To Sue Magazine Hollywood OPi Mrs. Tita Purdom, former wife of actor Edmund Purdom, was expected to file a $3 million libel suit today in Superior Court against Confidential magazine,, her at torney reported. The attorney, Mervin Mitch elson, said the suit involved statements made in an article titled "What Edmund Purdom Didn't Tell," in a 1956 issue of Confidential. He said Confiden tial's sister publication, Whisper magazine, and Hollywood Re search Inc., also would be nam ed as defendants in the suit. Mrs. Purdom was among a parade of Hollywood personal ities supoenaed to testify at the criminal libel trial of Confi dential and Fred and Marjorie Meade, who the state claims op erated the magazine's West Coast gossip-gathering bureau, Hoilywood Research. Fisherman Ties in TV Quiz Show New York (IP) - Norwegian-born fisherman Andrew Nass tied with Samuel Perla, Buffalo, N.Y., for S8.000 Sun day night on the CBS television quiz show, "S64,000 Challenge." The tie came when the two men correctly answered a series of questions on the Roman Em pire. Nass is now a resident of Camden, N. J. In another contest, actor Hans Conreid tied for S4.000 in the "English language category" with Tom Kane, the Buffalo, N.Y., cab driver who retired after winning $96,000 on quiz shows. The Nass-Perla match will be resumed next Sunday night at the $16,000 level, and Kane and Conreid will meet the same night for $8,000. Postal :Do-iN Yourself Booklet Distributed Washington (W Postmas ter General Arthur E. Summer field today introduced a new do-it-yourself system to cut down on long waiting lines in front of parcel post windows. The nation's larger post offic es started distributing booklets telling at a glance the mailing costs in ounces of packages sent anywhere in the United States or its territories. The postal chief said that the new booklets will simplify the present "complex" formula for postage charges based on the iortnern uross, ana Altair in Aquila the Eagle. Both triangles are asterisms or star figures composed of one star from each of three different constellations. The middle of August when Vega pin-points the zenith of the starry dome is an excellent time to learn the location of the Sum mer Triangle. Lower in the sky than Vega, but still high in the .southeast, Altair, another point in the Sum mer Triangle, shines on the east ern edge of the Milky Way. Al tair, guarded on each side by a dim star is also easy to find. It is the Alpha or brightest star in Aqufla the Eagle. The Milky Way runs between Vega and Al tair. Third Point of Asterism Deneb, brightest star in the constellation Cygnus the Swan, lying to the left or east of Vega and Altair, almost in the center of the Milky Way, forms the Milky Way, forms the third point of the asterism. This star also represents the tail of the Swan and the head of the North ern Cross as Cygnus is often called. Although all three of the giant suns forming the Summer Tri angle are considered to be of first ' magnitude, Vega ' is the brightest with a magnitude of 0.14; Altar with a brightness of 0.89 rar.ks second; and Deneb whose magnitude is 1.33 is at the bottom of the list. The smaller the number, the brighter the star, when expressing star mag nitudes. These stars are also navigational stars. The Winter Triangle, having three sides of practically the same length is called an equila teral triangle, but the Summer Triangle having only two sides of the same approximate length resembles an isosceles triangle. A line drawn from Vega to Al tair would appear to be about the same length as a line ex tended from Altair to Deneb. However, a line from Deneb to Vega would be shorter than the two lines just mentioned. Large Sky Figure The Summer Triangle is a large sky figure, the longer sides being about 30 degrees in length or six times the distance be tween the Pointers in the Big Dipper. East of Altair and south De neb,. but lower in the sky than either of these, lies a small dia mond of tiny, twinkling stars somewhat resembling a distant electric sign. This is Delphinus the Dolphin, also known as Job's Coffin, one of the few constel lations named for a Biblical character. Hebrew shepherds, during their night watches on the hills of Palestine saw in this boxlike group of stars the coffin of the faithful Job, who according to legend was buried halfway be tween heaven and earth. Tuna Industry Agrees To Cease Price Fixing Washington (in The Ameri can West Coast tuna fish indus try has agreed to halt allegedly illegal price-fixing and stop try ing to squeeze out Japanese competition, the Federal Trade commission has announced. The commission indicated that compliance with its order may lower the price of canned tuna. It said virtually the entire West Coast industry, producing over half the nation's packed tuna, consented to the order. Khrushchev Seeks To Coordinate Eastern Economy Berlin W Nikita Krush chev has used his East German trip to try to corrindate the economy of the Eastern bloc to try to raise the "standard of living as an example to the non Communist countries. Throughout his tour he has taken steps to back up his doc trine that Communism is more appealing when there is "butter on the bread." And he has de manded that the Communist bloc surpass Western industrial production. Sensible Distribution To achieve this goal, he said, the economic systems of the East bloc must be based on a "sensible distribution of work, cooperation of economic plans." He told East German leaders they must raise their production so that it will be an example to anti-Communist West Germans of the advantages of Commu nism. To do this he promised East bloc aid a promise, in ef fect, that the Soviets no longer will loot the East German econ omy as they did in the Stalin era. He boasted that the Soviet Union's production now ranked second in the world, only behind the United States. And he said the Soviet Union not only must climb to first place but the Soviet bloc as a whole must out produce the West as a whole. U.S. Said To Face 'National Suicide Milwaukee. Wis. Wl The head of the Continental Air De fense Command said the U.S risks "national suicide" when it does not show sufficient strength to deter Soviet atomic aggression. "As long as the affairs of one of the world's great powers are guided by Communist masters in the Kremlin," Mai. Gen. Mar shall S. Carter said, "we are go ing to have to maintain a posture of strength to deter aggression xne alternative is . . . na tional suicide . . . extension," he said. The CADC chief of staff spoke Sunday at a V-J Day cele- oration in the county stadium nere. Leopold's Petifon Has New Evidence Chicago m Nathan Leo pold, a partner in the "crime of the century" slaying of Bobby Frank in 1924, today pinned his hopes for freedom on a parole petition said to contain 16 new items of evidence. Elmer Gertz, Leopold's at torney, said that the plump, greying 52-year-old convict sub mitted a petition for rehearing to the Illinois Parole and Pardon representative at Stateville peni tentiary Friday. Gertz said one of the phases of the crime that should be re examined was the precise nature of the roles played by Leopold and his partner, Richard Loeb, who died in a prison fight in 1936.,. Leopold has said in previous applications for freedom that Loeb was the leader in the crime. The new petition said that- the trial judge, John H. Caverly, expressed the same view in a conversation with a Roman Catholic nun. Burns Man Drowns in Water-Filled Gravel Pit Burns, Ore. 1P) Cyrus Pratt, 61, Burns, drowned Sunday in a water-filled gravel pit when a boat overturned. Pratt, his son and two other men were testing the boat when it capsized. Pratt called for help and they managed to get him ashore but artificial respiration failed to revive him.
