These tubes are esssential to child - bear ing bee a u s e they carry the little ovum or egg from the ovary to the womb. The fact that they are closed is made clear when in the Rubin test, gas, injected into the neck of the womb, does not flow through into the ab dominal cavity. The woman may then ask if something can be ' done to re open her tubes, and make them serviceable again. Gynecologists tell me that sometimes a slightly blocked tube can be opened up by repeated injections of gas, but this may not restore func tion sufficiently well so that the woman can conceive and have the baby she wants. Occasionally, a woman will come to ask if her tubes, once tied to avoid pregnancy, can be opened again. She has remar ried, and is now anxious to give her new husband a child. It is possible in some of these cases to restore continuity in one or both tubes, but the operation is a gamble, and no good surgeon would think of promising a good result. Some women who have lost their tubes entirely during an operation wonder if some sort of a tube might not be con structed surgically. A surgeon could doubtless make a tube, but I cannot imagine his being able to make one that would function delicately in the way a normal tube must function if a woman is to conceive.
