By CHARLES COHDDRY United Pre Correspondent Heidelberg. Germany iw One -fourth of the entire U.S. Army is deployed in Europe to day ready to meet any Com munist ground attack svith dev astating firepower. Gen. H. I. Hodes, top Army man on the continent, sayt a Russian assault can be stopped by his formidable force with the help of present and planned Al lied divisions. The aim if the struggle to prevent war fails is to hold firm at or near the Iron Curtain to give air power time to retali ate before Red land forces could overrun Western Germany, g "That is the one thing we're going to make every effort to do," Hodes says. The commander makes no at tempt to conceal the gravity of his problem. If war comes, he tells inquirers at his headquar ters here, "we would be subject ed to missile attack" and there is "no reason" to doubt the Reds could use atomic weapons. Hodes said the Russians "do not lag" in developing tactical type weapons for battlefield use. But unit-for-unit and weapon-for-weapons, the Americans can meet the Russians on at least ; equal terms, even if they are numerically inferior. Surprise Attack Unlikely It now is highly unlikely, Hodes believes, , that the Reds j could spring a surprise ground . . attack. He feels they would have to mobilize in such strength as - to alert the Allied forces on the Central European front. With warning, the general says, his forces could withstand ' a nuclear attack and strike back promptly. He keeps the com-1 mand ready to go into action "in j a matter of hours." Frequent alerts require combat units to i disperse within two hours for defense against simulated nu clear blows. It is giving away no secret to report that U.S. ground forces in Western Germany have the rocket launchers and artillery pieces to, hurl 57 atomic war heads at one time if that should be necessary. Stag shows, variety shows, a horse show, square dancing and a fat stock auction are among vents scheduled. This afternoon the Yreka trampoline team will present their art nn the miriwav staffe at 4 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. the Ethel Mars dancers will take over the stage and the 4-H style show re vue is scheduled at 7 p.m. Night entertainment will in clude the Southern Oregon Horse shows association show in the arena at 8 p.m. and a square dance at 9 p.m. Contest Judging Exhibits and contest judging concludes Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. when a 4-H horse show is scheduled in the show arena. At 9 a.m. Saturday classes in the Southern Oregon horse show are slated in the arena. Saturday entertainment also includes the Yreka Trampoline club act on the midway stage, the Ethel Mars dancers at 6:30 and presentation of 4-H awards at 7 p.m. Fat Stock Auction The 4-H and FFA fat stock auction is scheduled in the show arena at 8 p.m. The event is being sponsored by the Jose phine County Sheriffs Posse. A square dance jamboree will start at 9 p.m. Saturday. Sunday entertainment will be gin with the Yreka Tampoline act at 2 p.m. on the midway stage. Glen Trout and his Mis souri Mountain Boys with the Maddox Brothers and Country Girls will perform at a matinee at 3 p.m. The show will feature magic by Boxley and Marie, a '. roller skating duo called the I Whirlwinds, -the Helen Haag Chimps and a novelty act by the five Boginos. Hodes' forces total about 250, 000 men. They are stationed from England to the East Ger man and Czechoslovakian bord ers and in Berlin. He says 75 per cent are in combat or combat-support units. The principal fighting element of Hodes command- is Lt. Gen. Bruce C. Clarke's U.S. 7th Army. It comprises about half of total Army manpower in Eu rope and is regarded as the finest field army the country has main tained in peacetime.
