Well, sir it is said that on Rapa Island which is in the South Pa cific area there are six women to every man' and that the sur plus of females are very beauti ful and very lonely. So goes a passage in that appeal ing ballad. "Home On The Range." I don't care about seeing buffalos roam and can do with out viewing deer and antelope at play. I don't even mind if the skies are cloudy all day if it doesn't rain too much and bring about a muddy track. But, boy, I certainly would like for a brief period to live where never is heard a discouraging word. I have never known a period when so many people were so depressed, discouraged and blue. And in most cases I just can't figure why. o Horses and Women The saleswomen in Manhat tan's exclusive dress and spec alty shops usually work on a 20 per cent commission. So tefl your wife to be tolerant as to their eagerness to make a sale. You might even go along with her and protect her when she is planning an important purchase. However, you would have to be careful. Some of those sales women, especially the brown eyed, honey blondes, employ their wiles to influence an ac companying husband. If you do go with your wife when she buys a dress, perhaps you should wear blinkers so you can just see the dress and not the sales woman. Asides The Union Oyster House, 41 Union .st., Boston, Mass., has been at the same address for 131 years . . . That Patterson-Jackson bout was certainly a dull affair. What division has pro duced the most interesting bouts? I think the lightweight. Maybe the middleweight. Cer tainly not the heavyweights. Lovers A highly provocative article written by a feminine essayist not so long ago was titled "Lat ins Are Lousy Lovers." Now a British female has written an article titled "Englishmen Are Lousy Lovers." She claims Lat ins are accomplished lovers. Whether or not a man is a "lousy lover" often depends on the quality of the inspiration he gets from his feminine companion. Rogue River Man Released by Police Jack Jerry Ansures, 23, of route 1, Regue RiveT, was releas ed on $10 bail about 1 a.m. Sat urday following his arrest by city police on a charge of failing to leave information at the scene of an accident. Ansures car allegedly side- swiped a parked pickup truck registered to Walter A. and Kathleen Johnson, 713 North Riverside ave., police said. Greenland, the earth's largest island, contains 827,300 square miles. SHADY COVE Missionary Council Formed By EVALYN P. WATSON Shady Cove-Trail A woman's Missionary Council has been org anized by ladies of the Assembly of God Church in Shady Cove. Officers elected are president, Mrs. Charles McClintic; vice president, Mrs. James Tillford, secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Delhert Spain. Meetings will be held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month and all ladies of the community who would be inter ested in this work are invited to attend. Lee Shelton, son of Mrs. Peter Vachon of Shady Cove, has had the cast removed from his arm which was broken in an accident while he was working at the Gus Olsen ranch. Lee says his arm is feeling fine now. Mrs. Emil Harr of Waldport, Ore., spent several days visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Thompson of Shady Cove. The regular meeting of Our Lady of Fatima club will be held on Thursday evening, Aug. 15, at the church hall. A special meeting was held, together with a luncheon, at the home of Mrs. Ernest Segessenman. on Wednes day, Aug. 7, for the officers and committee heads of the club. Plans are being made and work done for the annual bazaar, which will be held this year at the church hall. Mrs. John Collins and chil dren, Rodney, Gloria and Debby, or independence, ore., visited with friends in Shady Cove this past week and also with her mother in Talent. Mr. and Mrs. Monte Preston of Downey, Calif., have returned home after spending part of the summer at their summer home home next to the Jim Cassals on Lewis creek, Trail. Mr. L. P. Reichmuth of Ex celsior, Minn., was a recent house guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. Myklebye of Trail. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Dristy, who were renters in the duplex own ed by Mr. Pearl Adair, have left Shady Cove and planned to go to Fall City, Ore., and on to Port land. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Abernathy 1 -1 Mrs. Eleanor Beattie of Shady Cove made a trip to Grants Pass, where she visited with Mr. and Mrs. Dave Pruess and daughter, Sheri, and to California where she was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. John Long. Mr, and Mrs. Arthur Nelson of Lake Hughes, Calif., were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kennedy and son of Ken nedy's Market, Shady Cove. Guests staying at the Rogue River lodge have been Dr. Heber Newson of Berkely, . Calif. Dr. Newson is employed in the phy sical education department at the University of California. Other guests have been Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Simonson and daughters of Santa Rosa. Simonson is employ ed by the CAA and is well known. Also here Mr. and Mrs. S. Burkel and daughter of Pan ama City, Florida, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hammel. Mrs. Lee Hinkle, of Trail, is convalescing at home following surgery at Sacred Heart hospital for removal of a tumor from her lerg. She is able to have visitors. The Hinkles are renting the Carl Dawson home next to the Rogue River lodge. Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Williams of Shady Cove, have been spend ing a great deal, of their time camping and fishing at Willow lake. The John Wilson famil-ir of Shady Cove visited them there one bunday to spend the day. During their recent vacation trip Mr. and Mrs. Athel Dudley traveled to Canada and Glacier National par They met Mrs. Dud ley's cousines, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Horner of Emmetsburg, Iowa, in Canada and spent part of their vacation with them. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Connor, of Shady Cove, have had Mo. Con nors sister, Mrs. Violet Haviland, of Medford," staying with them during her convalescense after being confined to Rogue Valley hospital. Mrs. Maude Ditsworth of Ash land, who for many years lived on Laurelhurst, road, Trail, fell and broke her hip in an accident at home the latter part of July. A dangerous situation exists near the McLeod bridge wheie fishermen park their cars on the shoulders of the highway. This lowers the visibility for drivers on the bridge end creates a haz ard for those coming onto the bridge from the north. Two signs are in plain view warning that parking is not allowed but cars are parked on the shoulders every day. McLeod residents feel that some action should be taken to correct this situation before a serious accident occurs. ufc-.-.g fmn i DAVID ESPEY - Receives Confirmation Appointment to School Confirmed David Espey, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Laurance Espey, 619 Park St., has received confirma tion of his appointment to the U. S. Merchant Marine academy at Kings Point, N. Y. Espey was nominated in May by Sen. Richard Neubesger. The youth was graduated in May from St. Mary's school here. He played football and ran track for the school, and was a mem ber of the winning 380-yard re lay team at the state "B" track tournament this year. David will leave Medford Sat urday, Aug. 17, by plane. He re ports to classes at the academy the following Monday. His appointment was confirm ed by Read Admiral Gordon Mc- Lintock, head of the school. One of five federal service academies in the United States, the Kings Point school graduates students after four years with a BS de gree. Graduates are licensed deck or engineering officers in the mer chant marine and ensigns in the Navy reserve. The academy is- a four year accredited college. David will enter as a "plebe" or fourth classman among a class of about 250. His second year, as a third classman, will be spent entirely at sea aboard a merchant marine ship. Ted Conway's sister, Mrs. Levira Canaday and his mother, Mrs. Carrie Zahn of Los Angeles have been spending the greater part of their vacation in Shady Cove and have purchased a home on the river next to the Conways. Mrs. Canaday is a teacher in the Los Angeles school system. Mrs. Canaday has had Mr. and Mrs. H. Cockley of Los Angeles and Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Mattice of Hawthorne visit ing with her while they have been vacationing here. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Nevins of Shady Cove have had Mrs. Kev in's mother, Mrs. Genevieve Nevins, of Livermore, Calif., and a cousin, Miss Dorothy Hock, also of Livermore, staying with them for a visit. Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Sage of of Grand Rapids, Mich., have been in Shady Cove for over a week visiting with Mrs. Sage's sister, .Mrs. George Pfeifer of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. John Garton of Klamath Falls visited one Sun day recently with Mrs. Nellie Chamberlain of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Summers, and children, Pamela and Patsy of Buena Park, Calif., have been house guests of Mr. and Mrs. V. F. Copeland of Trail. Mr. and Mrs. Alford Cooper of Shady Cove . have had as a house guest Miss Phoebe Moran of New York, who flew to Se attle and then drove to Shady Cove for a week's visit with the Cooper family. Other house guest at the same time were John Pollock of Red Deer, Can ada, and Dick Holton of Edmmv ton, Canada. All of the visitors were members of the World Tape Pals and became acquaint ed with the Coopers through one organization. During their 'stay the visitors were entertained with a potluck dinner. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Sam Taylor of Central Point, Mr. ancl Mrs. Riley Cook of Medford and Mr. and Mrs. Max Hawks of Shady Cove, who are also mem bers of the World Tape; Pals. Slides were shown of a trip through old Mexico potographed and narrated on tape by Mr. Tweedie of Arizona. Mrs. Clara Ducker of Port land has been visiting her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ducker, of the Cove Valley Sup ply, Shady Cove. , Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kennedy took their son, Bill, 9, and his friend, Morris Chamberlain, also 9. on a week's fishing trip to Fish lake, returning home the i first part of August. Mrs. Barbara Raymond of Buf falo, N.Y., has been spending some time visiting with her sis ter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Brewer of Trail. Other guests of the Brewers have been Mr. and Mrs. B.
